Yoga Nidra or bhajan singing is like meditation

The yogi's conscious sleep is a state of awakened rest known only to rare, accomplished beings. In this sleep, one remains inwardly aware, turning night into day. It is a sleep of alertness, not unconsciousness. This practice transcends ordinary relaxation, which is often misunderstood. Common yoga relaxation is mistakenly called the corpse pose, implying death. It should be understood as the bliss pose, representing fullness of life. The practice must be inclusive, free from sectarian symbols so all may benefit. True relaxation means being so profoundly at peace that no external disturbance, like a cobra crossing your path, can create inner agitation. The body rests, but consciousness remains luminous and awake.

"In that sleep, one remains awake and turns night into day."

"This sleep is known only to the rare, accomplished being."

Bhagavān kī jaya, śrī sattva gurudevā kī jaya, Hari Om. This is one of the bhajans in our yoga tradition, from Mahāprabhujī, Alak Purījī, Deva Purījī, and Mahāprabhujī, Mahāprabhujī, Madhavananjī. He was telling us very much. And this is what we see in this meditation. This is a bhajan, but also it is the meditation. Here, sometimes people cannot understand some words, how it is, what they are telling. So this time here, there is one mistake, and this mistake we should correct. It’s speaking clearly, definitely, but suddenly there is something, so there comes one word. And that means that it is one. This person, for example, it said, they are wrong, not good. This only one, it comes, and same word again. He’s talking, coming very right, good. Otherwise, he’s very good. And we, our, if we sit evening meditation or in the night before going to sleep, if you or we can read this, it will give us a very beautiful feeling, and very in our whole body and in our whole thinking and words. It is my... not, not... Okay, but to everybody. And in that, after you go to sleeping, so water here we are singing. Here it is a little bit long, but this is beautiful. It is very long, but if we will live like this, then we can sleep, and it will be beautiful. Very good sleeping, and it will come, very beautiful feelings. And maybe it will come in our sleeping, our name, very good about we will see about God, this and that. Or maybe there it comes that you will be very not good, what? Means this good one, good means that time then, and in the sleep we’ll create again back good from inner self, our self. As long as we are awakened, we can do good and this and that. But when we are deep sleeping, then our words, if they are very clear and everything, that will be very good in our life. You know, we have that jāgrat. It has jagrat. So we were all in jagrat, awakened. Jagṛt means awakened. You are sitting here, I can speak this, I can tell these things, my name, my this, my every, awakened. We are completely awakened. Sometimes we make a mistake also, but it doesn’t matter. And this is that awakening; we are awakened. So we can speak many things, we can work a lot, many, many great things, good things, or negative things, fighting this, that. But awaken, we are in awaken. So in awaken, when people are fighting or this, then this yogī Janakī, yogī Jan, in that. It will come, a very good, it will come spiritual again back, everything like this. But it is, we are awakened, we are very awakened. For example, we are driving our car high speed, 300, 120, or somebody till 140, so that’s not good to heart. Then, other car will come like this and stop. Please take your car because you are driving. It was 150. But when we were about here in Europe, it’s here, 30 maybe, 130. But mostly, people, they go 120. That’s good. But people like this. So it means, I’m not talking about the train and this and that. I tell you that we are awakened. We are awakened. We know everything is doing. This is that sign. So in this, we can be good to speaking to someone, good to someone, bad to someone. This is on the outside, the inside. But when we said about yogī Janakī, yogī, so here, what gave me the word "yogī"? And it said that the other one, "yogī," there is one we give, the "rogī" or "rogī." So we are telling that a person is not healthy. So first it was told that it is, I am, let us say, I am an ill man. But it is not ill. So this was one word there. You have to think very clearly. Many people will not, but we have to clear very nicely. So, yogī and the rogī: yogī is a yogī, very good yogī, and or rogī, and who is a rogī? An ill person. Many you have not, so you can listen, please, because they don’t know. So, this is that in our lecture, we should understand very clearly: rogī, no, but that time it can also be told. And rogī, we will make it rogī, or what is this rogī? So that is a different thing: rogī, not rogī, yogī. Yogī, not rogī. Yogī, not rogī. There are two words only, so somewhere I am telling you because many people, they know. We did not with us, and they like it, and they are rewarding, so we have to clear it. This is very nice because this bhajan is not only a bhajan; this is very spiritual and very good for all of us, all yogīs, yoga. So, there are two we have, that one we have, that all we see. Lie down, relax, and what? What are we saying? What? Yoga nidrā. So, yoga sādhanā. So, then we are getting some, and this, some master or guru, they have done, but they did not understand Mahāprabhujī’s, and that’s why it is not completed. So we all, we have yoga, and there is, we have yoga nidrā, yoga nidrā... So, we are in the yoga nidrā. How are we like down there? There are two first. May we go from the up to down, or the other side? So, mostly now, there are many yogīs, all yoga people, in the whole world. So they may like beginning, means from our foot, or from our head, or our fingers. But we have to go all in on it. So we said, "Okay, we make now yoga relaxation." Then we lie down, and we should. Some people cannot, they want to lie down half, or they can, otherwise not, you know that? Lie down completely down. Now, there was, long ago in Rajasthan, Jaipur, and Jaipur there was a very good yogī. Very good, and Holī Gurujī was there, Hori Gurujī’s, and they were very good friends. But when Gurujī, Hori Gurujī, was going to him, he said, "No, no,..." "I’m your disciple," he said. "I’m like this, like this." He was a very great man, a great man. And I still like him very much. And there are many people who can be the real guru, and so he had one young girl, and this young girl is spiritually very good, and so exercises and many things, and he respected her gurujī. So she is about maybe twenty or like this, and she is still from Jaipur. She is a very great... whenever I come to Jardhan from Jaipur, she comes here, and she has come two times here. I invited her here twice, many, you know, or not. So he’s Gurujī, he has... so they said, just like the whole body. So they said, "The whole lie down on the floor with hands, legs, and everything is like dead and all," they are telling. Then, may I? There, and I said, "No, not you. You are not dead, you are awakened." And so I gave them this from yoga practice, and I said, "It is a holy and relaxed and very good." And others, they said, "It is like a dead body," where I was also doing also. I was also there, relaxed with Holy Guruji’s other disciples in Jaipur. Then I came to Europe, and I was in many countries, and I was also giving lectures, like on diet. I’m giving, right? Very good. One day, about 11 o’clock in the afternoon, evening in Vienna, and it came, one professor, and the professor, he’s from Italian. And he’s at the University of Vienna. Very nice, very great, our university in Vienna. And before, the first one in your check, the first like this, was here. Well, so when I was there, there was one man, our matajī, she was taking care of me, and she was cooking and everything for me, and she died, unfortunately. So the professor came, and Matajī was there, and she said, "Hello," and this and that, and said, "I want to speak with one yogī about yoga practice, and I want, like, yoga and like this." So she said, "Okay, he’s here, and my disciple is my master, or this." But I always said, "Her Matajī, like my mother." And I have a picture on the inside there. So she went to the kitchen to make a coffee or something. And he told me how to do yoga classes and how. So I give her this class, this and that. And then I was lying down, and this yoga, yoga nidra. So she liked it very much, and it was very good. And this one book, he bought everything. I think he’s completely like this. Then after he went to the city in Vienna, in one bookstore, and he did see some books. He wants some books, and then I gave him the book there, and he said, "There is our book or the other’s book," I don’t know. My other professor was very great, but he was about 70 or nearly 80. He’s coming, something... Otherwise, definitely 58, no? He put the book and he took it home. He was in the night in the ashram, he was in the house. It was midnight, he was reading this book, and this book said to relax and lie down, it’s like a dead body. Yeah? You know that? Yeah. Śavāsana. Yeah. And morning, he liked it like this, and early morning again came. You are killing me. I said, "Why? Because you said you are yoga, but in yoga you are dying." So I told him, it is not like this. I put him another name. And so I’m telling everybody, what I told him? Ānanda. Ānanda. And she said, "Ānanda, ānanda means good, happy, joy, everything." And from that time, I wrote everything in our books everywhere: what is ānanda? Ānanda. Now, many Indians, they don’t want this. They don’t want like this because they think it’s a diet like this. This is like this, so this is one little point, and everything can go in the other direction. Then we are told, Holy Gurujī, and Holy Gurujī said, "Yes, not like this. To die or something is good like this, so that on this ātmā, ātmā." So from that, it begins from this to that. This is the number one. And number two, there is this practice. What is that? Five exercises, and these are only like that. And people didn’t want to learn something because it is a Hindu, Indian god’s Sūrya, like the sun. So the point is, people don’t want to, and they, when they put us, our... Modiji, and it is about, now about eight years, I think, or something, or 90, and there, yeah, I think it is, how many days, two times, okay. And so, there, people said, "We don’t want to have this Indian god," and so I said, "I have my different," and so I made new, and what is in new? There is no problems, no God, nothing like this, but only exercises, and very good. And so I said, "We are healthy on this." So there were Muslims, they were, they don’t like it, but then I made it like this. They like it very much, the Muslims, the Christians, and Indians, and no one else. Everyone can have an exercise like this. And that has become for everyone in this way, do you understand? Yeah. And so, our exercises then, there are three. The name of some villages somewhere, yeah? So we give again other name, yes. So, so this is one village. Mahāprabhujī’s, and there are many Muslims, they are also like this, that everybody like it, "badī khatū," so "badī" name, but it means "big one," yeah, so "badī khatū." So it is very good for us and for everybody, so one, where, how to speak, what to do. Like this, so three times was connecting better. How to use all people said, "No, no." I said, "Okay, it is yours, but this is now. We have this, and you know that we like it this very much." So, I think that I can tell you now that you are sitting. Somebody sitting like this, like this one. Should not sit here when the master, the guru, is sitting. Then you must always be sitting here, yeah? So everybody’s here, yeah? In the school, in the college, how are you sitting there, yeah? When the professor is going out, then it doesn’t matter. So that is that. Teachers, there, then the guru is also like this, yes. Therefore, now I will do something so that you will lie down, okay? My head on my side and feel very right and comfortable and everything, okay? I give you something so good that you will say, "Rain is coming." Lie down very good, and relax very good, and place your hand on your stomach. This Nado, just very relaxed. If you want to feel on your stomach, otherwise put it on the floor. Just relax, but relax means your whole body, yes, the whole body, very peaceful, very relaxed. Everything one should be also said, "Very, you should be very urgent," not an urgent, but know that everything. So it means, so it is said, someone if you are very comfortable and very good and you have no problems, and doesn’t matter what it is, I... Don’t have a problem, and I don’t take care about anything. I’m so relaxed, and then comes a big cobra. And the cobra will come, and maybe he will go over your body, and you will say nothing. He does nothing. He will go over you. That’s it, and how. Many, they will do comfortableness, and he’s going over them and others. If you just a little feel, what will be said? Cobra, so is the same thing. Now you are here, be relaxed, comfortable, don’t worry anything, all peaceful. You are very peaceful. Relax, relax. And what does "very relaxed" mean for you? Our breath, we are so relaxed, and our breath is very peaceful and comfortable. Roll your body left or right side, as you like. Very relaxed, very good. See everything: your body, how you like your lungs, arms. Stand up, sit down, please. Not step up. Always, yes. And if you want to look to my side, okay, or you like the other side, no problem. That’s very good. Yes, nine times, and then again relax. Again, nine times again, so we... We will do five times, four times, so we see very comfortable, very relaxed. And we have done before Bṛṃmarī, and in there, you know, already close your eyes, relaxed. It’s very nice, but our hands should be like this. After nine minutes, hand down. For a while, feel relaxed in your hands, but eyes closed. Again, Brahmārī.
