Yogī Janokhī Yoga Nidrā: A Guru Pūrṇimā Discourse

Yoga Nidrā, the conscious sleep, is realized through satsaṅg. On Guru Pūrṇimā, satsaṅg is received. Satsaṅg means company of truth. Truth is what exists in past, present, and future. That truth is God alone. The guru reveals the way to truth. Through satsaṅg, life progresses, bringing love, devotion, and detachment. An insect in a flower is carried to the saint via a garland. Likewise, the seeker reaches God through the guru’s grace. Many from distant lands follow this path. Their devotion is deep, their service humble. They realize non-violence, abstaining from meat. The rare saint knows Yoga Nidrā: awake within sleep. In that sleep, consciousness perceives the inner light. Ordinary sleep is unconscious. The yogi’s sleep is alert awareness. This is the teaching of the saints.

"Sat means truth. What is the truth that stays in the future, in the past, and in the present? That truth is only God."

"Through that mala, the germ comes to the holy saint. Just like that, the holy saints, the beloved Gurudev, bring us to God."

This most sacred Vyāsa Pūrṇimā, the festival of Guru Pūrṇimā, is a great occasion. On this most auspicious day, in this most holy place of the sacred land of Bhārat, which is a center of spirituality, we sit at the feet of one who is worthy of morning remembrance, worship, and praise – Śrotriya, Brahmaniṣṭha, Anantaśrīla, Samalaṅkṛta, supremely venerable Paramyogīrāj, Paramahaṁsa, Svāmī Śrī Maheśvarānanda Purījī, Gurudev Bhagavān – and by his divine resolve, on this holy day, we are all experiencing bliss. First, on this dais are seated all my gurubhāīs, all the saints who have come from other places, the Brāhmaṇ vṛnda, the Saṅkīrtan Maṇḍalī, and all those who have come from foreign lands. In the Śrīmad Bhāgavatam Mahāpurāṇa it is said: "Bhāgyo Dāyena Bahujanma Samārjitena, Bhāgyo Dāyena Bahujanma Samārjitena." Satsaṅgamām Chalabhate Puruṣo Yādvai Ajñāna Hetu Kṛta Moham Adaṇḍha Kāraṇaśam Vidyātado Dayate Vivekaḥ. That means: when, through ages upon ages, through birth after birth, through kalpas and antarālas, the fruit of that being’s, that jīva’s, karmas ripens and accumulates, then, coming to such an extremely sacred place and in this way attaining the direct Śiva-svarūpa Sadgurudeva Bhagavān, and sitting in this sacred place on this sacred day, we all receive that great satsaṅg. What is satsaṅg? There are two types of saṅg: satsaṅg and kusaṅg. What is sat? What is sattya? Sattya is sat. And what is sattya? The one who is learned in all three eras—past, present, and future—the one who has that power, that is the truth. And just as the power of Parabrahma Paramātmā exists, so Parabrahma Paramātmā is the truth. But who is the one who tells that truth? Who is the one who shows the path to that Parabrahman Paramātmā? The one who shows us the path of truth is Śrotri Brahmaniṣṭha Śrī Sadgurudev Bhagavān. So we are all deriving the benefit of this satsaṅg, because saṁsarga jāhi doṣa guṇa bhavanti – only through company are faults and virtues acquired. You must have heard this story. Kito Pi Sumana Sangat, Aarohati Satam Sirah, Asma Pi Yati Devatpam, Mahad Bhi Supratishthita. There is an insect in a garden, sitting on the flowers. The gardener comes, chooses the beautiful flowers, and brings them to make a garland. Mahāprabhujī kī Karatā Mahāprabhujī kī Karatā... In the same way, through that garland, the insect reaches the holy saint. So can we reach that Parabrahman Paramātmā. This satsaṅg makes life progress; it enables us to attain Bhagavān Paramātmā, love, devotion, and vairāgya. That is why satsaṅg must be embraced in our life. This is the great glory of satsaṅg. Now, Gurudev Bhagavān has ordered us to say something in English as well. I don’t have much practice, but as per Gurudev Bhagavān’s instruction, and by his grace, whatever is inspired from within, I will offer those words at the feet of Gurudev Bhagavān. Hari Om everyone, dear sisters and brothers. Today we are celebrating a special day, Guru Pūrṇimā. I would like to wish everyone a happy Guru Pūrṇimā. On Guru Pūrṇimā, we are celebrating here at the holy place, the spiritual center of Yoga in Daily Life, Om Āśram Jādan Pālī. You are all very lucky, because in this entire world there are many creatures, but you are sitting under the holy blessing of Gurudev. We are having a satsaṅg. What does satsaṅg mean? Sat means truth. So, which truth? What is the truth that stays in the future, in the past, and in the present? That truth is only God. But who will tell you that truth, and who will bring you to that truth? There is only one way: Sadgurudev Bhagavān will give us the blessing, the knowledge, the way, and the method to travel that path, and we will reach that truth. There are two kinds of saṅgha: satsaṅga and kusaṅga. There is a little germ that lives in the flowers. A gardener goes to the garden, picks a flower, and makes a mālā. On the special day of Guru Pūrṇimā, he offers that mālā to Gurudev Bhagavān. Through that mālā, the germ comes to the holy saint. Just like that, the holy saints, the beloved Gurudev, bring us to God, just like the germs. So, I would like to again wish you a happy Guru Pūrṇimā, have a blessed day, do your mantra, jap, and be happy in your life. Sadgurudev Bhagavān Kī Jai. I would also like to say that we, from all over Bhārat, India, and from other countries—Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, the Americas, and Europe—many of these are our bhaktas. All our brothers and sisters have been with us for a long time. I remember when I went to other countries, I had almost nothing, just a little. But from that time, I saw all these people. I tell our Indians: at that time, in every country—Austria, London, Hindu countries, France, New Zealand—everywhere people would say, "Hey, don’t you eat meat? If you don't eat meat, you will die." I said, I will never die. They said, "You have lost a lot of weight." I replied, it is my Gurujī’s power. Even parents would tell me, "Kill him or make him eat meat." I said, it won’t happen. In all those countries, people believed that without meat you would die. I would point to Gandhījī: he was strong, and I am also strong. While I was there, some were good, some were not. But gradually people realized that animals should not be killed, meat should not be eaten, and slowly, though at first there were only ten people, five left, two came in between, now in many countries – not just one place, but all over the world – there are many. How many times have I traveled to this Earth? Fifty-two hours of travel. Now look at yourself: you don’t touch the earth, the Madhira, and these are so big. When I was there, people and their parents said, "Don’t go to this Indian. He will die; he is very thin." I said, don’t worry, he is thin, but he will grow up too. And many, many songs, many things are hitting. Many are sitting here with their children; there are five families. He is their mother, their daughter, their son, and all five are my disciples. So much is in Europe, New Zealand, Fiji, Canada, America, and other centers. They are all my devotees, disciples, brothers, you could say, and they are very spiritual and great. Some are sannyāsīs, though not proper sannyāsīs – they go with money and things to different countries, but they are not like this. They don’t eat anything from their gurujīs or in the āśrams. My disciples, oh, I am very strict, but only for two minutes! I take them as my little child, sister, or mother – everything. They are all great, very nice. Everybody sees them. Yesterday I came from Europe and Delhi, and today again I’m here. For a few years, I told people, "Don’t always come here. Practice there, and if you can come, come." These people are so great: humble, respectful, everything. They are not just like little children. Many of them are very great persons. Yes, there is one called nursing. Can you stand up, the nursing? He has done so much, great work, and yet he is not at all arrogant or proud. And your wife, she is also very good. It was a marriage made in heaven. You cannot believe how much he has in his country. I go there, and even the dogs are good – good dogs. The boss comes; now they got a black German dog, still not one year old but already big, and two people are holding him. Then his daughter, his wife said... I cannot, so I said, "Don’t worry, we will give it some other day." They would come to me, and when I told them who had come, "I need a job," they would leave their work and come here. That is one thing, and then I tell them it is okay, I will get the job again. So this is how much devotion these people have. About devotion, Mahārāj Jī was telling you, right? Raju, how good Sanskrit he was speaking, and Avatārpūrījī also believes, Pūrījī, Pūrījī... They are so great. Sometimes I think, my God, they are great people, like very high beings, maybe God, maybe not. Sometimes my disciples are so great, and I am just okay. Then why should I speak so much? I thought about the coffees, I am waiting for my coffees. So, it’s all, and this, all, they are from different countries, many, many other countries, not just this one or that one. Śrī Śrī... She came from Australia, and we are to come now to Europe. We will all come. Go, go, go. I don’t tell anyone. That’s it. So, I tell them, as long as you come here to our ashram and do seva, Śiva is the supreme God. When you work, everything is respected in all bodies, and that gives this and that. That is why they are very good. Everybody is coming, and so thank you very much. This is about this. In my state, in our village, people did not get eggs. In the shops, they used to keep eggs on one side. And now that I am coming out, people write in their newspapers, "Hey brother, eat this egg, or else your children will get spoiled." So now what has happened? You eat eggs, but how many diseases do you have, which are considered to be cancer? How much cancer is coming? I have not seen anyone. Purījī, Purījī... He was sent back from here to Kuñchekeya. He koi akhāṛā hai, wo to wa chori hai, ya choro bhole koi ho to majha kare to khāwe de, koi nī. (If there is an akhāṛā, that is a trick; if there is anyone, let them enjoy, they will feed.) I have so many disciples that for me, I would say, the gods of the God, upper all, not all in heaven. Humāre disciples ke heaven to Purījī, Purījī... He stayed for a month, just one month. I told him, "If you come here, I will give you 10,000 rupees, or half." And when I came, he loved me so much and did very well. So many people came and worshipped him. I said, "I will give..." You give this much so the matter gets resolved, so I said, "I don’t give money." Mahāprabhujī said, "Mahāprabhujī gives." So I asked him to give me the money for the Mahāvījas and so on, and after that, for 10–15 months, no, how much did he give me? Just this much. He just said, "Mahārāj said, 'Mahārāj, you do it.'" I said, "Okay." I gave it to him, to my brother. All this was given to me in a good manner. How much? Maybe one or two thousand rupees. But when they came, I told them to take this. I told them it is not like that. Mahāprabhujī kī Karatā Mahāprabhujī kī Karatā... Mahārāj Jī Thevukai, Sabindra Swāmījī, he is of Jainism, but we are like this, we are very good, his mother, his father, children and all, so we need such a person. The other one told someone that after taking him for two days and giving him once, he should go at night. He Kevalam He Kevalam... He Kevalam Prem Kī Vādā Kyā Hai, Bhajan Hai Na, Bhajan Prem Kā Pyālā Parī Kabhā Merā Bharā Se
