The Divine Flame: Śiva Jyoti and the Path of Self-Realization

The beginning of yoga is Śiva, the self-manifested cosmic consciousness and light of life. This Śiva Jyoti is the universal light appearing through its own will. It manifests through the five living elements: space, fire, water, air, and earth. The individual soul is a spark of that cosmic Self. Through spiritual practice, the soul shines and moves toward self-realization. This requires a sattvic diet and lifestyle to cultivate the inner vital energy, ojas. True nourishment also comes from spiritual company, satsaṅg. The ultimate aim is the soul's union with the Śiva Jyoti. This final liberation depends utterly on the grace of the Guru.

"The ultimate truth is only one, that is Śiva, Swayambhū, Śiva Jyoti—not this material body, but the light through which the entire universe is illuminated."

"Self-Realization cannot take place without Gurudeva... the liberation, final union with the cosmic Self or with that Śiva Jyoti, is only when the Guru Kṛpā is there."

Dear brothers and sisters, once more, welcome. I am very happy to see you. It is a divine blessing to be together here in the forest. We will celebrate a divine event continuously for three weeks, and I welcome all of you with a message according to yoga, Hindu belief, spirituality, the incarnations, and the cosmic consciousness—the cosmic will. The beginning of yoga was with Lord Śiva. Shiva is known as Swayambhū. Swayambhu means that which is not born through mother or father or by nature. It is one who manifested himself with the thought, "ko’ham bahusyāmi"—"I am one, and now I will multiply myself." That Shiva means cosmic consciousness. Shiva means purity, liberation, salvation, and Jīvan Jyoti—the flame of life, the light of life. So Shiva is that Śiva Jyoti. That Śiva Jyoti is the universal light appearing through its own will in the very beginning of the yugas and every sata yuga. Through that Śiva Jyoti, the Lord Śiva is manifesting himself in the five elements. Our planet, which we know as a living planet, is living. Mother Earth is living, not dead material. All the trees, vegetation, every atom has the light that is called Śiva Jyoti, and all this represents the five elements: Tattva, Agni, Vāyu, Jal, Pṛthvī, and Ākāśa Tattva. Ākāśa Tattva is the space, this emptiness. Agni Tattva is the fire. Agni has thousands of different meanings; Agni is the Śiva Jyoti. Then comes the Jal Tattva, Appa, or called the Soma. That Soma is known as the seed, the mother, the universal mother. The fire is the seed known as the universal father. When this Agni enters into the Soma, then the process begins—the process of life, air, earth. So Ākāśa (space), Agni (fire), Ap (water), Vāyu (air), and Pṛthvī (earth)—all these five elements are life on this planet. All are living here. The creation, the manifestation, begins and has its representation because it comes out of these five elements. Jeevan, Jeeva, Jyoti. Jeeva is the soul, Jeevan is the life, and Jyoti is the flame, the light, the Self, Ātmā, the Śiva, the consciousness, the oneness: Satyam, Śivam, Sundaram. Satyam is the truth, the ultimate truth. The ultimate truth is only one, that is Śiva, Swayambhū, Śiva Jyoti—not this material body, but the light through which the entire universe is illuminated. The Vedas speak of "ananta brahmāṇḍa, śāstra sūryas"—endless universes and thousands upon thousands of sun systems. The stars, the planets, all that we see sparkling at midnight—what is that? That is called the Śiva Jyoti. That is the Śiva consciousness. That light is illuminating, sparkling, shining, brilliant; that is called Śiva. That is the embodiment of Śiva. When a person begins to practice mantras, yoga, daily life kriyās, and prayers, then this jīva, the individual soul, which gets salvation from the karmas, begins to develop or shine spiritually. That is known as a self-realized soul, a spiritual luminary. And that spiritual luminary, that light, is the Śiva Cetanā. So Satyam, the ultimate truth, can only be one. And that truth is the evidence that we call Śiva. Evidence will never die; evidence will remain as evidence. So Shiva consciousness, the truth, will be forever. It was, it is, and it will be. We are a part of that luminary spark of that cosmic Self. Therefore, the jīva, the soul, has to convert, to change into Śiva, because the very core point, the main seed in the jīva, is called ātmā. And that ātmā is Śiva ātmā; that is a jyoti, jīvan jyoti. This jīvan jyoti, the flame, is burning as life. So this body is like a wick, and prāṇa is like a fuel, or like oil or ghee. This light will burn as long as you have this prāṇa. Ojas is the real energy of your body, and that ojas is part of the soma. While practicing yoga, and especially for all devotees of yoga and daily life, following strictly a balanced sattvic diet is essential. The balanced sattvic diet has a higher quality in it that will convert into ojas, tejas, prakāśa. "Prakāśa puñja amṛta ke śagara, Śrī Dīpāharī Mahādhānī"—my or our beloved Gurudev, Śrī Svāmī Madhavānandajī, whom we know as Holy Gurujī, is describing his realization. Realization will come through Gurudev. Mahāprabhujī himself said in one bhajan: "Gurudeva bina arjanaya, Koti upaya kare koi, chahe koti upaya kare, nabhava sendhati re." Arj means something we have to do, something that has to be done. And that is self-realization. After this, all parapherṇā of the saṃsāra—family, attachment, husband, wife, children, money, job—this is called parapherṇā, struggling. But the real cause of this life, kāraṇa—kāraṇa means the cause—is to get self-realization. And that Self-Realization cannot take place without Gurudeva. "Gurudeva-bīna-karajana-yāsare." Sare means cannot be successful, cannot be done, cannot be realized. Because when Self-Realization comes, then comes mokṣa. And again, it is said the liberation, final union with the cosmic Self or with that Śiva Jyoti, is only when the Guru Kṛpā is there. So, "Mokṣa Mūlam Guru Kṛpā." Thousands of different techniques you can do, but you cannot cross this ocean of the māyā. Always you will fall into the māyā. It is said even Brahmā, Viṣṇu, and Śiva are titled by māyā. Though they are creators of the māyā, they have to follow this. So ultimately, the aim, mokṣa, is taking place when the jīva is transmitting its form into the Śiva Jyoti, Jīvan Jyoti into the Śiva Jyoti. So, all this is that light. Our body is that wick, and that fuel is our prāṇa or our ojas. This prāṇa, this ojas, you can gain through sāttvic, balanced nourishment—liquid, solid, both kinds of nourishment. In yoga we say there are many different kinds of nourishment. It’s called saṅgha. The society with whom you spend your time is a nourishment for you. The person who is spiritual, or every day you used to go to the satsaṅg, and one day you invite and take that person with you... That person never ate meat, never drank alcohol, never used tobacco or any narcotics, and you said, "Friend, I invite you, come with me," to the night club now. How will that person feel there? You will be happy because you go every day to that club, with a lot of confusing light—you know, red. And sometimes I see the television news, you know? I was not still there, and I hope I will never go. But you know, the red and blue and this and alcohol, completely confused. You know what means confused? The bulb is burning, and you give it more power than its capacity. The bulb’s capacity is 100 volts, and you give 500 volts inside. What will happen? The bulb will fuse. It will burn out. So that will be a fuse. Con means the consciousness. Yes. Not true? And fuse. There is a fuse. Everything is destroyed. Energy is destroyed. Therefore, society is a nourishment. Thinking is a nourishment. Not thinking is a nourishment. Speaking is a nourishment, and not speaking is a nourishment. The environment is a nourishment. Like, you are born in a certain place, and now you are homesick. What does homesickness mean? You are hungry for that nourishment, to be at a place where you are at our feed at home—home sweet home. It is told that in the First World War and Second World War, many thousands of soldiers were lost in the forest. Your country’s hot climate, European climate—this time is a lot of snow and the Christmas name. The soldier’s shoes are not proper, put the newspaper and plastic over. Dress is also not proper, put the newspapers inside to protect from heat. Hungry, thirsty, and wounded, a soldier lies under a tree in the snow, with two meters of snow there. And what does that young man, the soldier, have? One wish and one thought: only to be at home. And he is saying, "Where is my home?" There is a song, I think from Czechoslovakia or somewhere: "Gde domo moi?" Where is my house? Similarly, this soul, Śiva Jyoti, would like to become one with Śiva. Night and day, night and day, I look for thee. O my Lord, wilt thou come, wilt thou come? Door of my heart, wide open for thee. That’s it. So this jīva is longing for union: mother, father, children, we had in every life—boyfriend, girlfriend, no friend, old friend—all every life. But this chance, what this jīva got, is a human body. Therefore, Holī Gurujī said, "Human life is a precious diamond. You will not get it again and again." So nourishment, balanced, sattvic, harmonized nourishment is called satsaṅg. It means to be with good friends. All friends are good; no friend is not good. But those kinds of friends who can lead you, inspire you, and motivate you for divine realization. In Hindi language we say friendship, dosti, and dosti means: do means two, and sattva means the truth. One himself or herself is walking on the path of the truth and takes the other friend or the partner also to the path of the truth. But finally, the door is the shelter at Gurudeva. Satyam Śivam and Sundaram. There is no beauty; nothing can be compared with the beauty of the Śiva consciousness, the universe. And this planet, these trees, this desert, these rivers, lakes, oceans, and mountains are a reflection of Śiva’s beauty. Oh God beautiful, oh God beautiful, oh God beautiful. In the mountains, in the forest, in the meadows and in the desert, in the rivers and lakes and in the ocean, in the animals and birds and humans, oh God, beautiful. You are the beautiful, my Lord. There is no beauty that can be like that. And that beauty is your Ātmā. You have that beauty within you. And when you realize that beauty, then your love cannot go anywhere confusing. Then, you know, you get millions of volts of strength in you. So you are not confused; no one can take you in the wrong direction—no temptations, no karma, no māyā, and so on. So the Śiva Jyoti, Jīvan Jyoti—God is our life, the flame of our life. That flame of life is in our heart, and that should be our aim. That we are together here in this seminar, in this retreat, and we will have everyday questions, answers, and lectures like this. The universe is endless, and within this universe there is a mystery—an indescribable mystery. Our life is a mystery. You know how many things are within us? No human, no engineer, no scientist, no philosopher—no one can make this body. What a beautiful coordination of the organs, limbs, circulations, hearing, sound, smell—that, my God, is indescribable. This body is the temple of God. This body is the temple of God. Do not impure this body. The temple of God. Realize that God is within you. And also Lakṣmī, the beauty, the faithful one, the bhakti, the love, that is within you. That’s called your devotion. So this is a temple of that merciful one, and that compassion is in your temple of this body. Feel it, develop it. It is said: as long as I did not know, I was searching or not searching, I did many, many things. But now I realize what my aim is, and I know what my aim is. Holy Gurujī said, "This head and the heart will surrender only at one place, and that is Mahāprabhujī’s holy lotus feet, nowhere else." So when once you have surrendered your heart, you cannot separate, and it is inseparable; it is a cosmic union, the unity that will come through your yoga practice. Now, the rain began. Australia needs a lot of water, but India does too. You are waiting for your dinner. You had... okay, otherwise, because we don’t have a dining hall. You know, yoga began with Śiva, what I want to tell you, and then it was researched by the ṛṣis in the forest. For a swāmī, for a sanyāsī, for a yogī, for a brahmacārī, the sky is a roof, the earth is a bed, and birds, animals, and trees are the family and friends. Sometimes it may be from only prāṇa, vāyu, and so many different things. But the Australian, Ugandan life tries very hard to make it comfortable for you. And that time is not anymore here, that we just live in the forest without anything, only like kangaroos, because we are used to now. So it’s very easy. Our body will feel disbalanced, but still we can’t offer you that comfort which you may have at home. But this here is a comfort of the spirituality, the love, the light, the wisdom. So Holy Gurujī said, "Prakāś puñj amṛt ke śagar, Śrī Dīpa Harī Mahādānīye." Prakāś puñj, the source of the light. Amṛt ke śagar, the ocean of the nectar. Shri Deepā Hari Mahādānīye—Mahāprabhujī is the greatest one, the greatest giver. Such a consciousness and such feelings, if you have towards your Gurudev, then you are already there. The body is here, but everything is there. "Saraṇa parāyaṇ ho jāve to nirbandhan hoī visre." Completely surrender, and you are a liberated one. So, balanced nourishment, ojasakti, tejas, memory—that is all. We need ojasakti. That was the main point in yoga, the word we call brahmacarya or celibacy. Because that is the point from where your ojaḥśakti is improving. This is... there is a, maybe there is little, but it has immense light. So on your face, as yoga practitioners following the disciplines of a balanced life, you have tejas in your body, the ojas, prakāśa. And I think by the end of the seminar, you will be more shining. Yes, that we don’t need this light. It will be so nice, shining. I tell you that even I will put this dress away and say, "Where is the cooler?" That’s it. That is Agni, which will awake the heat within you and outside you, but think cool. Okay, and then you will be more comfortable. So we will continue this subject for the last coming three weeks. I am very happy to be with you here and wish you a very pleasant stay. If there’s anything, please don’t hesitate to tell or ask the organizers; they are always here to make your stay here as comfortable as possible, and that you have everything. Feel... Divine home, this is your real home. This is the house of the Gurudeva. This is the house of the whole universe. All are welcome. Deep Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān kī jay. Mahādeva kī jay. Śrī Mādhava Kṛṣṇa Bhagavān kī jay. Satya Sanātana Dharma kī jay. Oṃ śānti. Shānti, śānti, bhāva to.
