Om is Divine

Aum is the origin and substance of all creation. It is the formless, eternal source, the first vibration from which everything arises. The three qualities of nature emerge from Aum to manifest the universe. All beings live within Aum, and all knowledge, scriptures, and mantras flow from it. Repeating and meditating upon Aum awakens divine light, purifies karma, and overcomes worldly fear and sorrow. The wise hold Aum in their heart, for it is the means to cross the ocean of worldly existence.

"Oṃ kar parabrahma rūpahe."

"Oṃ se bhavabhaya harachanasaro."

Filming location: Strilky, Czech Republic

Dhūp hai, ghar nabha rūp satahī hai, nirādhār kī rachanā śarīr, jhānī jhānī bheda suhī, jhānī jhānī bheda suhī. Oṃkāra kī triguṇā māyā, is māyā se jagat rachāyā. Oṃkāra me jīva rahe, sāp dīh ḍāre re. Oṃ kī rachanā sāre re. Oṃ khar mein jīva rahe sattva tih dhārī re, khi rachanā śarīr, rachanā śarīr sohe chahe sukhyārī. Vidyā sarva oṃ se āī, khar se vīr rachai. Sarva mantra kamunā oṃ se pram vichārī re. Oṃ kar rato milisara, oṃ kar si hotā ujjāḷā. Dhāro oṃ kā dhyāna, oṃ se bhavabhaya harachanasaro. Ṛṣi muni yogīsāra, oṃ kar ko hṛdaya dhāra. Oṃ kar ke bina, śaraṇa sapahotā phikarī re janā. Oṃ se hotā janā, Govinda se hotā ānanda. Oṃ kar śuddhārī kaj, oṃ sī hoja bhava pārī. Oṃ namo Prabhupāda Svāmī, oṃ kāra guru dev namāmī. Kahé mādā vanand Holī Gurujī, oṃ ko vandanā hamārī. This is a bhajan from Holī Gurujī, and for him, it is quite exceptional. He was a great devotee of Mahāprabhujī, and basically all his bhajans are bhakti bhajans. But this is about Aum, and it is really like a full lecture about Aum. So everything is a creation of Aum. The saints, the wise ones, they know the secret of it. And so they are living in happiness all the time. "Oṃ kar parabrahma rūpahe." Parabrahma, the highest self, God we can say. So OM is the form of Parabrahma. "Oṃ kī chāyā nahī̃, duḥkha." So where OM is, there is the divine light; there is no shadow. It is the light. "Oṃ kar nabha rūpa." Nabha is the sky or the space, the endless space. OM has no specific form; it is like the space, like the sky. "Saddhā," that means eternal. "He nirādhārī," nirādhāra. You know the word Mūlādhāra; ādhāra is like the fundament, the base. OM is nirādhāra, without any base, without anything. What would have created the Om? Because Om itself is the origin of the creation. So now it is explained more how this creation actually takes place. "Oṃkāra kī triguṇā māyā," the three guṇas: tamas, rajas, sattva. And these are the qualities which, usually, we say Prakṛti, the Divine Mother. So, I guess for poetical reasons, Holi Guruji, instead of Prakṛti, you’re using the word Māyā. But definitely not in this aspect, as we spoke yesterday, like the dangerous aspect of the Divine Mother, no. So basically, the story, if you go a little bit back as we know it from Swāmījī, is the situation of what is called the night of Brahman. And Brahman, there is no form and nothing, and then comes the first, you can say, idea or wish or whatever. Intention of Brahman: "Eko’haṁ bahu syām." And then comes that which we could call the first thought or wish of Brahman. Svāmījī always says it: "I am one, let me become many." And the first fine, subtle, he calls it sūkṣma, vibration of this thought, you can say, is Oṁ. So that is actually the origin of the creation. And OM is, at this time, one. And now the next step is this one splits into three. And this is Śrī Guṇamayā. So the Divine Mother now comes into the play, and now the elements to develop the universe are there. So now, like from a seed, slowly, slowly the tree of this whole creation is developing. This is now the next sentence. "Is māyā se jagat rachāyā." You know, Jagat, this world, this universe. So now, out of these three guṇas, out of this Māyā, the Divine Mother, the whole universe is created. So you can say this whole universe is filled by Aum, because it is the origin of that. And therefore, Holy Guru says, "Aum khar mein jīva rahe." The jīvas, jīvātmas, we are living in Aum. Like a fish is living in the water. "Sabat deha ḍāre re," deha is a body, so all those living beings which have a body, they are living in Om. So far about the physical world. Now he says that also the mental world is actually created through Om. "Vidyā sarva oṃ se āī," vidyā, you know, this word, the knowledge, the wisdom. All the knowledge of the world is coming through Auṃ. Aum, kāśī veda rājāj, veda, the holy scriptures, or the word of God. This is also coming through Aum. "Sarva mantra kamunā oṃ se," the root of all mantras is Aum. And therefore, Swāmījī once said, the real mantra cannot be without Aum. And as far as I know, all the mantras which Swāmījī is giving are actually starting with Oṁ. "Oṃ se pram vichārī re." Every thought about God, every longing for God comes from OṂ. So far, the theory. Now he speaks about the sādhanā. "Oṃ kar rato milisara." Milisara means you all together. Therefore, you all together now. Ratana means to repeat the mantra. Repeat this mantra over and over. "Oṃ kar si hotā ujjāḷā." Ujjāḷā, this is because of the rhyme. It should be ujjāḷā, that means the light, the divine light. Om awakens in you the divine light. And here’s now a special construction in Hindi, this hotā ujjāḷā, instead of he, hotā means it’s a basic statement. Like you say, two and two is four. So this is something, a very basic, very strong statement. The repetition of OM awakens the divine light in you. "Dhāro oṃ kā dhyāna." Dhyan, you know, the meditation? Go on, keep going with the meditation on oṃ. "Oṃ se bhavabhaya harachanasaro." Bhaya means fear. Through OM, you overcome all worldly sorrows and all fears. "Ṛṣi muni yogīsāra, oṃ kar ko hṛdaya dhāra." Hṛdaya dhāra means they keep in their heart, so the ṛṣis, the munis, the yogīs, they all, they are for their love, OM. So this is like a precious jewel. "Oṃ kar ke bina," without OM, actually, maybe. To explain OM KAR, this KAR means just the letter or the mantra OM. It has no special meaning. You would say OM consists of A-kāra, U-kāra, and M-kāra. "Oṃ-kār ke bina, śaraṇa sapahotā phikarī re janā," then all your śaraṇa is useless, fruitless. And look, again he says, that is a basic statement. So he likes to say, really, that is the truth. And again comes so, "Oṃ se hotā janā, Govinda se hotā ānanda." "Janā Govinda." Jñāna means knowledge, wisdom, to know. Govinda knows Om. Govinda Kṛṣṇa means, basically, I think it’s past, pro, to, do, for every saint. Like in the refrain, it was written, "Jhānī jhānī bheda suhī," the wise ones, the saints, they know the secret. So all the saints know the secret of Oṃ. "Oṃ kar śuddhārī kaj." Kaj is another word for karma. Śuddhārī means to purify. So, Aum, you can purify your karmas. How does it work? Karma is a vibration, a low vibration. And Aum is also a vibration, a very fine, very high, a divine vibration. So if they meet, what will happen? I think it’s very clear to understand how the vibration, the divine vibration of Oṁ, can purify lower vibrations, which we have created through our selfishness and so on. "Oṃ sī hoja bhava pārī." Bhava, the world, the ocean of the world. So through the practice of Aum, you can cross this ocean of the world. "Oṃ namo Prabhupāda Svāmī," my salutation. I mean, it’s a bhajan from Holī Gurujī. So, like always, of course, he greets his master in the end. My salutation to Mahāprabhujī. "Oṃ kāra guru dev namāmī." You can be called the Om Guru. You could maybe say, for me, you are Om in person. So you could interpret it that, for me, you are the embodiment of Om. "Kahé mādā vanand Holī Gurujī, oṃ ko vandanā hamārī." Holī Gurujī says, my salutation, my greeting to all. My greetings to all.
