We seek purity

A spiritual discourse on purity and devotion in the modern age.

"Therefore, I always implore our devotees: 'Please do not be black, please do not be black.'"

"I want to be this drop. I want to drink... it desires only purity, directly from my God."

The lecturer reflects on the pervasive darkness of the Kali Yuga, observed in clothing and culture, and contrasts it with the purity found in sacred music and devotion. He shares teachings from his Gurudeva, using the metaphor of a pure drop of water (pū) to describe the soul's yearning for divine purity over worldly abundance, and calls for inner cleanliness and the declaration of the pure "I am."

Śrīdīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavānakī, Dev Purīśvara Mahādeva, Mādhavānandajī Bhagavānakī, Satya Sanātanadharma, Oṁ Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ, Śāntiḥ. There are many, many bhajans, including our own. Our Gurudeva, Mahāprabhujī, Devapurījī, Sumāprabhujī, Mādhavānandajī, has given so many bhajans and other teachings. Among them, this has come from Mādhavānandajī. I still see myself as Mādhavānandajī. I impart this into my own ears. What can I do? For I am always moving like this—going this way, also going that way, and so on. This is the state for all of us, for all of you, and you can share it with others. Many may receive something, even if they do not understand. Sometimes a person comes and goes, but the message returns to their ear. This was the great refuge, as told by Mahāprabhujī and others. This is the Kali Yuga, and Kali Yuga is very far-reaching and powerful. I observe it everywhere, in every country I visit, including among women. Though women often still wear colors of their liking, men now are all in dark colors. And the cars are black. Who is it that is adopting and holding onto this? Are they humans? Everything appears very good, yet this trend is progressing far; black is advancing. Those other beautiful colors were first presented in your class in Rūpa, within that mantra. In this, you see all the colors, and in these bhajans, there is a purity that is very clear. "Clear" here means it is very fine and beautiful. I have never seen him—the great sādhu, a truly great sādhu—wear a single black item in his attire. Therefore, I always implore our devotees: "Please do not be black, please do not be black." Yet they say, "But I am the black, I am the black." Another, however, approaches and declares, "Yes, I am that pure pū, pū, pū." You know the pū? Yes, the pū. It refers to that moment when water emerges at a specific time. It is a time that is very... here it is a little, not too hot, but also snow is very hot. In this pū, something is painful. Do I want a drop? I want to be this drop. I want to drink. When we are enduring a very difficult day, a very hard day with no water, and water somehow arrives, the pū does not wish to drink just any water. It desires only purity, directly from my God. He has given to me; he should give to me. And within that is the sound, like pū, pū. There are many such things. Water is everywhere; it is already here. But he says, "No, I will... I have an ocean here, a vast ocean." He says, "There is an ocean, but in the ocean are many, many things. I cannot go inside it." Is there water there? I do not want to drink water from there. I am pū, pū... only looking upward, standing dry without water, yet still speaking. And suddenly, a pure drop comes. That is it. Who is that? He is ascending to the gods of the gods, very high up. In this manner, we are arriving, and we must proceed like this. So this day, in today's bhajan, we are very blessed. There will be thousands of us across the whole world. Many have very beautiful bhajans here in your countries. They are very simple people; their bhajans may have few words, not very lengthy. But when they sing, everyone is filled with love for everything. Yes. That is why, in our ashrams or wherever we are, with the bhajans, be very, very pure and clean, and declare: "I am, I am." Someone knows what "I am" is. So I say, "I am," but after that comes another sound. My sound, "I am," is pure—it is purity itself. But how am I? That is revealed by looking to God in that spot. We are sleeping, we have closed eyes, and so on. When we close our eyes, peace ascends there. Where is that? Here. Where is that? Here. This is not a matter of one month or two, or this or that. It is when the end of your life comes that this peace will arrive. Yes, peace.
