Don't wait to get Mantra

The essential importance of receiving a mantra and a spiritual name.

Forgive my inability to sing; I come here to learn. I am humbled by your long histories with the Guru. In speaking with many, I find a surprising lack: some family members still believe they do not need a mantra. This understanding is essential. The mantra liberates the mind, which is why we seek peace here. Do not wait, for we do not know if we have tomorrow. The mantra signifies becoming the Guru's disciple. A spiritual name is also vital. It is given with knowledge of your future, and you must work towards embodying it. The name guides you to the ultimate Name. Both mantra and name are absolutely necessary.

"I urge those people who have no mantra: it is essential. The mantra helps us to liberate our mind."

"Gurudev will give you a name that means you have to work towards that name."

All of you must forgive me, as singing bhajans is my weakest point. I try to learn, which is why I come here—to learn bhajans. I believe when I first became a disciple, Vishwagurujī sent Swami Gajānand to teach me how to sing. But Swami Gajānand is a musician and he had no patience for me. Very often, when I was learning a bhajan, it was not in the ashram or in my house but somewhere else, so the atmosphere was not conducive for learning. I learned the meaning of the bhajans; I do know the meaning when someone sings. But I do not have the voice, and Vishwa Gurujī will have to give me the voice. Oh, you want me to speak something? I thought I was going to sing a bhajan. Okay. What shall I speak about today? I am overwhelmed when I come here. I am always very impressed with everyone present. Although Viśva Gurujī gives me so much honor, I offer my honor back to Viśvagurujī. And when I hear from everyone, I feel very humble, because I have so much to learn from each one of you. You have so much history with Vishwa Gurujī—a long, long history. I just spoke with someone from childhood who met Vishwa Gurujī, and their whole family for generations are disciples. What I have also found out, in my conversation with many people, surprises me. I have met many family members who are disciples, yet, surprisingly, perhaps a father or a son still thinks they do not need a mantra. Perhaps the understanding of mantra is not there yet. I urge those people who have no mantra: it is essential. The mantra helps us to liberate our mind. We are all bothered by our mind, and that is why we are here: to find peace with our Gurudev. I have said this is heaven on earth. This is more than a holiday; this is peace. So, mantra means to have peace in your mind. I do urge those who have no mantra—it is an absolute must. Also, some say, "I have met, they have already left," or, "Maybe when I come back, I will think about it." But we do not know whether we can live another day. We think we will take it some time, but unfortunately, we do not know what tomorrow holds. We can miss the boat. The mantra will liberate us from our mind, and that means you become a disciple of Viśva Gurujī. When you get a yoga name, it means you work towards that name. I have found that some people have mantras but refuse to have names, and some people have names but are not sure about mantras. The mantra means that you become Gurudev’s disciple. But when you have a name, it does not mean you are a disciple. Your name guides you to the Name. When we are born, our parents give us names, but they do not know what our future is. Gurudev will give you a name that means you have to work towards that name. That is why we all have different names; it means Gurudev knows what your future is and that your name will guide you to that future. That name will lead us to the future. But some people say, "I just have a mantra. I like my own name. I don’t need a yoga name." Both are very important. So I urge those who have no mantra: please, do not wait. You might not have tomorrow, because we do not know.
