The Essence of Kriya and Gratitude

Kriya is any action, from blinking to cosmic motion, and through it we learn. Every source of learning, from a parent to an angry man, is a guru deserving gratitude. This thankfulness, symbolized by the salt of hospitality, creates loyalty and societal harmony. True education cultivates human culture and wisdom, not just information. The Satguru teaches the culture of the soul, possessing pure eyes that reflect the inner self. He is the savior whose satsang is a boat across ignorance; leaving it returns one to karma. The Guru seeks the disciple who, like the philosopher's stone, can be transformed.

"From whom we learn, we shall be thankful."

"Gurudev can turn the disciple into the Guru."

Filming location: Dungog, Australia

Good morning to everybody, and good evening to all European devotees, dear brothers and sisters around the world and here in Australia. Many beautiful blessings are coming from the beautiful Devapūjā Ashram in Dangong, Australia. Today is foggy, and just now it is 17 degrees. It is beautiful. Yesterday at this time it was 47, and now it is 70. So it cannot be boring; it is always, always beautiful. We spoke the day before yesterday about Anuṣṭhān, Kriyā Anuṣṭhān—what Anuṣṭhān means and why one does it. We spoke about fasting, making malas, fasting on the full moon or every Monday, going to the Śiva Lāī (which means the Śiva temple), and performing Abhiṣeka with the Mahāmṛtyujaya Mantra or the Oṁ Namaḥ Śivāya Mantra, or fasting on Thursday, and so on. Yesterday we also spoke about two things. First, that destiny is unchangeable. But there is a chance to enter into your destiny, to work for it more easily, to make it easier, clear, and understandable. And then, to seek the shelter of the Satguru. And when you have shelter in the Satguru, you should also know what that means, what confidence means, what trust means. There was a story about a disciple and his snake. Do you remember? Today, again, we speak about Kriyānuṣṭhān. Kriyā simply means to do something. Kriyā simply means to do something, anything. To close eyes and open eyes is also a Kriyā. You did it. And you know, eye movements can cause you a lot of problems. Do not take it easy; all your eyelids are very gentle. Sometimes eyelids can cause big problems. So it is a kind of look. Every indriya has its kriyā. Breath is kriyā. Blood circulation is kriyā. The digestive system is kriyā. It is called pachan kriyā. The earth is also working. Our earth is also working. This iron, which we think is a great material, is not like that. It is also working. You know that it is working. Yes, if you do not know, then wait till the sun shines. So everything is a Kriyā, and in the entire universe there is a Kriyā happening. Movements of the stars, movements of the elements, everything is Kriyā, and our changes from one life to another life are also Kriyā. So, eye movements. Our Jīvātmā sees everything through the eyes. When you see others, clearly it means you see yourself. Through the eyes you can express anger, hate, greed, jealousy, conflict, guiltiness, and what not. Your eyeballs and your eyelids express your inner world. You can understand a person’s psychic situation immediately through the eyes. Which eyes have desires inside, looking full of desires? Viṣayas have a very kind, loving, and harmonious nature. There is a bhajan written by our Prabhujī, a beautiful bhajan: Param Guru Swāmījī, Māro Janam Sudhāryo Āj. There is a guru, a teacher. We have many different kinds of teachers. Who is teaching us cooking? He is also our cooking guru. Music guru, singing guru, driving guru, ironing guru. Yes, your mother or your father should tell you how to iron. Everything where you learn something is your guru. And that means now you should be thankful to that person, because in everything is called vidyā. Vidyā means knowledge, and as long as you did not know, it was avidyā, ignorance. Anyone can take away from your hands, but no one can take away from your buddhi, your intellect, or your brain. Who taught you this? Where did you learn these words? Where did you learn all this? From animals we also learn. From flowers, from trees, from every kriyā that is happening, we learn. And from where we learn, we should be thankful. Also, we get help everywhere. And when we get help, then we should be thankful. You know, when you drink milk of any animal—cow or buffalo, goat or sheep—there are four kinds of milk. One milk is from the mother. The third milk is cow milk. It means all animals: sheep, goats, buffaloes, cows, camels, and so on. When you drink their milk, then you should respect them as your mother. And the third milk is from vegetation: fruit juice, oil, so vegetable. And therefore, we should also respect and protect nature. And which is the fourth milk? So, the fourth milk is that spiritual wisdom, the knowledge. And from anyone you drink that knowledge—learning means drinking—you should be thankful. You should be kind. You have to maintain an ever-kind relation. Like we in India used to say, namak harām nahī̃ honā chāhiye. You know the Indians, this word? Namak harām nahī̃ honā chāhiye. Namak means salt, and harām means unthankful. Now, in your eating, whatever you eat, salt has very little content, no? Very little. But even if it is very little, where you got something, eating in that house, drinking or eating, you should always be loyal to that family, or to the friends, or the person. If you eat in someone’s house and afterward you do bad things, like stealing or criminal acts or anything, then it is a sin. And so in many countries, in Eastern European countries, there is a tradition; it is very close to the Indian tradition. When the guest comes to the door first, welcoming, what do they bring to the guest? Bread and salt. So you have on the plate a very nice loaf of bread and a little salt in one bowl, and you come to welcome the guest. What do guests have to do? Break, take the bread, dip it in the salt, and eat. Then you enter. It means that they welcome you, they accept you, and you accept them. Now you consume, you eat the salt of that house, and you should never be unthankful. You should be ever and ever loyal, protective, faithful, and so on. Through your body, mind, words, and actions, you should do good things for them. And that creates the peace, that creates the love, that creates the harmony. If the whole world follows such a tradition, there will be no war, there will be no fighting, because you accept them as your family, your brothers. But nowadays, unfortunately, even brother is going against other brother with a gun or a knife. Not only brother to brother, but father and son, too. Recently, it happened: one young man working in the army came home and said, "Father, write all property on my name now, not on my other two brothers." Father said, "But you have two more brothers." He said, "It does not matter. Sign, write, or I have a gun. I will think I am fatherless. That is all." So, Father said, "I am a retired colonel of the army." You know, I always hear, "I will think I am sonless." Such dialogues are between them. What a Kali Yuga, so things are not explained. Every country of the world has a beautiful tradition, and this tradition is created for the protection of society, the protection and respect of nature, and the protection and respect of every culture, religion, and tradition. Culture is living. Where there is culture, there is a human. And where there is a human, there is a culture. Culture is moving with the humans. It was the Australian aborigines here, how many thousand years, nobody knows, from the very beginning maybe. Then came the Europeans here. Europeans did not come with empty hands. They brought the culture. Yes? Then came the Chinese. They brought Chinese culture. Came the Indians. They brought the Indian culture. So culture is moving with you. Culture is the beauty of human life. And culture is uniting. So culture is traveling with the tribes. It does not matter where you are going, traveling the thoughts, the feelings. No culture is harmful. No culture is harmful. But harmful is when two cultures come together and human greed, the conflict begins. Then, it begins to fight. No, we do not want that. You know, many people in Europe and in many countries said, "We will not greet anybody like this. Hari Om or Namaste. This is a Hindu greeting or an Indian greeting. We are not Hindu, we are not Indians, and now the swine flu came. And now in this school and everywhere, they are telling, 'Do not shake hands, please.' We will say good morning. We will call this culture. You see? Yes. It was written in the newspaper and on the door of the school, 'Do not shake hands.' And also they said, 'Greet differently, no kissing. Do not give a kiss on the cheek or the shoulder.' So we come back to that beautiful culture. This hand is yourself, this hand is myself; we are two, you and me, one. Where? In the heart. They said we only greet God in this way. Yes, my dear, but where is God? In your heart. So, a cultural conflict brought the human far away from reality. And if you do this, this is a cult, this is a sect, this is a religion, this is another culture, this is not our culture. What a stupid way of thinking, to create conflict, to destroy, to disturb human society. Except so. So salt, it is said in the Bible, "Thou art the salt of the earth." You are not so big, like the earth. Little essence from this. And we also say in Indian, "Mitti se aaye, mitti me hi mil jaoge." You came from this soil, and you will merge into this soil. So, every action has a reaction, I told you yesterday. What you think, it will come back to you. Like, you are Australian, you know very well, if you throw the boomerang nicely, then it will come. You can hold it, and again you can throw it, if you are good. You can hold it again, but if you do not know, then you never know when it will come, and not in the hand, but here. So whenever you spoke a negative about someone, or directly to someone, it is still high time to go and pray, not request prayer, but pray for forgiveness. Otherwise, this karma you cannot digest. It will multiply day by day, like a pregnant woman. Day by day, the embryo is growing. That is it. So surrender. The competition between elephant and ant. So kriyā. So param guru swamījī. So one guru dev is the nature. Mother, father, what you learn from mother, immense wisdom you learn from mother. Your mother begins to talk to you on the first day when she came to know that she has received you. Every day in the bathroom, she is looking to see if you are comfortable. She tries to change her dress, that is not a belt, and so on. No, mother is touching you, speaking with you, and father feels bored, so he goes to the pub. Then along, mother, she is talking with you. So the mother wisdom, and when you were born in the lap of the mother, always she is talking to you. Father also, but just for five minutes, and then says, "Okay, you have here, I must go to work." It means not that the father does not love; the father has to work for you and for the mother. So someone said, an old mother, a 98-year-old mother, she was going away from this world, but very conscious, very alert. But she knew now her day had come. And her son was sitting beside, and the son asked his mother, "Forgive me if I made any mistakes, or if at any time I made you angry or troubled." She said, "No, my son, you were the best child, always. Give the message to the world. This is my last message." And he said, "What?" "When you were born, and for the first time you breathed in and out, your mother was with you. True? My child, when your mother breathes her last, it is your duty to be with her." No, but a beautiful thought: she was there, and she closed her eyes and went away. So consciously, so clearly, before going, closing her eyes, she gave the message for a very beautiful connection, the relation of mother and child. And how many people? Because of the wife. Wife said, "I do not like your mother; she is always negative to me." And the son said, "She is not." "Yes, she is." Okay, one day, two days, the third day, the wife said, "I want to have a separate apartment. I am going to my parents. If you want, you can come there." And the son becomes so angry with the mother. "Mom, this, and mom, and mom, you are terrible, and mom, you are always like this." Now he puts all her problems on the mom and goes away. That is it, because that young girl who came in the house had no culture. Did not learn the family culture. Nowadays, children and youth have no education. All are without education. Mahāprabhū. You think the higher education of university is education? That is only how to earn the bread. That is all. Does not matter if you are a doctor, a professor, or the professor of the... Scientist of scientists, still you are working for this, how to unbreak. What makes you the human full of culture, knowledge, wisdom, and love is the education from your parents, brothers, sisters, grandparents, and Gurudev. That makes you a human. Otherwise, you learn, you become great, but you lose the human quality. There is a story. There was one man who studied, had many, many degrees: doctor, doctor, professor, professor, and this and that and that... and that and that, and he had a very high position. So he had one house near the countryside, and one man came, very thirsty, very hot weather, like here, 46 degrees, very hot, and he went to the door of that man. The man was sitting on the sofa and reading a newspaper, and the television was running, and the guest who came, the man, the thirsty man. "Sir, I am sorry to disturb you, but I am so thirsty. I am so thirsty, I am dying. Can I have a glass of water?" He said, "Yes, wait, please. My servant, a man, will come and give you water." He was waiting 10 minutes. He says, "Sir, I cannot speak. Can I have a glass of water?" He said, "Yes, wait. A person will come." After 10 minutes again, he said. "If you have no water, sir, I cannot walk. Even now, I am so... can I come and drink?" He said, "No, wait. Some men will come." And the thirsty man says, "Sir, for a while, you can become also a man. You can become a human too. Do not be full of ego of your position." That is it, Mangalpurī, understand? So education is that which makes a human a human, not that education which makes you blind of your position, and all the time you are walking like a giraffe or the camel, no? So, from whom we learn, we shall be thankful. Even we can learn from the angry man. A very angry man had anger, and his wife said something to him nicely. He always meant good, and he was angry, and with a fist he hit the glass door instead of her, you know. There are many men who do, but women hardly do. And it was injured, you know, cut by glass. They had to go to the doctor, and every day for one week, he had a hanging hand here in front of him. "This is your anger, this is your anger, you know. Look, this is your anger." And others also learn: never do like this, otherwise you will be one month handicapped. So we can learn from everything. Then second is Paramguru. Param means the highest, supreme, Satguru Dev. So when we meet the Satguru Dev, then he will teach us the culture of the Ātmā, the universal culture. So, Mahāprabhujī said, "Gurudev, today when I met you for the first time," Param Guru Swāmījī, today my human life is completed. I have now become a human. Param Guru Swāmījī, māro janam sudhāryo āj. Today, my life begins to be successful. Param Guru Swāmījī, mera janam sudharyo aaj. And what is it? Nirmal Janka Nainah Ji Bhavan, Chandan Sareer, Har Har Bhavan, Jeevan Taran Karne Prabhu, Jeevan Taran Kar. My boat was sinking in the ocean of the world, but you came and you saved me. Sant Gurudev is that one, nirmal jana nain hain. Their eyes are nirmal. Nirmal means pure. Mala is impurities, and nirmal is pure. So you can see in the eyes of a person if he is angry, jealous, hateful, conflicted, desirous, this, that, everything. And you can see from the eyes how happy the person is to see you. Now, full of respect, love, humbleness, kindness, joy, happiness, it is, everything is reflecting through the eyes. Who is that? Your inner self. Your jīvātmā, your jīva, your soul is so happy, and that is reflecting. Within you, there is no dirt. Mal vikṣepa āvaraṇa. These all are removed. Mental impurities, karmic impurities, thinking, feeling, acting, speaking, these are all positive, it is purifying your soul, making your soul free from the karmas. Negative is covering yourself with the dirt, like today you see the fog; we cannot see anything. You see, hardly we see 150 meters, this tree standing, then maybe 100 meters or 50, and then there is no vision. Similarly, you have no far vision because it is polluted, anger polluted. The eyes are so pure. You know, when you look at a little baby, how nice, pure eyes. You see a small fish when someone is fishing. Oh God, that fish is suffering. With the mouth, she tried to speak to you, "Please help me, bring me back into the water." And her beautiful pink eyes looking to you and saying, "Oh man, are you a man, a human? What do you do to me? Look, a nice rabbit, beautiful pink eyes, a deer, a cow." Every animal, they are so innocent. Their eyes are so beautiful, beautiful. They speak with their eyes to us, and you know, as long as you are in the body, you will be looking through your eyes, and others can see you in the eyes you look under. Black pupil, you will see your picture inside, and when the person is dead, then you can look in there; there is no reflection. The self is gone. That self is looking through the eyes. There is one best quality of the sandalwood. Called Bhavan, and that has the best smell, fragrance. So the embodiment of that Param Gurudev is like, his prāṇa is like that sandalwood. It is said that wherever Mahāprabhujī was standing and the wind was blowing, Gurujī always went in the other direction. He changed the direction. Mahāprabhujī said, "What are you doing?" He said, "Lord, this wind carries your divine energy, and it touches my skin, my body. At least let me have this energy in that way." Radiance is called ābhā-maṇḍal. You call them auras. When you sit in param-gurudeva or self-realized master satsaṅg, then you have, you are one, it then your consciousness, their consciousness is in one light. Now we are all in one ābhā maṇḍal. When you go to the temple, pilgrimage to the ashram, then you are walking or driving, you are thinking of the ashram, you are thinking of that place. Till you come there, you become that place, that holy place. You become already, because that light is within you. And then you make a parikramā, going round and round, which means now you are diving into this divine energy radiance. But as soon as you go back into saṃsāra, you fall into the cold water. Hurry up! Again, prapañca. All these worldly difficulties come. It is not easy. Māyā can throw the rope and catch you back at any time. Where are you going? You come a little far, and that rope is—somebody is sitting, throws it, and says, "Come here, sit down, do not go far." That is Māyā. Maya. So Maya means everything, everything. Do not think women are Māyā. Man is Māyā for woman, and woman is for man. The money, this, this, that, everything. It is called temptation, so stay above the temptation. You cannot say, "No, I do not want anything. I go away, Hari Om," and then die. Okay, then die. Now, there is a beautiful mango, and there is a temptation. Everyone wants to eat mango, and I also want to eat mango, yeah. So, but there is a different kind of temptation and desire. Everyone has a different one, and someone is allergic to mango. Then one says, "No, never eat mangoes, that is terrible," because that person is allergic. All right. He came as a saviour. Param Gurudev comes as a saviour to let the old souls cross the ocean of ignorance. The satsaṅg is a boat. All the souls are sitting in his boat, and Gurudev is the captain. If you remain in the boat, be sure he will bring you to the mainland. But in between, if you jump out, it is not a mistake of Gurudev. Then there is a shark waiting for you. Yes, the shark says, "Come to me, I love you, I will take you in my stomach." There in the boat, you were only dizzy and sitting there. So that shark means that you jump out from the boat of your Gurudev and you go somewhere else. Do not expect that you will have, then karma will come again. Then the karmas, which Gurudev tried to iron or press down to release, but you jumped out, can come suddenly like a heavy disease or anything. Yes? Many diseases, mental problems, cancers, this, that. Because you went out of the Gurudeva’s boat, and where you are going is not accepting, because you rejected it at the astral level. It is said, "No, you are a passenger of that boat, so that is it." We say, "The donkey of a watchman, a laundry man, is neither at home nor at the beach." Because traveling between the river and home, carrying the clean laundry and all the dirty bags, and this. So, Dhobī kā gāthā, the donkey, neither at home nor at beach. All the time struggling. So then you get this karma back again. But there is a time again to realize, where do I belong? Like birds fly away, but in the evening, they ultimately come back to nest. No, every animal goes for grazing and going here and there, but finally comes back to their place. Similarly, this jīvātmā, the jīvātmā again will come to Param Gurudev, to his shelter. Where is the paramānanda? Parāśmanī guru namahe śiṣyadhātu suvaranah... Haradhatu suvaranah kaua se hansa kiya, guru kaua Soham dhari avajaparam. Maro janam sudharyo, jaddu jati jagame. Mari hari guru raki, mari shamrat raki la. Parashmani guru naam hai. Paras is a precious stone; only we know the name. We did not see it; maybe somebody would show it, but there must be. Otherwise, there cannot be a name. So there is a precious stone, money, that is called Paras. And when this precious stone, money, you touch to the iron, or iron comes near to the Paras, it immediately changes into gold. Yesterday we went for a walk, and I was walking like this and looking, if there is somewhere we will touch this iron, and we will have the money to build the retreat here, but I did not find that. Gurudev is looking for the Pāras, looking for such a disciple, Pāras, you touch it and change it into gold. But it is said, Paras can only turn iron into gold, but Gurudev can turn the disciple into the Guru. Gurudev can make a disciple a guru. But you should be a disciple. You know, they are followers. There are three kinds of followers. One is called a follower. One is the disciple who is following you. He is called a follower, and who does not follow you is a follower. That is it. So many fall over because they are walking blindly, going here, there. "Oh, here is good. Oh, this is nice. Here I like it. Here is more harmony. I like clear thoughts." You fall over, but still someday Gurudev will come and will take you up. So it is said, Parīśramī Gurudev, Śiṣya Dhātu, Svāṁhoī, Kauwāṁ Se Haṁsā Kiyā, So’haṁ Dhānam, Parīśramī. Hari Avaaz, Gurudev made me from a crow to the swan. Through that mantra, "śo’ham." "Śo" means that, "ham" means I. I am that. That I am. Who? Ātmā, thyself. You are that one. Āpan milatāto Gurudev. Gurudev, if I would not have made you, this life would have been a big, a very terrible tragedy. What kind of tragedy? Lakha chaurasi me javata janam janam, Maharaj, then again I would have to go in this cycle of rebirth and death in different forms of life. Aapna milta to guru dey hoti motihan, lakha chaurasi me Mahārāj Param Guru Swāmījī maro janam sudhāryo. Āj Śrī Nārāyaṇa Puru, Śrī Deva Puruṣa Bhagavān, Śrī Nārāyaṇa Puruṣottama, Śrī Deva Puruṣa Bhagavān, Hare Hare Deva Puruṣa Bhagavān. Deepa Kahe Danya Devane Prabhu, Deepa Kahe Danya. Mara suphal bhaya sab kaaj, param guru samiji. Maru janam sudharyo aaj, dhubati jag Mari hari guru raki laaj, dhubati jag Mari samrat raki laaj. Deep Narayan Bhagwan ki jai. Devīśvara Mahādeva kī jai, Dharma Samrāṭ Satguru Svāmī Madhavānandjī Bhagavān kī jai. Śrī Nārāyaṇa Puruṣottama. Nārāyaṇa, God Viṣṇu. Nar Nārāyaṇa. We are human. Nar. The soul, the soul. And Nārāyaṇa is Viṣṇu. So the soul has to turn into Viṣṇu. Then this Jīva becomes Śiva Svarūpa. Then you come to the Śiva Saurūpa, you become one with the Brahman. Śrī Nārāyaṇa Puruṣottama, Puruṣottam means the best in human. We are all human, but there are some holy, divine, great humans, like Devapurījī. Shri Nārāyaṇa Puruṣottama, Shri Dev Puruṣa, Bhagavān, Dev Purījī, Shri Dīpā Kehe, Dānya Devane, Mahāprabhujī, say, "Thank you, Gurudev. All my work is done successfully through your help, Gurudev." Therefore, Kriyā, Kriyā is great. Do not think that I will have one Kriya Yoga, and I will do this and breathe left and right, and no breath, and little breath. And more breath, and hold the breath, and exhale, and inhale, and there is no heaven and hell, okay? Every step is a kriyā, and do this full of consciousness. So the kriyā, anuṣṭhā, which you are doing is a very great thing, and in the next speech I will speak about kriyā, what you are doing, the fact, and so on. Now, I wish you a very nice day, nice Kriya rounds, nice lunch, and good rest. In the evening, we will see each other again here for prayers, and we will speak something about mantra.
