Gurudev is always merciful and loving

A satsang discourse on the grace and necessity of the guru.

"It does not matter how tired his physical body is or how exhausted he may be. When he is with all of you, with his bhaktas, he always wishes to stay as long as it is possible for him."

"If we want to be freed from this cycle of death and birth, then we need Gurudeva, because he removes this cycle of death and birth from all his bhaktas."

A speaker addresses a gathering in the presence of Gurudeva, expressing gratitude for the guru's loving endurance. He explains the essential role of the Sadguru in spiritual life, using the story of Dhruva's devotion and a parable about two Brahmins discovering that all holy rivers purify themselves at the feet of a true guru. The key theme is that the guru's grace removes all sorrow, purifies sins, and liberates the disciple from the cycle of birth and death.

Oṁ Śalākapurījī Mahādeva Kī Jai, Devādideva Deveśvara Mahādeva Kī Jai, Śrīdīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān Kī Jai, Hindu Dharma Samrāṭ Paramahaṁsa Svāmī Śrī Mādhavānanda Purījī Sadgurudeva Bhagavān Kī Jai, Viśva Guru Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara Paramahaṁsa Svāmī Śrī Maheśvarānanda Purījī Gurudeva Kī Jai. Nahaṁ kartā prabhu dīpa kartā mā śāntiḥ śāntiḥ. Sadāśiva samārambhāṁ śaṅkarācārya madhyamām, asmadācārya paryantāṁ vande guru-paramparām. We are all very happy and blessed to have the presence and blessings of our beloved Gurudeva, Viśva Gurujī, today. As we were speaking of yesterday—love, devotion, and the love Gurudeva has for all of us—this was very evident when you all came for darśana. How happy Gurudeva was to see each one of you. It is sometimes tiring to give prasāda, yet Gurudeva tried to give it to everyone individually and bless each person. We saw Gurudeva slowly falling asleep, so we asked, "Gurudeva, would you like to go for lunch and rest?" He said, "No, no... we stay, we stay." This is the beauty of our master: it does not matter how tired his physical body is or how exhausted he may be. When he is with all of you, with his bhaktas, he always wishes to stay as long as it is possible for him. That is why we all love him, and it is important for us to be there for him, to be present, to be as devoted as we can, and to have that faith towards him, knowing that everything will happen as he wills. You may have heard of a great bhakta. When you look at the sky, there is a very bright and strong star in the north. In India, it is called the Dhruva star. There was a boy, a prince of a province. At that time, kings had multiple wives. He had a problem with his stepmother; he was very upset, and she did not like him. He wondered what to do, how things would happen. She wanted to get rid of him, to kick him out. He went to his mother, and she asked, "Do you believe in God?" "Yes." "Do you believe in your guru?" "Yes." "Then go to the forest, meditate, find your guru, and everything will be okay." As we all listen to Gurudeva—Guru Ājñā Vicāraṇīya—Gurudeva has mentioned many times that there are many types of gurus. First are those who give you birth, your parents. They teach you the first steps in life, how to move ahead. Then, when we go to schools and colleges, come our second gurus, our teachers, who teach us about the education system and all subjects. Then comes the Sadguru, Satgurudeva, who is the highest guru we need in our lives. We always say in our prayers that Bhagavān Śrī Rāma and Bhagavān Śrī Kṛṣṇa, who are incarnations of Lord Viṣṇu, also had gurus. So we human beings must have a guru. We also sing about all the pilgrimages in the world; everything is in the lotus feet of Gurudeva. That is the beauty: you do not need to go to India to have darśana of all the pilgrimages. Gurudeva came here to Slovenia for us, and you all have his darśana here. He is always going to be with us. He always comes to us. We also go for Guru Pūrṇimā there, or for Gurujī's Mahāsamādhi there, but to make it easier for everyone, Gurudeva comes to his bhaktas when a bhakta asks for help from a pure heart within, saying, "Gurudeva, please, Gurudeva, come." He listens to our prayers and comes to us. That is the beauty. So Dhruva went to the forest and was meditating, doing his tapasyā. Then Nārada Muni—we have all heard his name—came and became his guru. He showed him the path and gave him a mantra, just as Gurudeva always gives us guru mantras to repeat in our day-to-day life, which brings us internal happiness, guides us, and calms us down. In the same way, Nārada Muni gave him a mantra and said, "Chant this mantra, and you will get your answer; everything will be okay." Dhruva chanted that mantra again and again until finally he realized, and God became happy with him and blessed him: all your problems will go away. As we were singing yesterday: when we have Śrī Viśvagurujī, then what type of chintā, what type of questions, what type of sufferings do you have? Nothing to worry about when you have the guru kṛpā. When we place our head at the lotus feet of Gurūdeva, then there is nothing to worry about. All your sorrows and problems will go away. Dhruva said, "Thank you, Lord." Dhruva then received the blessings from God that he would be remembered as that star in the sky. When you look at the night sky on the north side, you see one very prominent, shining, strong star. That star is called the Dhruva star. Because of his deep tapasyā, his deep meditation, and his dedication to the guru, he attained that spot in the sky. In the same way, Gurudeva is always trying to give us the highest spot. He is always trying to hold our hands, as Umāpurījī was saying—very forgiving, forgiving all our mistakes. I have encountered this multiple times: it does not matter what I do, Gurudeva will still accept us. He will not let us go. He will not say, "I give up, get lost." He will always say, "No problem, come," because that is the merciful guru. That is the loving Gurudeva. That is the beautiful, beautiful love he has for all his disciples within him. It does not matter what you do in your life, how you were in the past. No problem. It is never too late. You come to him, Gurudeva, he will give you blessings, and everything will move smoothly. We are all very blessed to be connected to Gurudeva. It is not that we found him; he found us. If it were not for him, if he did not come here to Europe, we would not all be sitting here. He came here to create this beautiful family of ours, this beautiful yoga and daily life system, which is not only for the young or old but for all categories. You can see how people are connected to Gurudeva—it is not only one or two generations, but I think four or five generations are disciples of Gurudeva. That is how it is, because the paramparās work in the same system. When you are a disciple of the Guru, it also works in the same system. We are all very happy and blessed that Gurudeva is here. Thank you, Narasiṅghjī and all the organizers, for organizing this beautiful program and inviting Gurudeva here. I am also very thankful to Gurudeva, very blessed that he brought me with him. Many blessings from Gurudeva, many blessings from the paramparā, much love. It is said that when you have gurus or anyone in the same position as a guru, it is good to remain quiet, not to talk too much. So short and sweet is always good. Now I request Narasiṅghjī or someone to speak a little to the people. Do any of you still remember the Sannyāsasukta? Okay, I will sing; you sing with me if you remember: "Nā karmaṇā na prajayā dhanena, tyāgenaike amṛtatva mānuṣuḥ. Pareṇa nākaṁ nihitaṁ guhāyāṁ, vibhraja ekaṁ tad yadayo viṣānte. Vedānta-vijñāna-suniścitārthāḥ, sannyāsa-yogād yatayaḥ śuddha-sattvāḥ. Te brahma-loke tu parānta-kāle, parāmṛtāḥ parimucyanti sarve. Dhāma vipāpaṁ paramaṁ prabhūtaṁ, yad padma-kośaṁ puram adhyasādgṛhyam." Tatrāpi dharmaṁ kākaṇaṁ viśokas tasmin yadantas tadupāsitavyam. Whether Swāmījī goes or not, we do not know. We still do not have land, we still do not have a camp, we do not have anything. When we know something, we will let you know. Otherwise, whoever is coming to India is most welcome. You will stay in Jadan, and we will have Kumbha Melā there. So if Gurudeva is in Jadan, our Kumbha Melā is in Jadan. A disciple can always write some stotra, mantra, stuti, something for a guru. But when a guru writes something for a disciple, then we know how great that disciple is. So, how great a disciple was Viśvagurujī? Our beloved holy Gurujī, Hindu Dharma Samrāṭ Paramaṁsa Svāmī Mādhavānanda Purījī Mahārāja, wrote a bhajan dedicated to Viśvagurujī. That is the greatest achievement a disciple can have—that a guru writes something for him. The land of Bhārata-bhūmi, dhanya means we are blessed, and the Indian land is blessed to have an incarnation like Viśvagurujī in that land, where all the great maharṣis, all the great yogīs, all the incarnations of gods incarnated. Our beloved Gurujī incarnated there. All the pāpas, all the sins from all the three tapas, all will be removed by the grace of Gurudeva. He has also said—my favorite part—which means Gurudeva considers us all, his disciples, as his own form. He considers all his disciples as his own form, and he removes all problems from their lives. He frees us from the cycle of birth and death. We are all stuck in this cycle; we are all in this birth, death, birth, death. Cradle, bed, cradle. Then we go to school, come back home: school, home, school, home. Then we are done with school, like I am. But then we have work, home, work, family. Work, family, and then you said pension. It is not pension; it is tension, because then you are home, hospital, home, hospital, and then from hospital, death, and then finished, and then again born. So if we want to be freed from this cycle of death and birth, then we need Gurudeva, because he removes this cycle of death and birth from all his bhaktas and gives them the ultimate achievement of self-realization and mukti, freeing us from this cycle. This means Mahāprabhujī keeps Swāmījī in his heart, keeps him with him, just as Viśvagurujī keeps all of us in his heart. In the same way, Mahāprabhujī is keeping Swāmījī in his heart. Śrī Mādhavānandajī is saying in deep happiness that Mādhavānandajī is always full of happiness, that he created this beautiful bhajan for Swāmijī. This is the greatness of Viśvagurujī. We are all blessed that Viśvagurujī is here. We are all happy and thankful that Gurudeva is here with all of us. Oṁ Śalākapurījī Mahādeva Kī Jai, Devādideva Deveśvara Mahādeva, Jai Śrīdīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān, Jai Hindu Dharma Samrāṭ Paramahaṁsa Svāmī Śrī Mādhavānanda Purījī Sadgurudeva Bhagavān, Jai Viśva Guru Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara Paramahaṁsa Svāmī Śrī Maheśvarānanda Purījī Gurudeva, Jai Sat Sanātana Dharma, Jai Āj Kī Ānanda, Jai Sab Santṛṣṭa. Which means: do not try to find the logic behind why the guru gives you something. So if Gurudeva says, "Talk more," then we talk more. Sometimes we might wonder, "What will we talk?" That is why we sang "Nāma kara," and then it comes automatically, hopefully. As we know, even destiny can be changed by the grace of the guru. When we say that all, like Rāmakṛṣṇa, everyone had a guru, then also, when we have the guru, all problems, all things are removed. We all know that. There is a beautiful story from Ānanda Motī about how the caraṇarāja, the soil where the guru stepped, is also enough to remove all sins from our lives. Two paṇḍitas were going from Rajasthan to have Gaṅgā snāna. As it is said, once you have snāna in the holy Gaṅgā, all your sins are removed. So at least once in their lives, as Pūrṇā Nānjū was saying now about Kumbha Melā—why do people go to Kumbha Melā? It is so they can have a holy dip in the saṅgama. Saṅgama means where all three rivers unite: Gaṅgā, Yamunā, and Sarasvatī. Where these three rivers unite is where the saṅgama is, and that is where the Kumbha Melā happens. That is where we dip and remove all sins. So these two Brahmins decided to go for Gaṅgā snāna. At that time, we did not have beautiful Mercedes like Narasiṅghjī's, which drives at 220, but we had a number 11 vehicle. In India, we say "pāda," which means vehicle, which looks like 11—which means our two feet. You walk like this and hitchhike on bull carts. So these two were walking for many days. Every night they would stop. On the way, someone met them and said, "If you want the essence, the full package, if you want everything in one, so that you have darśana, then make sure you only eat in the houses or ashrams of those people who have already had Gaṅgā snāna. Otherwise, you will not die if you do not eat for one or two days. Do not eat; starve a bit, but only eat in those places where the households had Gaṅgā snāna." They said, "Okay, if he says this will give us more blessings, then why not?" So they continued. Wherever they stopped at night, they would go to a house and ask, "Did you have Gaṅgā snāna?" "Yes." "Okay, then we will eat in your house. Otherwise, we cannot eat. Sorry." If some houses had not had Gaṅgā snāna, they would just sleep outside a temple and not eat anything that night. This journey continued for many days—days turned into weeks, weeks into months. Otherwise, if we go under 220, we are there in one night, but you know, it took months to reach there. Ten kilometers before the Gaṅgā, where they were supposed to bathe, it was already very dark and late. They said, "Okay, it is night. We will relax for a while and sleep here." There was a beautiful āśrama there, and obviously, why ask? In the ashram, the great saints had obviously had Gaṅgā snāna; we will stay there. So they stayed in the ashram, had dinner, prasāda in the ashram. Everything turns into prasāda. Anything made with love, anything made with the blessings of Annapūrṇā Mātā, with the blessings of the Guru, becomes prasāda. Even if Gurudeva gives something which is not very tasty or very healthy, which I do not like, that also turns into prasāda. So I take a little and give rest to Agni Devajī. So anything given by the hand or blessed by the hand of the guru, or which comes from the kitchen, Annapūrṇā Bhandāra in the ashram, is prasāda. They took the prasāda and later went to the Gurujī who was taking care of that ashram. They said, "Gurujī, we came from so far. We were walking so many days; we had a long journey, and we want to have Gaṅgā snāna. Do you know how far Gaṅgājī is from your ashram?" He said, "I do not know." They said, "You do not know? You are near the Gaṅgā, and you do not know how far the Gaṅgā is? Have you never been for Gaṅgā snāna?" "No." They said, "A whole hour's journey?" This whole one and a half month, we were following the rule that we would only eat in those houses or places where the person had done Gaṅgā snāna. And now, where we think a great Mahāpuruṣa, a great yogī, lives near the Gaṅgā, a few kilometers away, does not know the way to the Gaṅgā because he never went to the Gaṅgā. They were very upset, very sad. They sat outside their cottage where they got the room and said, "What have we done? All is lost. All this great tapasyā we did, all this work, has gone in vain. Now what will happen?" That night, they saw a black-dressed female lady entering the ashram. As soon as she entered, she went to Gurujī's house. Gurujī had gone to sleep, so outside where Gurujī's feet were, they touched those feet and put the dust of those lotus feet on their head, and they turned into beautiful white dresses, beautiful devīs. The two people who came said, "Now we know why Gurujī never goes for Gaṅgā snāna. He has black magic because people are coming to him at night and transforming from something to something. There is surely some black magic going on here. We need to be very careful." Then one lady comes, goes to the kitchen, cleans the dishes. Another lady comes, transforms, does the jhāru, sweeping the whole ashram. A third comes, cleans Gurujī's house. When they were leaving, the two people said, "O Devī, who are you, and who is this Gurujī? Why did you come here, and how did you suddenly transform?" They said, "I am Gaṅgā, this is Yamunā, and this is Sarasvatī." They said, "The rivers, yes." "Then how did you come here? Because it is said in the Vedas and Purāṇas that in the lotus feet of Gurudeva are all the pilgrimages. You all come and bathe in us, and we are then full of your sins and all your dirt. That is why we were all black. But when we come and touch—not even the lotus feet of Gurudeva, but the dust where he stepped—that purifies us completely, and we turn into complete Devīs, which we are. Every night, after you all bathe in us, we come here and do sevā of Gurudeva." That is why the sevā we were talking about yesterday is very necessary and important. With that sevā bhāva, with that dedication, with that pure love towards Gurudeva, all sins will be removed, and we will again be purified from all problems. Then, slowly, Brahmā, Viṣṇu, Maheśa, Hanumānjī, all the gods and goddesses came, made parikramā around Gurujī's cottage, and left. Again, they were all so shocked. What is happening? All the gods and goddesses are coming. So all the gods and goddesses also came and took refuge in the lotus feet of the guru. That is the importance of a guru, to have the guru in our lives, because that will remove all sorrows, pains, problems, and purify our mind, soul, body, everything. It releases us from this cycle of death and birth, and we will become and unite with the ultimate Supreme Self. But that is only possible with the grace of Gurudeva. That is why we are all blessed to have Gurudeva, to be here in the shelter of Gurudeva. He is always protecting, guiding, and helping us. Śrī Dīpa Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān Kī Jai. Do you want to say some thanking words? Just for finishing, just express our thankfulness. I think I can speak in the name of all of us: we are beyond thankful that Viśva Gurujī came, took the effort and time to stay with us. Although he was very tired, he came today to bless us. In the same way as outside the sun came, I think in all of us again the sun came to our hearts in the form of a wish for Gurujī. For this, we are beyond thankful. Thank you, Gurudeva, and praṇāma. As you all know, we are now living in the moment, being very unpredictable. So after lunch and after rest, we will see if we are proceeding somewhere or if we stay. If we stay, then we will see if Swāmijī will come or not; otherwise, we will come in the evening. Whatever will be will be updated on the group. If Viśva Gurujī stays, then tomorrow morning again satsaṅga with Gurudeva. We will see. Just be flexible.
