The 3rd Sri Swami Maheshwarananda Festival (2/4)

The longing for the divine is the core of spiritual search. External pursuits bring only change, not lasting joy. Saints direct the search inward, where the beloved is found. The essence of creation is Oṁ, the sound and form of God. Knowing this secret, saints abide in eternal bliss. Practice purifies the layers of being, revealing the higher Self. The guru incarnates to bestow the knowledge and path for self-realization. This teaching dispels the illusion of separation from God.

"Somehow, the world pulls us outward, but there is always change."

"Without Aum, your spiritual practice is senseless."

The next bhajan we will chant is from Mīrābājī: "Tuma bina re yonā jaya." This longing is always immanent within us. We are searching for this joy, this everlasting joy—to be safe, to be in peace, and not in ignorance. We are searching for that. Somehow, the world pulls us outward, but there is always change. We know that, yet we still hope to find it there. But the saints tell us, "No, no, go inside. You will find everything in yourself." That which we are searching for—Mīrābāī was saying, "I cannot live without you. You are my beloved one. Please come to me and give me your darśan. When I cannot see you, I am like a lotus without water or a dark night without the moon." Day and night, I am restless. I have so much pain in my heart. I do not even want to eat, and at night, I cannot sleep. I do not know what I should say. I have so much longing. Please, only you can solve my problem. You are the beloved one of my heart. Please do not hide yourself. Please be so merciful and come to me. I am your servant from life to life. Please give me this mercy, that I can bow down in front of you. Kamalacandabhinaracaṇṇī, Isitomādhikyabhinasacaṇṇī, Isitomādhikyabhinasacaṇṇī, Pulavyākṛṣaṇādhijodnādhiraśan. Vasanāpūkanindivasanānī, vasokattatānā, vasokattatānā. Now there is a beautiful bhajan written by Paramahaṁsavānī Mātā Ānandajī, "Holī Gurujī." The bhajan is "Oṁ Kāra Rācanā Śarīra." Holī Gurujī explains that the whole creation is derived from Oṁ. The saints know this secret of Oṁ, and because they know that, they are living always in bliss. They are always in ānanda. It is not because they know this intellectually, but they are that in their inner being. The inner being is this Aum and is this bliss. It is in the consciousness. Aum is the sound, the form of God, and Aum is light without shadow. Aum is like the sky everywhere—eternal, independent, not bound by anything. We receive this information now. We are listening, and because we are so lucky to be disciples of a master, our guru, we have mantra, āsana, and prāṇāyāma. We know we are eating healthy and pure food. We are somehow able to understand, not only with the instruments of intellect or in our thoughts, but through our practice it is revealing itself within us. With all our practices, we are purifying our kośas, this living form. Then automatically we will be more in contact with this higher Self, which is eternal, independent, and is consciousness. From this Oṁ, there is a division into the guṇas: sattva, rajas, tamas. Māyā, the world, develops out of these guṇas. As Swāmījī often says, we are like a fish thirsty in the water. All living beings are living in this Oṁ as embodied beings. All this knowledge—because consciousness has knowledge—comes through this Aum. Aum is this divine knowledge, and the Vedas were also written out of Aum. So, Oṁ is the highest symbol of God. Holī Gurujī says, "Practice, repeat all together, Oṁ." With this repetition of Oṁ, the divine light will awaken. That is why we should constantly meditate on Aum, and all your worldly sorrows will be destroyed. I was thinking, in our Western world, we still have this word in our Christian belief. For a very big church in Germany, we say "Dom." The big church, the house of God—this is Oṁ. Also, the "Amen" we say in church, its source is Aum. This is the basis of all. All saints, all yogīs, they keep this Aum in their heart. Without Aum, your spiritual practice is senseless. Viśvagurujī also said that when you repeat or listen to a mantra which does not begin with Aum, it is not complete. This also shows that we are disciples of a real divine master, because he can give us this knowledge, this information. He knows that because he is one with that. Now we just have to do it in our practice. Holī Gurujī says that through Aum you come into ānanda. This is the divine vibration. All karmas will be purified through it. What is karma? It is something stored in me. Perhaps I am not conscious of it, but it is like a shadow. Something is closed in me; my energy is not free. It is blocked. When we chant mantras, because this is the highest divine energy, it will purify that and open these blocked energies. It is very practical; we just have to do it. Through the chanting of Aum, you will cross the ocean of the world. "My adoration, you are." Now he is speaking to Mahāprabhujī: "To Devpurījī, you are my personalized form of Oṁ." In Hindi it is written, meaning "I bow down to you." Now we will chant. "Juga, juga, jīvo Maheśvarānanda." This bhajan was written by our Gurudev's Guru, Paramahaṁsavāmī Mathavānanda. He explains to us that our guru has been incarnating for many lives to bring us the teaching of God. He showers the immortal blessings of Mahāprabhujī upon us. Holī Gurujī says it is a great fortune for the land of India, Bhārat, that such a powerful, mighty soul incarnated. He removes all bad karmas, which are the source of the three kinds of sorrows, the three tapas. As the full moon cools down heat, he develops within us bhakti, devotion to God—this connection to God. I think that is a very important, main thing we learn from our Gurū Dev. In our Western world, we always think we are separated from God, and God is somewhere else. We are here, but we are not one with that. But our guru told us, "No, no, it is not like that." He gives us the knowledge that we can realize this. We call it self-realization, or at the same time, God-realization. He gives us this knowledge and the practice. With that, we can reach this highest state. He is above the world, and he is able to give us everything we need. What do we need? Knowledge. This knowledge. And we have it. Now it is more and more up to us to use it, to take this responsibility. Of course, we are connected. Our Guru Deva is everywhere, but now we shall practice with this knowledge to observe and to realize that. He shows us this path, and while doing so, he needs nothing for himself. In this way, he shows us our real nature. At the same time, in our daily worldly life, it makes us independent. Holī Gurujī says, "Mahāprabhujī is always with our Guru Dev." And Holī Gurujī also says, "Please, let us overcome all circumstances, all trials." Juga Juga Jīvo Maheśvara Nand Jī Siddhipadāyālukyamṛtasi Siddhipadāyālukyamṛtasi Śāntabarāsohānand Juga Juga Jīvo Maheśvara Nand Jī Juga Juga Jīvo Maheśvara Nand Jī Jīvo Maheśvara Nanda Juga Juga Jīvo Maheśvara Nandajī. Nāgateva, Nāgateva, Juga, Juga, Jīvo Maheśvara, Nanda, Juga, Juga, Jīvo Maheśvara. God bless you. We will chant. "Sunosaki, Satguru Gara Aya." Here is a short translation from Viśvagurujī: Listen, my dear friend, my inner friend. Today, my Guru Dev came to my house, to my door. All my inner flowers, lotuses, are opening. Each cell of my blood is full of bliss, full of love, because my Satguru has come. Blessed are those for whom the Satguru came for darśan and for satsaṅg. The worm will become a bee. He offered us this knowledge, this spiritual knowledge. The verse of life changed completely. In one moment, from the words of my Gurudev, it turns into gold. There is such a big difference in the value of my life compared to before. That which was before is gone. If a bamboo tree grows in a sandalwood forest, it will take on this fragrance. When water flows into the Gaṅgā River, it also becomes Gaṅgā water. You will let go of your past karmas and you will not identify anymore with your previous wishes. When you do this, you will become free from birth and death. Lāla Nanjī, who wrote this bhajan, offered his life to his master, Swāmī Dīp Mahāprabhujī. Sanam sakhi sakha gur gharayam, Kali kali hara shabatai. Kali kali hara shabatai, Kali kali hara shabatai. Kālī, kālī, hara śabatai aśaban vapalatāv aśaban. This is from Guru Nānak. Like all saints, he explains that we should not lose our time and should repeat the name of the Lord. Time is passing. That is why your mind should repeat the name of God. We know this is a form of our mantra. If we have the wish to emerge from this cycle of birth and death, or if we want to live a better life with more consciousness—more balanced, healthy in mind, thoughts, feelings, intellect, in our whole being—then we should not lose our time. Perhaps you remember, a few days ago Mama Nereśvāszka Mīkānis Vapuri told us that it is written in the Mahāśiva Purāṇa: a human needs a thousand good lives, and after that he begins to long for more. Then he starts to search for something more than just life—already after a thousand well-lived lives. Then we start to search for meaning, to see if there is something more than just daily coming and going. I think we are steps further because we could find a master; we found our guru. Or, the other way around, it is said that the guru found us. Perhaps it was like small birds in the nest: they open their beaks when they are hungry, and the mother or father comes and gives food. I think it was also in you; we were not just searching, and then we could find our Gaudi founders. Guru Nanak says in this bhajan: Without the name of God, it is like a bird without wings, an elephant without its trunk, a wife without her beloved husband, or a father without a son. Such is a human without the name of God. It is like a waterfall without water, a cow without milk, dry earth without rain, or a fruit tree without fruits. Such is a human without the name of God. It is like a body without eyes, a night without the moon, a church without light, or a learned one without the Vedas. Such we would be without the name of God. The essence is this: passion, anger, pride, greed—look at this, give it up. Also jealousy, give that up. You are holy. We can do this when we feel this inside; then we can say, "No, I do not want this. Nothing can happen that makes me proud or full of anger or jealous. I do not want this. I let that go. I will purify myself, liberate myself from them." Then we will reach that place, because in this world, nothing belongs to us.
