The Purpose of Human Life and the Wish‑Fulfilling Grace of the Guru

Satsang is rare, obtained through merits gathered across many lifetimes.

Human life’s purpose is not merely eating, drinking, sleeping, and raising family. Animals also do these things. True purpose is coming to saints’ feet to purify the mind. Saints come to unite beings with God and dispel darkness. The Guru is a wish-fulfilling tree, granting according to faith and devotion. A person saw a saint as a buffalo, then after chanting a mantra, saw him as human, then a deva, and finally recognized the divine. Purification of the mind happens through steady practice. Another story tells of a man under a Kalpavriksha who imagined food and rest, and they appeared, but the story breaks off, showing the mind’s uncontrolled state. The boatman Kevat asked only for grace to cross the ocean of existence, not wealth. When going to saints, ask only for devotion and peace of mind. The world is like a dream; only the divine is real. Truth exists unchanged in past, present, and future. God pervades every particle. Always remember the Divine, engage in devotion, and the boat of life will cross. Satsang is a priceless jewel, not always available. Use the body’s support to embrace this joy fully.

"The Sadguru, the divine Lord who comes, is like a wish-fulfilling tree. Whatever imagination one holds, whatever faith, whatever devotion, that fruit is received."

"Bhagavān Śiva says, 'Umā, I share my experience: true worship is of Bhagavān alone; Bhagavān is truth. This world is a dream.'"

The wish-fulfilling Kalpataru, the ocean of causeless compassion, the Saccidānanda Bhagavān Paramātmā. Salutations at the paired feet, to the supremely sacred, that divine great paramparā, Om Sri Alakh Puri Ji, Siddha Peeth Paramparā. Paying respects to all these great ṛṣis, we bow in the morning to the venerable, worshipful, most revered Śrī Sadgurude Bhagavān at His solitary feet, and we offer obeisance to the Mahā Maṇḍaleśvar Srijomi Gyaneshar Purī Jī Mahārāj on the stage, and to this supremely sacred and supremely divine event, which is organized under the auspices of our revered Bhagavān Srīdīt Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī. By His divine grace we have all gathered here. Leaving behind our homes, villages, and families, we have come to partake in the invaluable, rare, and true association of satsang. We could have stayed at home, but by the grace of Paramātmā, an inspiration arose in our hearts that if we also engage in saccāṅga sārvan, then by the supreme grace of Paramātmā, such an opportunity arises. It is said in the scriptures, in the Śrīmad Bhāgavat, that after birth after birth, kalpa after kalpa, and yuga after yuga, such a time comes. When we receive satsang, it happens when the accumulated merits of many lifetimes converge, when the merits of countless ages come together. Only then do we receive this satsang, and this satsang itself is so supremely pure, in that divine stream which is the essence of all the Vedas, the essence of the scriptures, the Upaniṣads. People are supremely fortunate; they are benefiting from this divine satsang in the presence of the revered Gurudev Bhagavān. Dear ones, the Paramātmā has given us this human life, and this human life has only one purpose. What is that purpose? Is it merely eating, drinking, sleeping, and expanding the family? No, this is correct. The way we live in the world, animals also live in the same way. Animals also have families; they also nurture and raise their families. If one starts to take pride, thinking that by raising children they have done some great deed, that is not a big matter for Paramātmā. We have been given support, we have been given strength, and we are acting accordingly. But the true guidance is this: when we come to the feet of the saints, what should we do? Bhagavān also said that the mind is purified. There was an ignorant man who neither accepted the ātman, nor Bhagavān, nor the saints—he accepted no one. Once, a saint arrived in that village. And when saints come, what do they do? Saints come with the sole purpose of uniting us with Bhagavān. The saint asked him, “Brother, how do I appear to you?” Now, he had no interest in the saints or anyone else. He said, “Mahārāj, you look like a brown patch in our field; that’s exactly how you appear.” The saint said, “Your internalization is not yet pure, not sacred.” Then he asked, “Brother, how do I look now?” The other replied, “O Maharaj, now you look a little more human.” The saint said, “Alright, keep continuously practicing the mantra I have given you, do not stop even for a single day. I will go on a pilgrimage and return.” After some time, the saint returned and said, now if the antaḥkaraṇa becomes pure, then bliss will arise. Once more, he went and came back again. Then what did that person do after coming? He ran to attain various siddhis, like when Gurujī comes and we do daṇḍavat praṇāma. What power do we rely on to dispel darkness so that we may come into the light of jñāna and be illuminated? Let there be joy, let there be bliss, let there be contentment, and may our well-being also be ensured; this is why the great saints come to this earth. Bhagavān Krishna says, “I bestow that to Arjuna.” Even Arjuna does not see Him as Bhagavān, but when divine vision is granted, the cosmic form of Bhagavān is revealed. So, firstly, as the eternal avatāra, I also take secondary avatāras from time to time. When I take an avatāra, Bhagavān comes for some reason, taking avatāra in a complete form. That is called a secondary avatāra. And the eternal avatāra is our king, like the divine great ṛṣis of our paramparā, the infinite śrī. So, the Lord appears before us in the form of Viśvagurujī; He is none other than Bhagavān Himself manifesting. It is only our lack of vision—how our sight is, how our faith is, how our sādhanā is—that prevents us from seeing Him. He comes in two forms, and in those very forms, the saints who are of Bhagavān do not attain the fruit, as you all saw in the example of Kalparuṣa. Here, by the grace of Pujya Gurudī Bhagavān, a Kalparukṣa is present. There was a person, this is an old story from earlier times, who was carrying goods and traveling. As he rode, he began to think, “I am tired, and along with tiredness, I am also hungry. If, by the grace of Bhagavān, I could get a proper meal, Maharaj, what a blessing that would be.” Now, Kalpavikṣa was sitting below, and as soon as he imagined, the imagination immediately became real, and five dishes were brought and placed before him. Instantly, he became pleased and received the meal. Having received the meal, Maharaj, what happens next? Does sleep come or not? Maharaj, after eating, now it is time to sleep, to rest. Now his mind desired rest, so let him rest, but for resting there are stones below; if only he could get a proper cot, a velvet cushion, it would be very beautiful, just as the imagination is beautiful. Now the inn has arrived for foot massage and service, and he fell asleep. Now that sleep came, after a little while he returned. O King of the awakened ones, suddenly here in this forest, I am sleeping alone. The Sadguru, the divine Lord who comes, is like a kalpavikṣa. Whatever imagination we hold, whatever faith we have, whatever devotion we maintain, that is the fruit we receive. If we desire wealth and prosperity, what does the Sadguru, the divine Lord, grant us? They bestow wealth and prosperity. Look at the example right in front of you—this brother here. When we see the events of his life, we are amazed; people are amazed, and people do not easily believe it either. When a desire is completely fulfilled, it is truly the grace of the Sadguru Bhagavān. Therefore, it is our lack of understanding. Such great saints and Mahāpuruṣas do come into our lives. They come, but what should we do? Let me tell you one thing: when you go to saints, what should you ask for? When you go to Bhagavān, what should you ask for? What do we do? Maharaj, when we are at home, we think, “Today I will go to the temple or to Gurudev,” and then we make a very long list—an entire hand’s length of things to ask for today—and we take that list. Having offered the prasāda of one hundred rupees, Bhagavān, all these lists are before you—whether you act on them or not. But brother, how can the Paramātmā, the inner knower, not know what your true need is? My mind, O Lord, is attached only to You. If you ask for this alone, your life will be fulfilled; otherwise, wealth and possessions will surely come to you. Do you know who the Kevat was? When Bhagavān Rāma was going for vanavāsa, he had to cross a river, and while crossing, his feet got wet. Maharājī said, “This boat will become a woman, and if it becomes a woman, then how will my daily routine, my livelihood, my life go on?” There was only one boat. There is, and secondly, there is a woman in my house. How will I bring your... O Prabhu, please grant me the dust of your feet. Only after washing your feet will I go and bring the boat. And Bhagavān agreed, the feet were washed, we sat in the boat and crossed over. Just as we crossed, now when we leave, Maharaj, you must give something to you... That in any circumstance, the wife should not leave her husband’s side; whatever the husband’s situation may be, she should remain with him in happiness and also in sorrow. Then Mother Jānakī understood what her Lord desired. She removed the ring she was wearing and said, “O my beloved, now I desire your compassion, O merciful Lord, bestow your grace upon me.” Just as there is rest, just as there is rest—what does the boatman say? “I want nothing.” Why? Why do you want nothing? Your task is to take from this shore to the other shore, and when you take them across, what happens then? You get your food, your family is sustained, right, O Lord? O Lord, the work that is mine is also Your work. What do You do? You also help cross this ocean of existence, and I too help cross from this shore to the other. O Lord, I have helped You cross from this shore to the other, so what should You do? You should help me cross as well. This is my request. He said, sya tayāla anugrātore, O Lord, now I only seek Your grace, Your grace alone. Grace is needed, I do not desire any other wealth, property, or riches. It is by Your grace that I am sustained, everything is going on well. The only thing is that my mind is becoming restless, so the mind should come to peace and come here to this divine satsang assembly, which is full of diamonds and pearls—what are they? They are priceless jewels that come again and again. No, look, you do not always receive it. By Bāvajī’s grace, you all are connected, and two or three such opportunities come in a year. And half a lifetime passes away while sleeping, the other half will also pass away; nothing remains. Therefore, when you come, take full joy. As long as the body supports, it is a matter of one day; the rest is always just night after night. It is pure gold indeed, so today embrace the joy fully, O enlightened Bhagavān. Oṃ Śrī Alakhpurījī, Siddha Pīṭha Paramparā. I would like to bow to His Holiness, our beloved Gurudev, Viśvagurujī’s holy feet. On the divine occasion of Mahāprabhujī’s anniversary, we are having divine satsaṅg on behalf of Mahāprabhujī’s divine day, samādhi day. And we all are so fortunate ones, the luckiest ones, that we are having this satsaṅg in Om Āśram, which is the spiritual center of Yoga in Daily Life. Here, our dear brother Mahāmaṇḍaleśvara, Śrī Swāmī Gyāneśvara Purī Jī Mahārāja, all dear bhaktas, all the sannyāsīs of this paramparā, I would like to say Hari Om to everyone and welcome to this divine satsaṅga. With the blessing of Viśvagurujī, we are having satsaṅg at Bhakti Sāgar. We have also got the blessing of Viśvagurujī today. Evening, he was here, he was blessing us. We had prayer with him, and then he said, “Okay, you do satsaṅg. I am going to sit there, blessing from there.” So Viśvagurujī is always with us, he is always giving blessing wherever he is. He is always thinking about us. He is always thinking, “What are my bhaktas, my children, doing? How are they doing?” So with his blessing, we are always doing, or we are always practicing, that we do always good. So the divine satsaṅg we are having here, you know the great ṛṣis, great saints, they come on this earth not for themselves, but they come for the human being, for the creatures who are suffering from this cycle of birth and death, which is always very hard. We are always trying our best to escape from this cycle so that we can liberate, we can know ourself for the self-realization. But without Guru, without divine sense, without paramparā, we cannot know anything. So we have got a great ṛṣi, or we are belonging to the great paramparā, which has given us the great sense. In that sense, they are showing the divine path. So Mahāprabhujī is always with us. He is always showing the way. You all have many times heard, or you have experiences in your life, of how Mahāprabhujī is guiding us. In any way, I have heard many stories from Europe that one couple, they were going through the car in the jungle area or somewhere, but they had finished the petrol or diesel or something, and they couldn’t go further, and then they were remembering Viśvagurujī and Mahāprabhujī, please help us. How will we go home? It’s dark already and nobody is here. There is no petrol pump near us, so please, God, help us. And suddenly, some guy came there with diesel or petrol. He gave them this thing, and they were filling, and they have got this thing, oil, and now they drive—they were driving the car to the home. So this is the blessing. When they saw, after one minute, there was nobody. So this is the divine blessing of Mahāprabhujī, when you have a pure, pure bhāva, purity, when you have the śraddhā, viśvāsa, belief, then it comes to you. So Mahāprabhujī is always, He is always guiding us. He is always giving the divine blessings. I was telling them stories about Guru Kṛpā, about Gurudev, that without Gurudev we cannot live in this life. Without Gurudev, we don’t know what to do, how to do, when to do. So when Gurudev comes in our life, He shows us each and everything. So I was telling stories that a saint was there, he was going to a village, and there was one person who was not believing in a god, in a saint, he was just living life, life like an animal, you know, what does an animal do? Eating, sleeping, having children, this life is animal. He was also living like that. So once a saint was there, he was thinking that I should give him some knowledge. I should bring him to God. So he went there and he was asking, “Oh human, do you know how I look, who I am?” Then he told, “You look like a buffalo, which is in our village.” Then that saint thought, still, his heart is not clean. He is suffering very hard, so I should tell him some mantra. So he gave a mantra and he just told, just chant it for one year till I come back. And after one year, he went back there, then he was asking again, “So how do I look now?” Then he said, “Okay, yes, now you look like a human.” Okay, that saint was happy that mantra is working. He is chanting the mantra, so it’s becoming slowly clearing, clearing his heart, his thinking, his doing. Okay, he said again, “Okay, I will go and I will come back after some time.” So after some time, when he came, then he was asking again, “How do I look now?” Then he told, “Now you’re looking like a deva. What do you say, deva? God.” Then he, next time when he comes the fourth time, then suddenly when he saw the Gurujī, he was not looking, he came and he ran, he just made daṇḍavat praṇām, “Oh Gurudev, thank you, now you are not a human, you are...” not a human body, but you are God, you have shown me the divine way, divine knowledge that I can now see each and everywhere God, so that is Gurudev, he bringing us from the ignorance to the knowledge, from darkness to the light. So with the blessing of Gurudev, we are also coming to the light, we are also going near to God. So this is only possible with the blessing of Gurudev. So we all are the luckiest ones, we are having the divine master in our life, and we should always follow. What Gurudev is saying, what he is guiding us, how he is guiding us, so that’s why we are always thankful to the Gurudev. Please, Gurudev, always bless us and guide us. Purī Jī, Purī Jī... Dev puriśāmā dev kī dev puriśāmā dev kī... And I forgot our music teacher, Ashok Ji, who sings very beautiful bhajans of our parampara, and he always comes here. So, welcome to this divine satsang, and we will also listen to him. Dip Narayana Bhagavane Ki Jai Papuji Garg. Who will sing the bhajan? Come, you all will sing the bhajan. Bhāījī, please sing. All devotees have received prasāda, yes, everyone has received prasāda. So those engaged in the service of preparing prasāda, as devoted disciples of the Guru and Bhagavān, you all take the prasāda and at least for tonight, as long as the body supports, what should you do? Listen to the satsang. It is not always that you get to meet, otherwise, by the grace of Paramāpita Paramātmā... What has been received, what should be done with it? It should be used rightly—meaning, to associate with the truth that is truth, to live with that truth, to walk with that truth. This is what is called satsang. So, what is truth? What do we call truth? If you accept something as truth, then what is called truth? Truth is that which exists in all three times—now the matter has changed; earlier you said one thing, and now it has not happened, so that cannot be called truth. What is called truth is that which remains the same in all three times. So, what remains the same in all three times? Is it you, me, or everything that is visible? This body is like a dream. In a dream, an elephant or a horse may come, sit, and leave comfortably. All the deities appeared before me, and as soon as I awoke, the dream shattered. So what do they say? This is not the truth; it was a dream. In the same way, what is this world but a dream? Who says it is a dream? I say it is so. Sathhari bhajan jagad sab sapna Ram Siyaram Siyaram Jai Jai Ram Ram Siyaram Siyaram Jai Jai Ram. Bhagavān Śiva is saying, “Umā, O Pārvatī, I am sharing my experience.” Bhagavān Śiva is sharing His experience: “Umā, I say my experience is the true bhajan, the worship of Bhagavān; Bhagavān alone is the truth. Everything else—what is this world but a dream?” “How is it a dream, Your Majesty?” “How is it a dream? Tell me.” “Because it appears right before you, Your Majesty.” “It is a dream.” That which appears to be but is not, but here, what time is visible? The time that is moving, in the present moment. So I said, among the three times, which time is running in the present? Present time, future time, past time—there are three times, there is the existence of three times. So, are these three times present? Was the āśrama there a hundred years ago? That which is not present in the three times is unreal; that which was Bhagavān before, is Bhagavān now, and will remain Bhagavān in the future—where is Bhagavān? Paramātmā pervades every particle of existence. Īśā vāsyam idam sarvam—wherever there is anything in the world, Bhagavān is in every particle. And the answer is the same: in every particle. Bhagavān is within me, so always remember that Paramāpita Paramātmā, always keep Him in your thoughts, always engage in His bhajan, and then, Mahārāj, the boat will cross over. Otherwise, it is not simply a matter of crossing from here to there. Let the lamps be lit and, sitting together, may we all experience the divine bliss of bhajans. Mātā jī, all of you please take a little pause; later in the morning, there will be another opportunity to come forward, alright? Right now, the bhajan mandali has arrived, so please give them some time as well. And by the grace of Bāvjī and Mahāprabhujī, you have showcased your talent through music up to the state level, bringing fame to Rajasthan. Rajasthan... All the way to the name, it is all by the grace of Bāvajī, and I have also heard the history of this place. Since my childhood, when I have been studying in this āśrama, many teachers have come, and many teachers have stayed here in this āśrama for one or two years, truly, Sarda... All this success is solely due to Bāvajī’s grace; it is your true devotion, faith, and trust. Surely, Paramātmā listens to you and fulfills your heartfelt desires. Among them, our revered Gaṇapatī also blesses abundantly. What does Paramātmā do? He showers blessings. How capable you are—if you go with a loṭā, O Maharaj, you will fill the loṭā; if you go with a thālī, you will fill the thālī; if you go with a bāltī, you will fill the bāltī. In this way, the grace of Paramātmā continues to shower. So, let us all...
