Celebration of Mahaprabhujis Mahasamdhi (1/3)

Today we celebrate the divine union and legacy of a great master.

We remember the day he merged with the Absolute. His life of 135 years exemplified perfect practice and humility. He served in a temple for twelve years and lived without sleep for sixteen. He possessed great power and knowledge yet mended his own torn clothes. His core teaching was simple living and high thinking. His ancient teachings were revived through his direct experience. He was a true Vedic master who saw and could explain Brahman. We celebrate this unification through devotion and song.

"Why are you hiding behind the curtain?"

"The Sadguru came today to kill the Jīvarīs."

Filming location: Jadan, Rajasthan, India

Śobhā ho sattasārī selātabraṅghle Osabhātabraṅghsā sabhichakhe Vedase jih prāṅgito hoyajābhāmā devākhī jai Chetā Chetā Ābhā Jīvā Gyānī Avasara Jāve Chetā Chetā Ābhā Jīvā Gyānī Avasara Jāve Chetā Chetā Ābhā Jīvā Gyānī Avasara Jāve Samāja, abhā, jīva, jñānī, avasara jāve. Thank you. Thank you. We are the fortunate ones today, remembering a great personality like Śrīdeep Nārāyaṇa and Mahāprabhujī. Today is the day he became one with the Absolute, returning to his original form. We celebrate according to the Tithi, the Indian calendar. Typically, the observance involves night-long singing of bhajans and lectures, followed by a morning celebration of life—a state we shall all achieve. Mahāprabhujī was renowned for his deeds and capabilities. We are grateful to Vishwa Guru Paramahaṁsa and Mahā Rāmānandajī for spreading the knowledge and teachings of Mahāprabhujī in Europe. One year before Mahāprabhujī’s departure, he asked Holy Gurujī what he desired. Holy Gurujī expressed his wish to write Mahāprabhujī’s biography. Mahāprabhujī ultimately granted that permission. Because of it, we are all here today, sitting together, celebrating the example of a perfect life and perfect sādhanā. In his long life of 135 years, we have only a small book detailing his miracles. Mahāprabhujī lived for 12 years as a pujārī in a Brahma Temple. He lived for 16 years in Bola Guda without sleeping. He possessed the power to give life and knew absolutely everything happening around him, yet he remained as humble as an ordinary person. Holy Gurujī once recounted that Mahāprabhujī would sew his own clothes. When a garment tore, he would mend it instead of changing it. When Gurujī offered him a new dress, Mahāprabhujī declined. Mahāprabhujī taught "simple living, high thinking." Even in the bhajans we just sang: "Why are you hiding behind the curtain? The person who can restore life, the person who nails..." Every thought concerning those who met him was directed to his Guru: "Why are you hiding behind the curtain?" These lectures are truly for us. These emotions, this desire, this wish to unite with the Divine—this is what Mahāprabhujī taught us through his bhajans. Today, we celebrate that unification. As stated before, whatever exists in this world is covered, immersed, and permeated by God, or as we know from the verse: Pūrṇamadaḥ Pūrṇamidaṁ Pūrṇāt. Pūrṇamudācyate Pūrṇasya Pūrṇamādāya Pūrṇamevāvaśiṣyate. From this Absolute Existence, Mahāprabhujī came, and then he merged back into it, leaving behind a profound knowledge. He was one of the masters who taught the complete tradition. His teachings are ancient, 10,000 to 20,000 years old; they are not new, but he gave life to those teachings. We possess teachings, and we have experience. Mahāprabhujī had the direct experience of what he taught. He was a true Vedic ācārya. He knew all the Vedas. He was a brahmaṇiṣṭha and a rotriya. He saw Brahman and could explain it. I will die for you, O Lord Nanda, I will die for you, O Lord Nanda, I will die for you, O Lord Nanda. In every satsaṅg, we have an anchor. We are the fortunate ones. Our dear guru bhaktas, Swāmījī’s guru bhaktas—Sukhyā Bhāī on the left, then Madhu Bhāī who was just singing, and Vimlā Bhāī—they are from Bhavī Āśram, about 60 kilometers from here. They sing Sūradāsjī’s bhajan "Rāmsaney," meaning they are from the Rāmsneī Sampradāya, the lineage of those who love Rāma. They have dedicated their lives to Rāma. Behind them, you can see Pāpū Rāmjī Gārg and his team from Jodhpur. Today, we are blessed with two great groups of singers: Sukiyābāījī and her team, and Papurāmjī and his team. We will now perform a Kīrtan for Gurujī for one minute. Let us all speak together, calmly and simply. Everyone please speak so that Gurujī may be well. Śrīmān Nārāyaṇa. There are two types of divine incarnations (avatāra): the eternal (nitya) avatāra and the instrumental (nimitta) avatāra. The eternal avatāra is that of the saints. The instrumental avatāra is like Rāma or Lakṣmaṇa. There are two avatāras: one is Narasiṁha and the other is Nitya. When great demons arise on earth, God incarnates to destroy them. The second avatāra is the eternal avatāra of the saints. The demon resides within us. When the demon sits within us, we shoot it with arrows in the form of words, do we not? I have been sitting here for many months. To slay them, the Sadguru shoots arrows in the form of words. Thus, the Sadguru comes to earth to kill them. Therefore, it is said: "The Sadguru came today to kill the Jīvarīs. Today, the Sadguru has come to kill the Jīvarīs. On the auspicious day of the Sun, I have the opportunity to meet my Guru." When the Sadguru comes, the auspicious sun rises. The sun rises every day, but when the Sadguru comes, the auspicious sun rises. Manro Dhokoe, Sudhra Gaya Sab Kaaj, Sahelya Mangalgao, Mara Sadguru Aaya Aaj. Guru Govinda Vināśī, Māre Kāṭe Lakchoras, Mane Ḍūbtān Dekhtī Rasi, Dīn Bandhu Mahārāj, Sahelyā Maṅgalgāo, Marā Sadguru Āyā Āj. Sada Indrajī Bhūthe Amṛt Vachan Mukh Chūte, Gurudev Vachan Uchhan Karte Hain, Voh Amṛt Jaise Hote Hain. Mā Puruṣa Ne Likā Hain, Veda Uddī Vinā Guru Lakhe Lage Lon Samān. Sadā Indrajī ugaṭhe, amṛta vācan mukh chūṭe, suntā hī kukarma chūṭe. Jo Gurudev ke vachan sunte hain, unke kukarm karte ho, to bandh ho jata hai. Ke nahī Gurudev ne aisā śabd kahā hai, toh hum aisā kārī nahīṁ kareṅge. Nahi toṁ Sadguru ke śabdõṁ meṁ aisī tākat hai. Toh phir kahe, Sadguru keval svāmī be abhigat antaryāmī. God bless you. I wish to say a few words about my father-in-law. He has come to listen to my great bhajans. I am feeling a bit cold. Bad nām ho chukh, dīdār dikhā. Swami Maheśvarānand Purījī Mahārāj kī āj ke ānand bolo Rām.
