The Perfect Sādhanā and Final Union of Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī

Today is the celebration of Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī’s final union with the Absolute.

Observed by the lunar calendar, the day marks his return to original form. Viśvagurū Paramahaṁsa Mahāśvarānandajī carried this legacy across Europe. A year before departure, permission was granted for Holy Gurujī to write the biography, enabling this gathering. His lifespan of 135 years held countless miracles, twelve years of temple service, and sixteen years without sleep in Bolā Guḍā. He possessed life-restoring power yet mended his own torn clothes, refusing a new robe to teach simple living and high thinking. The bhajans’ cry—“Why are you hiding behind the curtain?”—expresses the longing for divine union, voiced even by one who knew all hearts. That union is celebrated today, as declared in the Veda. From divine fullness he emerged and into fullness merged, leaving behind direct, realized knowledge. He was a true Vedācārya, a Brahmaṇiṣṭhrotriya who breathed life into ancient teaching. Devoted guru-bhaktas—Madhu Bhāī, Sukyā Bhāī, Vimlā Bhāī from Bhavī Āśram—sing Sūradāsajī’s bhajans and Rāma’s name. Papu Rāmjī Garg’s group from Jodhpur also joins. Here all sit beyond caste. Only devotion has drawn this gathering. Now bhajans will be heard. A brief kīrtana is offered for Gurujī’s healing.

“Why are you hiding behind the curtain?”

Today, we are fortunate to remember such a great personality as Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇ Mahāprabhujī. This is the day he became one with the Absolute, returning to his original form. We observe this according to the Tithi, the Indian lunar calendar. Usually, the observance includes night-long bhajans and lectures, followed in the morning by a celebration of the life we are all destined to attain. Mahāprabhujī was renowned for his extraordinary deeds and abilities. But we are especially grateful to Viśvagurū Paramahaṁsa Mahāśvarānandajī, for it was he who spread the knowledge and legacy of Mahāprabhujī across Europe. A year before Mahāprabhujī’s departure, he asked Holy Gurujī, “What would you like?” Holy Gurujī replied, “I would like to write your biography.” Mahāprabhujī granted this permission, and because of it we are gathered here today, celebrating the example of a perfect life and perfect sādhanā. During his long lifespan of 135 years, the miracles he performed fill only a small book. He served for twelve years as a pūjārī in the Brahma Temple, and spent sixteen years without sleep in Bolā Guḍā. He possessed the power to restore life. He was aware of everything happening around him, yet remained as humble as an ordinary person. Holy Gurujī once recounted that Mahāprabhujī used to mend his own clothes when they tore, rather than replacing them. When Holy Gurujī offered him a new robe, saying, “No, no, I have a new dress for you,” Mahāprabhujī’s life embodied the principle he taught: simple living and high thinking. In the bhajans we have just sung, there is the line, “Why are you hiding behind the curtain?” The one who can restore life, the one who instantly knows the innermost thoughts of everyone he meets, says to his Gurudev, “Why are you hiding behind the curtain?” These teachings are meant for us. The longing, the desire to unite with the divine—this is what Mahāprabhujī conveyed through his bhajans. Today we celebrate that unification. As it is declared: “Om Īśā vāsyam idaṁ sarvaṁ yat kiñca jagatyāṁ jagat”—whatever exists in this mutable world is pervaded and enveloped by the Divine. And further: “Pūrṇam adaḥ pūrṇam idaṁ pūrṇāt pūrṇam udacyate, pūrṇasya pūrṇam ādāya pūrṇam eva avaśiṣyate.” From that absolute fullness, Mahāprabhujī emerged, and into it he merged again. And he left behind profound knowledge. He was among those masters who taught the whole truth. Though the teachings themselves are ancient—ten, even twenty thousand years old—Mahāprabhujī was not new to them; rather, he breathed life into them. We may have the teachings, but Mahāprabhujī had direct experience of everything. He was a true Vedācārya, versed in all the Vedas, a Brahmaṇiṣṭhrotriya: one who has seen Brahman and can explain it. Glory to Madhu Bhāī, Sukyā Bhāī, and Vimlā Bhāī! At every satsaṅg, we are honoured and blessed to have with us these beloved guru-bhaktas—Swāmījī’s devotees: Sukyā Bhai on the left, Madhu Bhai who just sang, and Vimlā Bhai. They hail from Bhavī Āśram, about sixty kilometres from here. They are the Seṅgajās, singing Sūradāsajī’s bhajans and the name of Rāma. They belong to the Rāma-nāma Sampradāya, those who love Rāma and have dedicated their lives to Him. Behind them sits Papu Rāmjī Garg and his group from Jodhpur. We are doubly blessed today with two wonderful groups of singers: Sukhyā Bhāījī’s group and Pāpurāmjī’s group. You all know Sukhyā Bhāī, Madhu Bhāī, and Vimlā Bhāī, don’t you? They sing so beautifully. Here in India we have caste distinctions, and yet everyone seated here belongs to the same caste. Kewal āp logo kī bhakti ne mujhe yah rukhvāye, bākī kuch kisī ne nahī rukhvāye. To āp āge ham āj bhajan sunenge. Hamāre do bade se bade khalakhara padārga hai. To āp Dīp Nārāyaṇa Bhagavān kī jaya bolo, Satguru Dayāl kī jaya, Śrī Dīp Nārāyaṇa. Bhagavān Kī Jaya, Śrī Mādhavānanda Bhagavān Kī Jaya, Maheśvarānanda Bhagavān Kī Jaya, Bharadvāja Ṛṣi Muniyoṁ Kī Jaya, Satya Sanātana Dharma Kī Jaya, Māta Pitā Gurudeva Kī Jaya. One minute we will do Kīrtana for Gurujī. We will all say it together. I will say it in simplicity, you all say it so that Gurujī gets well. Śrī Māheśvarānanda Bhagavān Kī Jaya! Bolo Rāma Dekhumā Puruṣara Kaisā Bhāva Hai Likā Hai? Dhanyabhāga, Mere Sadguru Āyā, Sadguru Āyā, Merā Mana Harasā Āyā. Āpane Yūra Yū Harasa Re To Re Nahīṁ, To Āpane Kalyāṇa Ho Jāye. Jātaka Āpane Andara Aisī Bhāvanā Nahīṁ Hai. Baar le jāo, bhai.
