Sadhana

A spiritual teacher addresses practitioners at a retreat, emphasizing the purpose and discipline of dedicated practice.

"You spend your money and your holiday time. So for what did you come here? If you do not do the things for which you came, it is a pity."

"Mantra Anuṣṭhāna is very systematic and has a very strong, very positive influence on the consciousness. It is truly an inner purification."

The speaker outlines the retreat's aim: to use structured practices like Mantra Anuṣṭhāna for inner purification and recharging one's energy. He stresses the importance of sincere effort, advises on supportive practices like slow āsana, and encourages viewing spiritual techniques as divine tools for realization, tailored for people with worldly obligations.

We came here to practice. We came here to learn something. I always say that you spend your money and your holiday time. So for what did you come here? If you do not do the things for which you came, it is a pity. Therefore, please try to practice and concentrate. And if you cannot practice, then at least do not disturb others. We have enough karma yoga to do, so you can at least go for karma yoga. In this way, you will create good conditions, but the main aim is to practice. Mantra Anuṣṭhāna is very systematic and has a very strong, very positive influence on the consciousness. It is truly an inner purification. You purify your antaḥkaraṇa—manas, buddhi, citta, ahaṅkāra—and you also come to know your own vṛttis, your patterns of thinking. Everyone has in their life many things which disrupt them and many things which make them happy. The best approach, and you have the time during the anuṣṭhāna for this, is to purify your negative thoughts and negative qualities. These anuṣṭhānas are prepared for worldly people—meaning those who live in a normal world and work every day, with family duties and social duties, leaving little time for sādhanā. So from time to time, you undertake your spiritual sādhanā. It is like a system: after eleven months of working, you take one month of complete holiday. A holiday should be a time to relax and recharge your energy. Nowadays, holidays often become such that you do not recharge your energy; you lose it. Here, we have the opportunity to recharge our physical, mental, and spiritual energy. That is very important for all of us. When you are doing āsanas, you should do them slowly. Remain for a long time in one particular posture and stretch. This will replace long activities like walking great distances. Thus, you will not feel tired or stiff during your meditation. Also, during satsaṅgs and certain practices, you can sit in vajrāsana. That is very, very good; vajrāsana is refreshing for the body. We came here to recharge our energy, and then we will go back into the world and work. If one can do this anuṣṭhāna for five years, that would be best. But who has the time for it? In India, people sometimes say, "Swāmījī, I have no time even to die." People have no time even to die, and I have no money at all—not even to buy the poison. So who has the time? We have many social obligations and duties. But if you can do one week, one month, two months, three months, half a year, or one year, it is something divine. This technique helps to build your psychic strength. That is also significant. This Kriyā Anuṣṭhāna is very divine. The other programs you will have are also systematically and nicely designed. It is said in one of the books, in the sūtras from Patañjali, that practitioners should have devotion to their techniques, just as they have devotion for God. For you can only realize God through these techniques. Therefore, the techniques themselves are divine and holy. You should change your way of thinking towards your sādhanā. That is very important.
