About Prayer (from Ramayana)

The divine gaze perceives the quality of the heart in the moment of prayer. God recognizes the love within a devotee's request, not external status or duplicitous words. Prayer must emerge from the heart, yet if the heart contains doubt, jealousy, or anger, that is what is truly offered. God desires pure love, not selfish expectation or trickery. This presents a great chance for ascent or decline, with freedom depending entirely on one's own grasp. Liberation can arrive in a single, pure moment—an Augenblick. Therefore, continual self-purification is essential. If even one person achieves perfect purity, it can liberate all present.

"God does not see this. He sees what is in your heart now, in this minute, when you pray to Him."

"Freedom depends on you. It is you who can hold it, or you who can lose it."

In this world, and in the Vedas, it is the very nature of the good Swāmī, the good Lord, that when They listen to the request of a devotee, They immediately recognize the love of that person. What kind of love is there? You see, many times when we pray to God, we say, "Why doesn’t God help me? I was praying for so long. I was praying that God should protect my grandmother, but she died." God knows why you are praying; He knows what kind of selfishness you have there. Even a human being can see in your eyes what you are talking about, what your expectations are. So God does not want tricks. He wants love. The prayer should come from the heart. But what is inside the heart? If there is doubt, if there is jealousy, if there is anger, if there is something which is not in order, then these things come out. So God knows what is in your heart. God needs quality, and therefore, He realizes immediately what your expectation is. God has no dualities. Whether you are a rich person or a poor one, whether you are unlearned or learned, whether you are coming from the jungle or from the city, whether you are a good person or a bad person—God does not see this. He sees what is in your heart now, in this minute, when you pray to Him, and with which quality you are praying. So it means: do not give up your hope. We have a great chance. What chance? We have a great chance to fall down or to come up. Freedom depends on you. It is you who can hold it, or you who can lose it. Still, it is not too late. It takes very little time. It is said it takes the time of just closing your eyes and opening them—what they call in German, an Augenblick. We need only just such an Augenblick, such a second. But that should be a moment of great divine quality. So we are waiting for those seconds. Therefore, God needs pure love. And you have that. That is another good thing. You have that pure love, and you can do it. But you do not follow the Guru Vākya. You do not listen to me. You say, "Oh, Swamiji is always telling such things." We can do it. We will tell him, "Sorry, Swamiji, it was not like that." But the consequences, the fruits, are there, which you will suffer. Purify, purify, purify. If one of you can purify yourself this weekend to such a quality, then all who are sitting in this room can be liberated. That is my challenge today—"I don’t like challenge"—but it is a challenge. And that one will be a mortal holy person. So it can be. Some of you will be. I do not know. On Friday or Saturday evening, we will know. So whose heart is completely pure, like the sun shining? There is hope, but little. You know what it means, hopeless? There’s little hope. There’s not enough hope in it, but still, you have time. Try.
