Tri Tapas (from Ramayana)

A spiritual discourse on the protective power of satsaṅg and divine remembrance.

"Lucky indeed are they whom God sees with His own eyes... bathing in the lake of satsaṅg. Through this, that person is protected from great dangers."

"Let in your heart flow the river of God's name. This river will pull out all the roots of the sins."

A speaker describes the threefold miseries of life and explains that sincere devotees who immerse themselves in God-consciousness are largely protected from severe harm. Using the metaphors of a protective lake and a purifying river, the discourse emphasizes that constant remembrance, prayer, and participation in satsaṅg cleanse the heart and uproot sin, leading to inner joy and purity.

All the difficulties of the world do not assail that person who has understood this glory of God and who looks to God with great love. Lucky indeed are they whom God sees with His own eyes—that is, with respect and great joy—bathing in the lake of spirituality, in the lake of God's name, in the lake of satsaṅg. Through this, that person is protected from great dangers. We have three kinds of dangers in our life; this is known as tritāpa. We are all attacked from time to time by tritāpa: ādhibhautika, ādhidaivika, and ādhyātmika. These three tapas you know well, but let me tell you again. The disturbances from creatures—like people, animals, mosquitoes, tigers, snakes, flies, spiders, ants, insects, and so on—come and attack us because some tapas are there. Then there is karmic disturbance, which attacks through illness: physical illness, mental illness, psychic illness, and so on. And then one is attacked by other spirits, what you call ghosts or some other spirits. So, different kinds of powers exist in the world, and we are disturbed by them. That is right; we have to take care. But those who are under the mercy of God, of Rāma, are not attacked. They are protected. Yes, something may come a little bit. Instead of a snake, a mosquito will bite. Some percentage of karmas we have to go through, but not so heavy. It means this: when you spend your time in God consciousness, what wrong should happen? Who should blame you? No one. You are just praying, just meditating, just repeating the name of God. You are not taking away from anyone; you are not fighting with anyone. You are doing nothing against anyone. You are careful. You do not go unnecessarily somewhere. You do not disturb other creatures unnecessarily; you use your intellect to protect yourself. Then nothing will happen. Things happen when we are careless. Careless means we are not aware of God, we are not aware of ourselves, and we are not aware of what we are doing. This is it. In whose mind is love for the holy feet of God? Who loves God Rāma will bathe in this river or in that lake; they do not want to go away from this lake. O my brothers, those who will bathe in this lake, it is as if they are doing satsaṅg. Bathing in that lake means to go to the satsaṅg. Satsaṅg is very important. Everywhere, in every place, every saint tells about satsaṅg. If in the world satsaṅg would begin everywhere, then all this fighting and the wars would stop. But unfortunately, people do not want this; people want war. That is what Tulsidās jī said. While seeing such a lake, and realizing in the heart such a lake, and diving in such a lake, my mind became so pure. God, my heart is filled with joy; in my heart there are waves of bliss, ānanda, love and bliss; my heart is filled full of purity. From that heart, as a result of bathing in that lake of spirituality, one beautiful river came and began to flow from my heart. That is the Saryu River, in which even God Rāma was bathing. In that, the water is the significance of God Himself. Therefore, I give the name of this my poetry as that holy river Saryu. Because that river has all kinds of happiness, it is the root of harmony and joy. It has two banks to this river; that is what the humans are telling. One is the human's glory, and the other is the Vedas' glory. And the second is Śloka Veda. This beautiful Mānasarovar, the lake, she is like a beautiful young virgin, an innocent girl who is very pure, very humble. But when this river comes full of water, when there begin the strong waves and flood, then all the trees of the Kali Yuga, symbolizing sin, are all pulled out from the roots. So, let in your heart flow the river of God's name. This river will pull out all the roots of the sins. Everything will be washed away; the river is flowing here to purify everything and to give water to all. So, river of love, river of devotion, let it flow from your heart. If in your heart there is the name of God, your mantra, then you will be able to do it. Recording location: Czech Republic, Strilky, Summer seminar
