Request of Devas (from Ramayana)

A narration of the divine meeting to request Lord Śiva's marriage.

"O merciful Lord, you are now everything, but still you are asking us; if you want to know still, then with great devotion I request thee, we came with a great request, we need your help."

"O Lord Śaṅkar, all these goddesses who are here... they wish very much to see with their own eyes your wedding."

The gods, led by Brahmā and Viṣṇu, visit the meditating Lord Śiva. After exchanges of greetings, Brahmā makes a fervent plea on behalf of all the deities for Śiva to consent to marry Pārvatī, reminding him of her great austerities and his own compassionate nature. Śiva happily agrees, causing celestial celebration.

From there, all together, Viṣṇu and Brahmā and all other gods went to where the merciful Lord Śiva was meditating. Śiva and everyone, systematically one after the other, they greeted, they prayed, they praised Lord Śiva. Then the beauty of the moon, the carrier of the moon symbol, Lord Śiva, was again very happy; he greeted all guests, everyone, all colleagues. Viṣṇu was there. Brahmā was there; all devas were there. What a beautiful day, what happiness. After that, Lord Śiva asked them, and then Lord Śiva spoke and said, "O devas, tell me, please, for which purpose did you come here?" And he said to Brahmā, "O Lord, you are the knower of everything. How did you come here?" Brahmā said to Śiva, "O merciful Lord, you are now everything, but still you are asking us; if you want to know still, then with great devotion I request thee, we came with a great request, we need your help. I need your help." Lord Śiva gave his blessing and asked them, "For what did you come?" And they said, "Lord, you know, but if you still want to know, we have one request, and if your dear one requested you for something, you can't refuse. Even if you would like to refuse, but sometimes you can't say no. You see how the bhaktas put God also in some situations. Perfectly, certain protection. Protection of Viṣṇu and protection of Brahmā, how one is approaching." As Brahmā spoke like this to Lord Śiva, "O Lord Śaṅkar, all these goddesses who are here, they have such great happiness in their heart, and they wish very much to see with their own eyes your wedding." Bang, the whole universe was lightning, you know, and thunder and lightning in the sky and mountains, and everyone was shocked; what a surprise. I think Śiva was thinking, "Better I should have remained in samādhi." But this all is the disturbance from that Kāmadeva, and all these are the duḥkhas from the Kāmadeva; O destroyer and winner of the Kāmadeva! Please do something like that, that all people, all of them, they can see that big festival of your marriage; their eyes are thirsty to see this, make them happy that they can see full with their eyes. Please, Lord, O ocean of mercy, O Lord of Kāmadeva, the destroyer of the Kāmadeva, you have given your blessing to Rati, the wife of the Kāmadeva; you have done good, that's good. Now she was thinking, "Aha, now I know what happened; I should not be so naive, I should not be so innocent; someone just comes with little flowers and says, 'Yes, please,' and then you say, 'Okay, forget it.'" "O Lord, the Lord of Lords, best of all, you know the nature of the great one is this: they give first punishment to someone and then they give the blessing or mercy; always first they are angry, they give some punishment, and then they shower on them the blessings. You know, Lord Pārvatī has done great austerity, great tapasyā for you; please now accept her." As Brahmā requested, and he listened to this request, the request of Brahmā. As Śiva remembered the words of God Rāma, all that came in his memory, what was happening. Happily, Śiva said, "It will be." As he said, "It will be," all the devas in the heaven began to play the drums, dancing. The music started already. And from the heaven, the flowers were falling. Glory, victory, glory to this Śiva; the glory of the Lord of all Lords. Recording location: Czech Republic, Strilky, Summer seminar
