Human qualities

A spiritual discourse on the preciousness and purpose of human life.

"Human life is the most precious diamond. You will not get this diamond again and again."

"The most terrible tragedy which can happen or will happen in life is that one will die without realizing God or without self-realization."

Swami Avatarpuri addresses an audience following a one-month program, reflecting on the impermanent nature of life and time. He emphasizes that human life is a rare opportunity for spiritual progress, urging listeners to awaken their human qualities like love and forgiveness, and to practice diligently for self-realization. He states this guidance is his duty as a Swami, while asserting the journey is ultimately personal and determined by one's own karma.

We had a wonderful one-month program here. It was truly wonderful. It involved physical training, āsanas, prāṇāyāma, concentration, meditation, relaxation, and there was also pleasant walking. It was wonderful, and it was nice to be with you. We shall keep in mind the aim of our life, the reason we are born. All the temptations of life will soon be finished. When it has rained, there are high waves or high water in the river, but very soon the water will flow away, and the flow will become slow again. The nature of life is to be born, to grow, and to die. For someone it is morning, for someone the afternoon, and for someone, it is sunsetting time. This is symbolic. Some are very young, some are middle-aged, some are in retirement, and who knows for whom the sun is setting. Time doesn't wait for anyone; it doesn't matter who is who. And karma comes back to everyone. Two things are very correct: whatever we do will come back to us, and time will never wait for us. Even God Himself, when He incarnates here, is bound to time. Therefore, human life is the most precious diamond. You will not get this diamond again and again. Khānā, pīnā, bhogṇā, paśubhī, param sujan—eating, drinking, enjoying, creating children—in these, animals are also very expert. If humans are doing only this much, then where is the difference between animals and humans? Therefore, this precious diamond is not given to be thrown in the garbage. Don't throw it in the dustbin. Realize this life is very, very precious, and no one can help you. Only you yourself can help you. Anyone else who tries to help you will put you into confusion. When do they all need your help? Your help means your physical work. People love your work, not your money. And people love your money, not your skin. So, in this way, we should know the aim of my life, what a human is, and what the human qualities are. We shall try to improve our human qualities and try to get rid of animal qualities. That is the spiritual way: love towards all, understanding, forgiveness. These are all qualities which humans have, and you have these qualities. You shall try to awaken those qualities and utilize them. Many things happen in life, good and bad, but the most terrible tragedy which can happen or will happen in life is that one will die without realizing God or without self-realization. I can tell you, that's the biggest tragedy. And that will happen one day, that we will die physically. But if you keep on practicing, then you will not die without realization. And to come again into human life is not in your hands. It is not in your hands. Maybe it is only by chance. You can't exchange your body. You can't buy a body. And there is no protection upstairs somewhere, so you say, "Well, please, can you do this, God? Give me a human body; I will do this for you." There is no compromising. It is your deeds, your karma, that will lead you. So it is very personal for you. It is yours. It has nothing to do with anybody. You see why I'm telling you? I have no benefit. I have no expectation from you. If you realize God or not, it's your coffee. In Germany, they say, "It's not my coffee." So if you realize God or self-realization, if you go to heaven or hell, it's your thing. Go and enjoy; do what you want. Why am I telling you? I have no selfishness in this. But as a Swāmī, a Sādhu, and being your master, it's my prime duty to tell you this. You should think it over. You are not giving me anything. If you get self-realization, you are giving me nothing. And I have no expectation. But I can tell you that I feel in my heart that you should go on the right way. Otherwise, it will be a pity. The social position will not help you at all. All degrees will stay here. All your physical, mental, and intellectual talent will remain here. You came alone, and you will go alone. Where will you go after? Nobody knows. Therefore, it is a golden chance. God was merciful enough to give us human life, a beautiful body, health, good parents, and good luck that you made your spiritual path. So, celebration of a birthday means to remember again, to remind yourself why you are born. Every year is one year less in your life. Every day is a lost day. All days are lost days. It doesn't matter how yesterday was, but you can't go back to yesterday. It's gone. So, how many days, how many months, and years have you lost already? And how much do you have now still in the reserve tank? Now utilize them very carefully. That is my suggestion; other things are your decision. I wish you all the best, God's blessing, and good health. Thank you for coming, and I wish you good night. Dīp Nīl Bhagvān. Recording location: Czech Republic, Strilky, Summer seminar
