Discipline

A spiritual discourse on the importance of daily discipline and practice.

"Discipline is absent where selfishness begins. Discipline is absent when one cannot control desires."

"Whether in your profession, if you wish to become rich, to have money, to have a partner, or to have children—anything you wish to attain has only one path: discipline."

The speaker outlines the foundational role of discipline, explaining its breakdown leads to laziness and fear. He provides practical techniques to cultivate it, including fixing a wake-up time, a morning routine of washing and prayer, dedicated exercise, weekly fasting, and reading spiritual texts before sleep.

Many of you here practice yoga and perform your sādhanā daily, while many do not. I tell you, maintain the discipline: practice, practice, practice. Discipline is absent where selfishness begins. Discipline is absent when one cannot control desires. Discipline breaks where laziness appears. And when discipline breaks, laziness will come. When laziness is present, fear will appear. And when fear is there, everything becomes destructive. It is fear that makes you angry and aggressive. It is fear that makes you selfish, and it is your fear that creates anger. Why? Because discipline is God. A person who has discipline is never afraid in life, for everything you realize, you will realize through discipline. Whether in your profession, if you wish to become rich, to have money, to have a partner, or to have children—anything you wish to attain has only one path: discipline. Therefore, Patañjali also said that in yoga practices, if you wish to be successful, you must keep the discipline. Develop discipline in life. Now I will tell you how to develop discipline. There is one very effective technique, which I will share now. Tell yourself every morning, "I will get up at this time." It does not matter how long you slept, even if only half an hour; declare, "I will get up at this time." Whether at 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, or 11 o'clock—someone may have a night shift. If you work until 4 in the morning and sleep at 5, then get up at 11. Create one disciplined life. It is like this: you should have your sleep; it is not that you should not sleep. Sleep eight hours each day. You still have sixteen hours free for other things, and eight hours you work. Eight hours sleeping and eight hours working. You still have eight hours free for yourself every day. When you fly in an airplane from here to India, it takes eight hours. It feels so long and boring. Every day you have eight such hours. The second practice: tell yourself that as soon as you get up, you will first go to the toilet and bathroom and wash yourself. This is very important. The third technique: after washing, you will go to the altar, greet Mahāprabhujī, and offer one agarbatti or a candle. The fourth technique: then you will begin your exercises. Additionally, fasting once a week consistently provides significant training for discipline. Fix a day, Monday or Thursday. No matter how many temptations appear before you, uphold the discipline. Or, before going to sleep, read one piece from a good book: Līlā Amṛt, Bhagavad Gītā, the Bible, the Quran, the Upaniṣads, the Vedas, or another good book. Read one story or one article on a subject. That, too, is discipline. Recording location: Czech Republic, Trencin, Weekend seminar
