Why yoga helps

Yoga is a holistic system for health, integrating movement with a mysterious, blessing-based efficacy. Modern research validates yoga as a primary therapy. Its special power lies not merely in physical movement but in the transmitted grace from its saintly founders. This blessing, akin to holy water in a church, is the core healing agent. Anecdotes, like ash from a master curing illness, demonstrate this reality, which exists regardless of personal belief. The practice is given to humanity for benefit, with the saints' words manifesting as tangible help.

"Yoga is indeed one of the original therapies in the realm of health."

"Yoga is that blessing coming from the holy saints."

Our subject is health. We are all seeking good health. One scientist said, "Health is not everything, but everything is nothing without health." We know this to be true. Fortunately, in our modern world, there are thousands of possibilities for becoming healthy. The medical system has made immense progress. Yet, at certain times, there are individual cases that require specific attention. We shall address these individual cases. Ours is a holistic system of healing. We shall accept any kind of help from anywhere if it benefits us. Where help is needed, there is no room for arguments. Therefore, we shall look for that which can support our health. Yoga is one of the best ways to achieve good health. You may know that in recent months, many articles have appeared in various magazines, written by scientists who have conducted research on yogic therapy. You may know, or be surprised to learn, that yoga has once again taken a primary place in the field of health as a foremost therapy. Yoga is indeed one of the original therapies in the realm of health. But what does yoga truly give us? Movement. We can engage in many different kinds of movement: swimming, cycling, running, walking, and various sports. What, then, is special about yoga? How does yoga consistently help in a better way? This is something mysterious. Many people do not believe, but when they see the results, they must accept it. I would like to tell you what is special—the miracles, the mysterious elements in yoga that help everyone positively. Yoga is a system developed for the benefit of mankind, for our good health. And here begins the mystery of yoga. Those holy saints who developed this system, through their blessing, gave a father to humanity. You may believe this or not. But there are many, many stories of how such blessings help. I will come to some techniques and practical parts. This evening, however, everyone should take something home with them. Not merely that you came and listened to a lecture and that is all. I will try to give everyone something that will help you. Let me share one example, whether you believe it or not. Belief does not change reality. Whether you believe or not, the sun still rises every day. The story is very simple. It is about my grand master. He was a great holy incarnation. His name was Svayaṃbhu Devpurījī. He lived his life like many normal sādhus in India, and whatever he said came true in countless cases. An ill person would come to him and say, "Master, please help me. I have this disease." What did he do? He had no injections, no tablets or medicines. He did not prescribe any medicine either. He would go to his fireplace, called a dhūnī, and take two finger-fulls of ash, called bhasma. I myself tried to take it with me. It helped a little. What was special there that helped? That was the blessing. You go to a church—I do not know if you go or not, but many do. At the entrance, there is holy water. You take that water. Some take it in their mouth; some make a cross on their forehead. Why? Because there is a blessing inside, in the name of God—be it Jesus, or the saint to whom the church is dedicated. In the same way, I gave that ash in the name of Śrī Devpurījī. I said, "Take this bhasma (vibhūti); it is from Śrī Devpurījī. It will help you." And it functioned. So, yoga is that blessing coming from the holy saints. You can read more about Śrī Devpurījī in his book, Līlā Amṛt, which is available in your language. It is fantastic. When you read this book, you might think it is a fairy tale, but Devpurījī lived only about 50 or 60 years ago. In this way, dear friends, yoga is not only those movements; it is given to us with a blessing. The words of the great saints are always reality. Primarily, it helps us because of their blessing.
