Human life

A spiritual discourse on the true value of human life and self-realization.

"The days of a human life are counted only by those minutes and hours in which we think of God."

"Whatever has happened in your life, it happens because of you. If you are not here, nothing is here."

The speaker presents a teaching on measuring life by spiritual focus rather than worldly time. He explains that peace is found only in union with God and that disturbances are self-created illusions. Using metaphors of a running ant and a bird trapped in thorns, he describes the human condition of being ensnared by passions and urges listeners to turn inward, accept themselves, and use their inner divine light.

The days of a human life are counted only by those minutes and hours in which we think of God. Our life is measured by the time we spend thinking positively, with love, tolerance, and spirituality. Conversely, the days, hours, and minutes that are lost are those in which the human intellect thinks negatively, filled with ego and hatred. Jealousy and complexes, greediness and hatred—these represent lost time and lost thoughts. We must ask ourselves: What do we wish to realize? Why are we here? Why are we born? Where are we going? We are going home. Observe a small ant; it has no time, it is constantly running. Every creature that can crawl is crawling, that can walk is walking, that can run is running, that can fly is flying. We, too, are running; we even fly in airplanes and rockets. But do we ask ourselves: Where are we going? What is the destination? This running, this searching, this restlessness, will end only when we become one with God. The individual soul will never find peace in the heart until it has found God in the heart. Somehow, it is good that you do not remember your past lives. On the other hand, it is a great pity that we do not remember. If you enter deep into your consciousness and travel into your past, you will see how you have been treated, how you have suffered, been tortured, disappointed, lost, and lonely. Finally, we have come to human life. We are here now, and your life is in your hands—to be successful or to destroy it. Everything that disturbs you in your life is nothing, nonsense. Do not waste your time thinking about those things which disturb you. Do not waste your life trying to solve a problem you will never solve. That is not a true problem; it is only a temporary circumstance within your individual phenomena. One day you come out of it, the next day you jump back in. Therefore, Mahāprabhujī said: "I have to do with satsaṅg and spirituality. What the worldly people are talking, let them talk. Now I will not waste my time." This should awaken your inner self. So whenever you have time to think, think of God and think of your life. Every one of you, your life is a divine life. Every one of you has holiness within you, because the light of God is within you. What is living in you, the flame of life, that is the light of God. Therefore, you cannot say that you do not know God. If you say you do not know God, then you lie. God is wondering, saying, "How to ignore this person?" He is within you. That which is within you, your real Self, is a part of God. How joyful it is—the most beautiful thing you have within your heart. You do not feel this, you do not see this, and you do not know this. Why? Because you do not want to see and you do not want to know. That is the problem. What do you want to see? You want to see problems. What do you want to know? You want to know what others are saying about others, and that is why we are involved in the external world, in other phenomena. If you wanted to know, you would know immediately. But you have put yourself in such circumstances that it seems you are living in other phenomena. You are stuck in your ignorance; you are stuck in the thorns of worldly problems. That bird which is stuck in the thorns—no matter which direction it moves, there are thorns like hooks; it cannot fly away. These are the hooks of kāma, krodha, mada, lobha, and ahaṅkāra: passion, anger, pride, greed, and ego. Attachment to what? To external life. And that is the problem stuck in your mind. Especially now, in this time of the year when the sun moves to the south, the days become shorter, and nature withdraws—renouncing its fruits and leaves—a dark, cold, white atmosphere is created. Many of us feel depression. But you are not that person who has depression. Use your inner light. Those who have these problems should practice trāṭaka every day. Keep a strong light in the room and think of light. Think of positive things. Whatever has happened in your life, it happens because of you. If you are not here, nothing is here. North and west, south and east, above and below, front and behind—these only exist if you are existing. If you are not here, nothing is here. Therefore, there is no one to blame, only ourselves. And we have to accept ourselves. We should not hate ourselves. We should not be angry with ourselves, because if you are angry and hate yourself, you will lose your path again. Accept yourself. Accept your actions and correct your actions again. That is the message of the yogī. Recording location: Slovenia, Skofja Loka, Weekend seminar
