Help, o Lord

The cry for divine mercy arises from realizing life's passage and one's own helplessness. When love for God awakens, the heart pleads for liberation from the painful cycle of birth and suffering. The devotee's entire being becomes filled with a single, unshakable confidence in God's power to save. Such devotion brings supreme happiness and transforms one into a merciful being, as God's love manifests within. To cross the ocean of ignorance, one must unite with God, as iron floats only when attached to wood. This path, though not easy, is the most beautiful and divine.

"Lord, I do not know anything, but one thing I know: I have a great confidence, an immovable, unshakable confidence in you."

"Let us become one with God, unite with God, so that we may cross the ocean of ignorance, the ocean of suffering."

When such love awakes in the human heart, one begins to think, "Oh God, what have I done until now? My time is gone; I am old. What can I do now? I can do nothing." Only God can do something for us. Therefore, it is said: "O merciful Lord, bestow now your mercy upon me, so that my life does not pass without meaning, without realization. Let me not lose this life as I have perhaps lost millions of lives before. Do not let me repeat those painful processes again and again—to be born, to live in miseries, doubts, complexes, hunger and thirst, suffering, and to be killed once more. Lord, take me out of this cycle. I can do nothing, and it is getting late. But you can do it, Lord. Merciful Lord, please bestow your mercy upon me now. Liberate me." When a bhakta realizes this love for God, then what is in the mind, the heart, the feelings, the thoughts, and the entire being of that bhakta is only one thing. There was a great saint named Sūrdās, who wrote beautiful bhajans, beautiful songs. In one of them he said: "Lord, I do not know anything, but one thing I know: I have a great confidence, an immovable, unshakable confidence in you. Confidence in you, Lord, that you will liberate me." When such devotion awakens in the heart, your life becomes supremely happy. You will forgive all who have acted against you. You will forgive all who have disappointed you. You will become a merciful one, because love is God and God is love. That love will manifest in your heart, and thus you will be the merciful one. God is the merciful one. And when He, the merciful one, enters your heart, you become the merciful one. God is like a piece of wood, and we are like iron. When we throw iron into the ocean, it sinks to the bottom. But we wish to swim across. However, whenever we throw iron into the ocean, it sinks. What should we do? Put this iron nail into the wood, and then throw the wood into the water. Will it sink? It will not sink; it will float. So let us become one with God, unite with God, so that we may cross the ocean of ignorance, the ocean of suffering. This path is not easy for some, yet it is the most beautiful and divine path.
