Patanjali: About Sradha
Śraddhā, or confidence, is the essential foundation for spiritual practice and realization.
Without śraddhā, all is lost. This confidence sustains practice and prevents the mind from becoming disturbed by anger and laziness. A practitioner's love for their practice must increase daily. A lack of confidence is the sole cause for delayed realization. A story illustrates this: a man was cured of illness by an extreme dose of an herb, which gave him unwavering faith. He later instructed others facing problems to take the same herb with absolute confidence. A farmer's wife obeyed to find a lost donkey, and through a coincidence, the donkey was discovered. A neglected queen obeyed to win her king's love, and through a separate chain of events, she succeeded. An army, following the instruction, created an illusion of great numbers and caused an enemy to retreat. The outcomes were attributed not to the herb's direct action, but to the power of śraddhā itself.
"If śraddhā is lost, everything is lost."
"Have confidence, and I wish you a good appetite."
