The Glory of Satsaṅga

The glory of satsaṅga elevates one's spiritual value through harmonious association. Ordinary wood gains the fragrance of sandalwood by being near it, and street water becomes holy by joining the Gaṅgā. When water mixes with milk, the water's value rises to match the milk's price. Similarly, whoever joins good companionship sees their own worth rise. Satsaṅga is not merely a large gathering; it can be with one or two persons or cultivated within one's own thinking, where one learns good thoughts and qualities. However, introducing a sour element—representing bad company or negative talk—spoils the milk, causing separation and loss of quality. Such influence, whether from others or one's own thinking, destroys one's purity. Therefore, one must pray for satsaṅga and to be kept away from harmful associations, preserving the divine, mother-like quality of spiritual life.

"Whoever goes to satsaṅga, whoever is in harmony with unity, sees their spiritual value rise."

"O Mahāprabhu, listen to my prayer. Please grant me the satsaṅga and keep away from me the kusaṅgas."

Tulsīdharajī offers a very beautiful example for us to learn in life, which I mentioned earlier. We also know from Mahāprabhujī’s bhajans, such as sobhā-satsaṅgī—"what a glory of the satsaṅgī"—where ordinary wood can become nearly like sandalwood, and street water becomes holy when it joins the satsaṅga of the Gaṅgā. Similarly, when milk and water come together, they become one. Who becomes one with the other? We will discuss this later; it is very interesting. But it is said that when water becomes one with milk, the price of the water rises. Consider those who sell milk and add a little water—twenty liters of milk with two liters of water; you hardly notice. Yet the price of those two liters of water becomes the same as the price of the milk. In the same way, whoever goes to satsaṅga, whoever is in harmony with unity, sees their spiritual value rise. That is satsaṅga. That is satsaṅga—good companionship. Satsaṅga does not mean only a large gathering; it can be with just one or two persons, or you can create satsaṅga with your own thinking. In satsaṅga, you always learn good thoughts and good qualities, which will help you. At the same time, Tulsīdāsajī said that instead of adding water to milk, or when milk and water mix and become one, what harmony, what oneness exists between them. But if someone introduces a sour element, what happens? That sour thing divides them again. It spoils the milk. The milk becomes spoiled on one side, turning into something like quark or cheese, while the water separates on the other side. The milk even loses its quality. Thus, kusaṅga damages both sides, separates them, and spoils the quality. It can be just one person. There are people who like to talk. Do you know this? Have you had this experience? Have you heard about it? Someone told me, "Do you know how that person is? He is so terrible." This kind of thinking, or listening to such words from others, has destroyed your milk, spoiled your milk. Therefore, it is said: "O Mahāprabhu, listen to my prayer. Please grant me the satsaṅga and keep away from me the kusaṅgas." Then this person is as described: so pure and nice, praised like mother's milk—very original, spiritual. Milk is divine. Where there is milk, there is a question of life. Where there is milk, there is mother. Only a mother can give milk. If there is a mother's love, then milk comes. And when you introduce kusaṅgas—the sourness of kusaṅga—it divides; otherwise, even water can become one with the milk.
