Wishes, part 2

The human mind's power makes every thought a potential reality, including fears. Therefore, ultimate freedom lies in liberation from all wishes. Before wishing, one must purify the motivation, ensuring it is not born of greed, selfishness, or ego. This purification of desires is the core practice. Since wishes persist, a technique is offered: ensure your wish is positive, harming no one and causing no future regret. The process involves three elements: yourself as the source, the specific aim or object, and the wish itself directed as thought. For mental power, physical distance is irrelevant; thought instantly bridges any gap.

"Lord, make me free from all wishes."

"Your wishes should be positive. Take care that through your wish you do not hurt someone."

Ambition is our problem. The human mind is a powerful force. Whatever you wish for and whatever you decide will happen. Each and every thought will, sooner or later, come true. This includes thoughts born from fear—things you are afraid might happen to you at any time. Therefore, it is said, "Lord, make me free from all wishes." That is the ultimate point. Before we wish for something, we should know what we want to achieve with it. We must examine our motivation: Is it greediness, selfishness, or ego? Which part of your being are you trying to fulfill? Greediness is not good. Acting out of ego is not good. Acting out of selfishness is also not good. This is why it is said in yoga: try to purify all your vṛttis. Vṛttis means wishes. This is the best practice. Now, the second point about wishes. Since you still wish to have your wishes fulfilled, I will tell you a technique—first theoretical, and then we will practice accordingly. First of all, your wishes should be positive. Take care that through your wish you do not hurt someone, harm someone, or take away from someone. Ensure that afterward, you will not feel sorry for it. For example, yesterday someone said, "I wish good health for my daughter." This is a good wish. It can be for your daughter or son, your husband or wife, your grandfather or grandmother, or anyone. Let us take this as one concrete case, a concrete object. Or you may have another wish: you want to attain liberation. That is a very concrete aim. There are also wishes like wanting to be successful in your company, and so on. Now, there are three very important elements. The first is yourself. Everything will happen through yourself. It is you who will do it; it is your power which will make it happen. But you know, it is not as easy as I am telling you. So, the first element is yourself. The second is the object, the aim. Let us say the object is your daughter, who is ill. Here you are. The third element is your wish. This wish goes out from you towards her. You imagine your daughter. Distance does not matter. She could be in Australia, and we are here. If we dig a hole straight down here, we reach Australia. In Australia, there is a city called Adelaide. When you dig toward Adelaide, you reach the Austrian-Slovenian corner—I once saw a postcard there. Anyway, distance does not matter. For mental power, for your willpower, distance does not matter at all. The object could be on another planet or a faraway star. The distance can be covered so quickly that it is just like thinking of Jupiter, Mars, and Earth. You can be on all three planets at once. As quickly as you think, you are already there. So distance does not matter. You see that person who is suffering, and you send your thoughts. That is your wish, and that wish, in the form of thoughts, is that she will become healthy.
