Ahar, Vihar, Acar, Vicar

A discourse on the essence and prerequisites of spiritual practice (sādhanā).

"A life without the capacity for sādhanā is senseless. Before beginning, one must have a clear vision and dṛḍha-saṅkalpa—a very strong resolution."

"Āhāra influences our life; our life depends on it. Therefore, a human should have sāttvic, śuddha-sāttvic, vegetarian nourishment."

The speaker outlines the foundational principles for sādhanā, emphasizing the necessity of a firm, unchanging resolution. He then explains the first of four conscious practices, āhāra (diet), arguing that true human nourishment should be pure, sattvic, and vegetarian because humans are distinct from the animal kingdom. The talk also touches on faith in divine provision and the influence of thought.

Sādhanā is life. A life without the capacity for sādhanā is senseless. There are many kinds of sādhanā, but before beginning, one must have a clear vision and dṛḍha-saṅkalpa—a very strong resolution. That saṅkalpa, once made, should not be changed. If you change your resolution, neither the saṅkalpa nor you will be successful. At the same time, one should not force the immediate realization of that saṅkalpa. Time is very important; we must give it time. A ṛṣi gives instructions to disciples, and these instructions are for everyone. They concern four things we must do consciously: āhāra, vihāra, ācāra, and vicāra. Āhāra is diet. There are different kinds, and everyone is free to eat as they wish. However, one must know that whatever we eat greatly influences our body, mind, emotions, consciousness, sādhanā, and even our soul, if you believe in it. God has created different kinds of nourishment for all creatures on this planet. From the smallest ant to the largest elephant, everyone needs nourishment and has their own kind. The greatness of God is that no one goes to sleep hungry; everyone finds the food they need. So, He who gave the peak will give the food. A human should not worry about this, yet humans are the most worrying beings on the planet because they lack sufficient śraddhā, confidence in God. If He gave life, He will give the food. He is the creator and the one who feeds everyone. Every creature and every plant finds its nourishment. It is said that life eats life. Every animal eats another animal, but here another question arises. We always talk about humans separately from other creatures; we do not say humans belong to the animal kingdom. We always separate humans. But when it comes to eating, then they say "life eats life," and there they forget the human. So, if we are human, then a human does not eat other life. Therefore, a human should have sāttvic, śuddha-sāttvic, vegetarian nourishment. That is why people should have a sāttvic, vegetarian diet. Āhāra influences our life; our life depends on it. Breathing is also our āhāra. There is solid nourishment, liquid nourishment, and oxygenation nourishment. Society is a nourishment; there is mental nourishment. Thinking is nourishment. Mano mātra jagatahā—as you think, so you will feel. If you feel angry, you think angry thoughts. If you are sad, it is because you think sad things. Certainly, every thought has its cause. Some things directly concern our individual life, and some do not. Recording location: Czech Republic, Strilky, Summer seminar
