Family relations

A spiritual discourse on foundational life principles, responsibility, and debt.

"We must return to family relations, build a healthy family system, and give good education to children. Children should know their responsibility."

"Humans are born as protectors, not as distractors. Protection means not only physical protection but all different kinds of protection."

Swami Chidanand Saraswati (Pujya Swamiji) offers instructions on the critical need for ethical education rooted in family and responsibility. He analyzes global problems as stemming from a flawed foundational education, advocating for a return to Vedic and gurukul principles. He explains the concept of life as protection and elaborates on the five fundamental debts (ṛṇa), beginning with the lifelong debt to one's mother.

I would like to offer some instructions today. These are very important things to know in life. We have spoken before, but I can perhaps elaborate a little more. We all know the world is going through a critical situation. It is a question mark—what will happen in the future? Where will humankind arrive? If the current mode of education continues, it will be a great mistake and a future problem. We must return to family relations, build a healthy family system, and give good education to children. Children should know their responsibility. To give responsibility to children, we must also have responsibility towards them and towards others. There should be ethical and moral principles in this. Teaching should always begin from the home, from father and mother. The things happening in the world are not appreciable: terrorism, drugs, family breakups, criminalities, and many other issues. Why does this happen? What do those who do such things think when they are doing it? That is very important. If they would think and know what they are doing, they would not do it. But they are not able to think, and therefore they do not know what they are really doing. This kind of thinking and education is missing from the beginning onward. The basic principle is missing; the foundation is wrong. You know, old buildings have problems because of humidity. There are beautiful, big, strong buildings, but the ground floors are very wet because the foundation is different. Therefore, we must come back to the ṛṣi education, the gurukul education, the Vedic education. In this, one thing is very important to be aware of: whatever you are doing, it reflects on others. It has an impact on others as well. Do you care about your mother? Do you care about your father? Do you care about your parents, brothers, sisters, relatives, teachers, country, society, the world where you are living, your master, and yourself? If you care about them, then living in this world is most beautiful. We should know that the world needs you more than you need the world. That is the first thing. Therefore, life is very precious. This life should be protected in order to protect the life of others. Humans are born as protectors, not as distractors. Protection means not only physical protection but all different kinds of protection. It is said that every individual, every human, has five kinds of debt to be paid back. That debt is not money, not material, but different kinds of debt. You know, sometimes someone is waiting for you to say thank you. Sometimes a wife is so offended by her husband. After 45 years of marriage, she tells him, "Yes, but I'm still waiting. You didn't say thank you to me, or you didn't excuse yourself. You have to pay this back." So you will say, "Oh, I'm sorry, I forgot, and I thank you." That person is released psychologically. The depression that person had for a lifetime, 45 years, is just released with one sentence: "Thank you, excuse me." To say thank you or to say excuse me, you lose nothing. But you gain love. You gain happiness, harmony, understanding, and forgiveness. That is only gaining, gaining, gaining. Likewise, there are five kinds of what is called ṛṇa, a debt. Mātṛ ṛṇa is the first debt, towards your mother. We have to pay this lifelong, not only with money but in different ways: help physically, mentally, socially, emotionally—in every aspect. You see, in one life you get only one mother and only one father. You may have stepmothers, adopted mothers. Each is our mother, and you can worship all women as mothers. All are like our fathers. But to say that your physical mother and father is only one. Your mother and father you can find in every life, but a Gurū you can find only in one human life.
