Understanding

The transmission of truth is hindered by the disciple's capacity to understand.

A master's answer is perfect, drawn from authentic scriptures known as Śruti and Smṛti. Memory, or Smṛti, involves a process where understanding is lost. The ideal source is a Brahmaniṣṭha Śrotriya, a self-realized seer who speaks reality from experience. What the ṛṣis declared is authentic. Yet, the disciple's grasp is the problem. Essence is lost unintentionally in transmission, like butter diminishing as it passes through many hands. Grammatical understanding is not enough; grasping the essence requires a purified inner instrument over many years.

"What the Brahmaniṣṭha Śrotriya speaks, out of their experiences or memories, must be the reality."

"To understand ṛṣi vākya, guru vākya, is many, many years’ work."

After the disciple asks the question, the Master answers. The Master answers very clearly. But the question is this: does the disciple understand clearly? Many times we do not understand, and that is a problem. Different people understand different things. So there is Śruti and Smṛti. All Indian texts, or I would say all holy books, are based on Śruti and Smṛti. Smṛti means memory. What we remember, what we recall, is Smṛti. There is a big gap: to understand, then to put into memory, and again to remember from the memory and then to speak—it is lost. But those Srotriya, that’s called brahmaniṣṭha śrotriya. The Smṛti and Śruti are according to the brahmaniṣṭha śrotriya. Brahmaniṣṭha means the knower of Brahman. That’s called self-realized, one without second. Trikāla darśī, the seer of all three times: past, present, and future. That past, present, and future, who can see or know, is called trikāla darśī. And that Trikāldarśī is a Brahmaniṣṭha, and who can speak about this is known as a Śrotriya. And so, that we call Brahmaniṣṭha Śrotriya. Now, what the Brahmaniṣṭha Śrotriya speaks, out of their experiences or memories, must be the reality. So the ṛṣis were known as the great seers. The ṛṣis were known as the hermits who were living in the forests, in the huts, and were the great seers. So, Śruti and Smṛti, these are authentic, which we are getting as these scriptures. The authentic scriptures we are getting are known as Smṛtis and Śrutis. Therefore, what the Master will answer is a perfect answer. But the question is if the disciple understands, and there is the problem. And so, many things are lost until they come to the right place. There is a lot lost without intention. There is one kilo of butter without any packaging. It is frozen butter. And there are about 20–30 people standing. So the butter has to be brought into the kitchen, which is 500 meters away. It is not very far, so there is a chain of people. You take the butter as it is, and you give it further. So when the butter goes through the hands of 30–40 people, and when it comes into the kitchen, it’s not exactly one kilo. It’s 995 grams only. Five grams are lost. So from the kitchen, ask, please, who ate the butter? Or, who took the butter away? They were all angry. "We are so honest. We didn’t take butter away." But naturally, that butter remained on their hands. So, like this, what you listen from me, for example, and what you will understand, and how you will register in your memory, and then how you will put it out again, there will be a lot lost. According to language, everyone can read the Upaniṣad perfectly. You will understand what this word or sentence means. Grammatically, you know very well, but to grasp that essence of it is not possible for all of us. It’s only a Brahmaniṣṭha Śrotriya who can tell. And in their words, there is authentic power. There is reality, so reality is different. So many people are giving some kind of talk about some country, and when some countryman is there, he says, "Well, actually, it’s not like that, what you told. It’s different." So now, the ṛṣi is answering. He is answering very perfectly, but if the disciple is understanding or not, that is the question. And to understand ṛṣi vākya, guru vākya, is many, many years’ work. And first, this is very important: that your antaḥkaraṇa should be purified.
