Ekadasi
Ekādaśī is a day of fasting and spiritual practice. It is the eleventh lunar day dedicated to worship. People fast, some strictly without liquids, to cultivate willpower and purify the inner instrument. This strengthens one's resolve. It is a spiritual practice, a sādhanā, where we offer something to achieve our wishes. Actions begun on this day become successful. Sādhanā is life itself; only through disciplined practice can we succeed. This includes rituals, prayer, and austerity. Life on this mortal world is a field for action. We are here to perform the correct sādhanā and lead an ascetic life. The first step of asceticism is to renounce all ego, remaining balanced in honor and dishonor.
"Whenever there is thirst or hunger, you know why you are fasting. This strengthens our saṅkalpa-śakti."
"māna apamāna—that those who have balance in both name and fame... it should not matter anything to you; then the first step of the ascetic life is there."
