Renounce and enjoy

A spiritual discourse on the principle of renunciation (tyāga) for liberation.

"As Holy Gurujī said, 'Enter the kingdom of the Lord through the gate of sacrifice'—tyāga."

"It is said this life is like morning water on the grass; very soon it will dry."

The speaker explores the necessity of renunciation in thought, feeling, and action as the path to true enjoyment and freedom. He explains the concepts of tapa (endurance) and tyāga (sacrifice), linking them to spiritual practice and the sharing of prasād (blessed food). The talk emphasizes the preciousness and brevity of human life, concluding with a prayer for blessings and a vow for dedicated practice in the new year.

We must work to renounce, renounce, and enjoy. Gandhi said, "Renounce and enjoy." If you wish to enjoy your life, then renounce. And this renunciation is not only physical but also in feelings. The more you try to renounce, it will come back to you. As Holy Gurujī said, "Enter the kingdom of the Lord through the gate of sacrifice"—tyāga. Tapa, tyāga, dhyāna—these three are very important. Tapa is the ability to endure, to go through. Tyāga is to renounce for the sake of your life, for the sake of your liberation, for the sake of our freedom. It will never happen in this system of creation, which God began perhaps some billions of years ago, that we will be free from pain and ignorance until He completely inhales and perhaps a new system is created. Until that time, we are not free from going through pain and ignorance. For that, we have to renounce. It is not merely that I renounce so that she will have something—though that is also very good. Love your neighbor and share your bread with everyone. It is said the greatest yajña is jñāna yajña, and the second greatest yajña is anya yajña—to give food, to share with all. That system of "share with all" has become the prasād. Prasād means blessing, and so it should be shared. At the last dinner, Jesus was also sharing his bread. What was that? Prasād. Prasād was given. What you now receive in the church, what you call the body of Christ, is not that kind of body you think it is. It is the prasād blessed by him. They do not say it is prasād; they say it is the body of Jesus. It is better we should say prasād, because the blessed one, everybody is blessed as energy. So tyāga, of course, we should practice for others. It is better I suffer myself, but I do not want others to suffer. That is it. But if another is suffering because of me, then I will do what I can. Of course, you cannot cut your neck and throw it away because someone wants you to die. But if it must or should be, then let it die. That is it. Ignorance is suffering; we are not able to renounce or be free. So there are many things for us to renounce, many things from which to be free. Therefore, this human life is called amūlya ratna—a jewel or a precious stone which you cannot price. Amūlya ratna. You cannot borrow it to someone, and you cannot buy it anywhere—this body. You cannot say to somebody, "Okay, you take my body," no. If your body is very ill and painful, you cannot go to the market and buy a new body and jump into it. It is the chance, only the chance, and therefore we should know what it means for us to be human. It will not come again and again. It is said this life is like morning water on the grass; very soon it will dry. It is like water in the hand; it will drip quickly. So we did many things this year, good and bad. We offer it all to Mahāprabhujī, to Satgurū Dev, and take a new vow and practice throughout the year. And I pray to him that he shall bless us. --- Recording location: Czech Republic, Strilky, Summer seminar
