There is no better life than the human life. It represents the highest point in the evolution of consciousness. However, if a human becomes careless and fails to develop their intellect toward the positive or the divine, they will fall down again into lower forms of life. It depends entirely on how you have trained your intellect; a human can act like a devil. A human can act with great cruelty. It depends on what kind of training one has received and what qualities one has developed. Through criminal activities, a human becomes known as a criminal. Through the activities of stealing, one is called a thief; through the activities of murdering, one is called a murderer. And through divine activities, one becomes divine. It depends on you, individually, what you would like to be. The person is the same; we are all people. We share the same anatomy, but we have different qualities and different habits. That is what makes us individuals. Therefore, your life is in your hands. Your liberation is in your hands. How will you develop? Try to avoid those circumstances where your qualities develop negatively. Seek out those societies and circumstances where you learn something good and where you can develop your good, pure, divine qualities. Ultimately, we are here. Every individual has a different direction, different circumstances and past, and different experiences in life. Only you can decide what you want to do. In human life, our actions (karmas) carry weight. Human life means living under karmic consequence. Whatever animals do, they do only through their natural instincts. Animals are not creatures that can speak. They cannot express their feelings; they are dependent. We can talk, we can speak. It is said that when you were born, God gave you two paths, and you are free to choose. This freedom is called upavarga. You are free. And precisely because you have this freedom, whatever you do will be counted. Nothing will be lost—neither good things nor negative and cruel things. There is no neutral step. Life becomes either very positive and very good for a person, or it becomes very critical and miserable. God gave humanity something else: a powerful instrument. Therefore it is said, "Manomātra jagataḥ"—this world is created out of the mind. One world is created out of the cosmic consciousness, and my personal world is created. Your world, where you live, is created out of your own mind. In one house, five family members may live, yet all of them have their own world. Some are happy and relaxed; others are very miserable and suffering—physically, emotionally, socially, in different ways. How is it possible that five people living in the same house have five completely different situations in life? This tells us that every situation in our life is created from our own mind. If you think you are happy, you are. If you think you are unhappy, that no one loves you, that you are lonely, that people are terrible and unpleasant, that nothing goes well and whatever you do ends in failure—this is your problem. And you will be like that; you will feel like that. You may have a thousand problems, but if your mind tells you, "Don't worry, get up, do good things," then a thousand problems will reduce to ten.
