Sweetness of God's Name

An evening interfaith prayer gathering and discourse on divine love and world peace.

"God has given it to us free of charge. Be assured that our prayers are registered by God."

"Gandhi said there is no way to peace; peace is the way... 'Be the change you want to see.'"

A spiritual leader opens with a Sanskrit peace invocation and welcomes the large, diverse crowd. He speaks on the indescribable sweetness of God's name and love, using the example of incarnations and saints. The talk then focuses on the imperative for world peace, citing a recent Vienna conference and Mahatma Gandhi's teachings, analyzing the roots of conflict in greed and ignorance, and emphasizing the need for inner change and cultural education for the youth.

Oṃ manasukhadam kevalam itam gaganasadṛśyam smasyādilakṣyam ekam nityam vimalāchalam sarvaddhisākṣibhūtam bhavatītam triguṇarahitam satgurutam namāmyaṁ sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ. Sarve santu nirāmayāḥ, sarve bhadrāṇi paśyantu, mā kaśchid duḥkhabhāg bhavet, Oṃ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ śāntiḥ. Salutations to the Cosmic Light, the Lord of our hearts, omniscient and omnipresent. In His divine presence, my dear brothers and sisters, a very good evening to you. The day began with a beautiful constellation. Bhagavān Bhāskara, Sūrya, the sun, rose with millions of bright lights and radiance, illuminating the entire world and our consciousness. That illumination brought us together today. What a beautiful thing has happened. This evening is a glorious evening, that we, in such large numbers, have gathered here in front of the culture house and remembered God in our own languages with different names. The love of God is indescribable. The beauty of His divinity is indescribable, and God has given it to us free of charge. Be assured that our prayers are registered by God. He listened to them very carefully. In these prayers, one of our brothers said one sentence: "Madhuram." Madhu means honey. Madhu means the sweet. Madhuram means the sweetest of the sweet. That is the sweet love of God. He is in the beauty of His creation. In His name, there is a sweetness—a sweetness which our tongue still does not know. When we taste that sweetness, all other worldly sweets will be nothing. One saint said: if there is sweet, then it should be a sweetness that makes us immortal and removes our mind from desires. If there is something sour, then it should be a sourness like that which spoils milk, meaning it removes our senses from selfish desires and blesses us with immortality. That is the name of God. What is very interesting is that it costs us no money to speak the name of God. You can say Allāh, you can say Holy Father, you can say Kṛṣṇa, you can say Mahāprabhujī, you can say Buddha, and you can say any saint's name. It is said God incarnates from time to time in different forms, and He incarnates in the forms of saints. You know who Rāma was? A householder, married, with children. But He was an incarnation. The difference between incarnation and birth is like this example: there is a prison. Two men are in the prison now. One is a worker who is working in the prison, and one is a guilty prisoner. Both are in the same room, under the same ceiling, roof, in the same prison. People who see from outside say, "Oh, there are two in the prison." But the reality is different. One came into the prison as a guilty prisoner, and one came into the prison of his own free will to serve, to help, to work. But people who do not know the reality think both are in the prison. Similarly, holy saints are the incarnation of His divinity, but we do not know them. And that is wrong. The message was read by our sister from St. Matthew, saying that wars were created in order to have power. We are learning only to take; we are not learning to give. And now is the time to create this again. Recently, we had a world peace conference in Vienna. The subject of this international conference was world peace and the message of Mahātmā Gandhi. Gandhi said there is no way to peace; peace is the way. Our world is threatened by war, fighting, terrorism, violence, and racism. Torturing animals, environmental pollution, shortage of drinking water, social and religious discrimination, as well as recent civil conflicts, wars, and terrorist events—all these have made humans frightened. Humans feel lost in a world without peace. But Gandhijī said, "Be the change you want to see." Now we are sitting here, and we had a peace prayer. We had songs, and we all wished for something. What do we want? Gandhijī said, "Be the change you want to see." We want to see peace. We want to see happiness. We want to see a happy world; then we have to change. We have to awaken the compassion in our hearts. We have to change ourselves inwardly, and we have to limit our needs. Therefore, Gandhi says again, "Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs." Mother Earth provides enough to satisfy every man's needs, but not every man's greed. When there is greed in this world, then there are wars. There are different kinds of greed: individual, sensual greed, then the ego, to have property, power, my religion. Religious people are involved in this kind of greed: my religion, my religion. Kings, my territory, my land. So you know why wars are there? Because there is greed. But we know that God exists in everyone. Yes, God exists in everyone. Every living creature represents the light of God. So Gandhi said again, if God resides in every heart, who dares to hate whom? That is something very important and a very great thing that we have to realize. Such conferences are needed in the world. That is very, very important. We had this conference in Vienna, Austria, with people from forty-five different countries taking part and eight different religions participating. It was very successful. Therefore, this evening was dedicated to world peace. Our prayers, God will definitely listen. God is definitely with us. And I am very happy that you are here. Now, our second subject: our subject is youth, our children. It is said that a country will go in that direction in which the children are going. Children are the culture of tomorrow. What do children need? Children need love. Children need education. Recently, I was attending a conference; I was invited to the Council of Europe. There were about 150 people; most of them were religious people, because now even Central Europe has realized this: that without religious harmony and accepting other cultures, we cannot achieve peace. There, one was talking about a very interesting thing. Why are wars going on, and why don't we accept other cultures? Because we are in ignorance. We have no knowledge, and since there is fear—where there is fear, there is aggressivity. And if you cannot express your aggression, then you fall into depression, and that depression will create in you hate, and again the conflicts will come. It doesn't matter even if you are a student of a university, an academic; you may be a professor of some language, but still there is ignorance. That ignorance is about other cultures. And as long as we will not accept other cultures, harmony and peace will not be there. So this ignorance means that our children do not know about different cultures. Got it.
