Peace

A spiritual discourse on the nature and cultivation of peace (śānti).

"Where there is harmony, balance, and happiness, there is peace." "If there is śānti in our environment, then we will have that śānti in our heart too."

A spiritual teacher explores the source of peace, explaining its dependence on harmony within oneself, one's home, and the wider world. He uses the analogy of Slovenia's interconnectedness to illustrate universal interdependence, cites Vedic prayers for peace, and leads the audience in a chanting meditation of "Oṃ Śānti" to experientially cultivate inner tranquility.

Recording location: Slovenia, Ljubljana, Seminar

Where there is peace, where is that peace? Where there is harmony, balance, and happiness, there is peace. If our body is ill and there is pain somewhere, we have no śānti. If someone in our house is unhappy, we have no more śānti. If our dog or cat is restless, we have no more śānti. So on what does our śānti depend? And if there is śānti in our environment, then we will have that śānti in our heart too. First of all, Oṃ Dho Śānti Rantarikṣam. The first prayer is, "Merciful Lord, maintain the peace in the universe, in the space." The first prayer is, "Merciful God, please, maintain peace in the whole world and cosmos." We exist and live on this one beautiful planet. But this planet is not an independent planet. It is not independent; it has different kinds of influences from other planets. Slovenia is a peaceful, beautiful, independent country. But it still has to maintain and is subject to influences from other countries. It maintains good relations with them. If there are wars all over the world, do you think Slovenia will be peaceful? No. And if the whole world is peaceful, Slovenia will also be peaceful. You need not be afraid. So the system that is in the universe is also present on this earth. Lord, bless our entire universe with peace in the atmosphere, in the whole universe, all planets, all visible and invisible elements and the principles in this universe. So there should be peace. Oṃ Dhyo Śānti Rantarikṣam Śānti Pṛthvī Śānti Rapa Śānti. And Lord, Merciful Lord, peace should be on this earth. In the Vedas, which we have written for more than 8,000 years perhaps, it is said, "Peace on the earth." At that time, maybe here in this part of the world there was ice. Śānti, śānti. I would like to make one experiment. We all chant three times, "Śānti, śānti," and feel how you feel during this chanting. Close your eyes. Don't be in a hurry, and chant with me. First I will demonstrate how, and then you join me. But try to feel that vibration which creates peace in your whole individual phenomenon. You will feel towards your brain, in your head, that kind of tension is releasing. If you have a problem with your heart, you will feel that your heart is getting relaxed; there is no more pressure on it. And if you have some problem with the stomach, or a cramp, you will feel it will be released. Feel this vibration. It will be chanted like this: "Oṃ Śānti." If you have any difficulties in life, or you have to take some very important decisions, you sit for meditation for a few minutes and you chant this "Oṃ Śānti" a few times or for a few minutes. You will feel that you have peace in your heart. --- Recording location: Slovenia, Ljubljana, Seminar
