Love removes fear

A spiritual discourse on the purpose of the human body and cultivating compassion.

"God has given us this human form to help others, to protect others, and to show them the way to God through love."

"If we utilize these qualities, our life becomes free from fear. Otherwise, even while inhabiting a human body, a person lives in constant fear, anxiety, restlessness, and uncertainty."

The speaker expounds on the sacred opportunity of human life, using the metaphor of the ocean to describe the mind's surface disturbances and deep inner peace. He explains that by utilizing innate human qualities and practicing genuine love—defined as holding good wishes for all—one can eradicate inner fear and fulfill the divine purpose of service and protection.

The great saint Tulsidās said: "Baḍā bhāga manuṣa tanu pāvā"—we are the fortunate ones to have obtained a human body. God has given us this human form to help others, to protect others, and to show them the way to God through love. To do this, we must awaken compassion. For this purpose, God has endowed us with many noble qualities, known as human qualities. The human heart is like an ocean—an endless ocean that always remains equal. Much water leaves the ocean as vapour to form clouds, and many rivers flow back into it, yet the ocean's level remains constant. On the surface, the ocean has waves, but at its depths, it is profoundly calm and peaceful. Similarly, on the surface of our minds, we have worldly thoughts and petty emotions, but within our heart, we can realize that inherent calmness and peace. This inner tranquility can only arise through the practice of our human qualities, which God has given us to utilize. If we utilize these qualities, our life becomes free from fear. Otherwise, even while inhabiting a human body, a person lives in constant fear, anxiety, restlessness, and uncertainty. Our being has two aspects: the real and the unreal. In the real aspect, we must cultivate love. When we think positively and wish well for others, why should we be afraid? Love does not merely mean giving a hug; it means holding thoughts of good wishes for all. "Sarve bhavantu sukhinaḥ"—may all be happy. May my neighbour be happy and prosperous. May my society and my country be happy and prosperous. May my whole world be happy. What can I contribute from my side to make them happy? If you cannot dry the tears of others, you should at least not be the cause of them. When we practice this kind of love, the indescribable fear we carry inside will vanish. --- Recording location: New Zealand, Wellington, World Peace Tour
