World Peace Forum 2003 - Rabbi Awraham Soetendorp
We stand at a critical time in history when humanity must choose its future. The choice is between forming a global partnership to care for Earth or risking destruction. Every person carries two truths: "You are only dust and ashes" and "For you alone, the whole world has been created." We must balance humility and responsibility to become co-partners in creation. Our task is to retrieve the scattered divine light through deeds of justice, kindness, and compassion. Millions of deprived children look to us; we must decide whether to open or close the door. War against want must strengthen our resolve. A practical proposal is for the relatively wealthy billion people and their countries to give an extra one-thousandth of income or GNP yearly to meet universal goals by 2015. Personal encounters, like with an angry Palestinian woman, teach that we must walk together despite pain. The struggle is often between right and right. We must hold hands to overcome hatred. We are in a day of opportunity. A human being cannot live one moment without hope. Future generations will look back at our actions now.
"For you alone, the whole world has been created."
"You cannot give a hand to someone with a clenched fist."
