World Peace Forum 2003 - Mayor M
Peace is built through local action in the face of global conflict. Conflict is part of the human condition; our response defines us. We must start with ourselves, in our communities. Global images of war can feel overwhelming, causing some to withdraw temporarily to reflect, not to abandon their principles. People continue to discuss and seek positive ways forward. Leadership often fails, with conviction sometimes leading to arrogance and wrong directions. Therefore, the global peace movement relies on local organizing. Small, collective actions form a powerful people's movement. Technology connects us globally, strengthening this effort. Courage is needed to begin, but action builds unity and strength. Simple acts—displaying a sign, joining a group, sharing a meal, or donating—set examples. Individual actions collectively create significant change.
"Little actions set examples and together grow to be big actions. Never underestimate the power of individual action."
"When they came for the communists, I wasn't a communist, so I did nothing... So when they came for me, there was nobody left."
