World Peace Forum 2003 - Lama Choedak Rinpoche
Peace is an active inner and outer practice, not merely the absence of conflict. It begins within by freeing the mind from afflictions like greed and hatred, replacing them with love and compassion. Our intrinsic nature is kindness, but we easily become confused by desires for control, breeding tension and anger. Peace is a proactive calming of one's own aggression and showing compassion without blame. The world manifests according to our attitudes; changing our perception changes our external reality. We must emulate the peaceful, giving qualities of the natural elements—earth, water, fire, air, and space—with which we are constantly in touch.
"Peace is not merely the absence of conflict. It is the active search for and implementation of ways to resolve conflict through dialogue and mutual respect."
"The intrinsic nature of all living beings is kindness, peace, and goodness. But when we are unable to sustain this awareness, our mind becomes effortlessly afflicted."
