Take it as it is

A spiritual talk on finding contentment within marriage and family life.

"O Nānak, the whole world is unhappy. I climbed on my house roof and looked, and every house is like this."

"So stay with your children, with your wife, with your husband, happily as it is. Take it as it is. Do not begin new problems."

The speaker, addressing an audience, counsels perseverance in marriage despite inevitable conflicts. He shares the story of Guru Nānak observing domestic quarrels from his rooftop to illustrate universal relationship struggles. Advising against seeking new relationships, he encourages accepting one's partner, understanding that the mind often creates problems, and striving to be a harmonious family.

Stay with your wife. If you have been with your wife for thirty years, you must stay with her. Everyone has problems in their relationships. The great saint Nānaka, Nānak Sāhib, also had a problem. Not like yours, but a different one—quarreling. He became fed up and went onto the roof of his house. He saw that everybody was quarreling, in every house. Every lady was telling her husband something: "You are so bad, and you are this girl. You didn't bring chili home. You didn't bring the wood for cooking." She said, "There is no water for drinking. Go and bring water. What are you doing? It is my bad karma that I got a stupid man like you." Inside the house, every lady is the poor man, you know. Then Nānak Sāhib said, "Nānaka dukhya sab sansār. O Nānak, the whole world is unhappy. Chad kothi deka gargar yehi hal. I climbed on my house roof and looked, and every house is like this." So, remain where you are. Be happy with your husband, with your wife. Even if she is angry with you, or he is angry with you, be sure in your heart that he or she loves you. And these new flames that come between you are not worthwhile. They are only like a little ketchup, and you should know that ketchup is not so healthy. With ketchup you cannot fill the stomach. So stay with your children, with your wife, with your husband, happily as it is. Take it as it is. Do not begin new problems. No more finished, no more relations. Is everybody happy with their wife? Are you happy with your wife? Yes? But you are saying there is a big ... okay, very nice. So it is we who create the problem; our mind is creating problems. So try to show me that you are the best disciple and the best family. We are always talking harmony, harmony, but where is the harmony? We have only harmony, so show me that you are happy couples or happy single ones. Try a little bit harder to understand your partner. I wish you all the best. Siddhīp Nārāyaṇ Bhagvān.
