OM

A spiritual discourse on the cosmic significance of the sacred syllable Oṃ.

"Oṃ is the beginning of everything. Everything in this universe that you can see is created out of that one sound, and that is Oṃ."

"Where is there no sound? Everywhere is sound. So where is there no God? Everywhere is God."

The speaker expounds on the philosophy that Oṃ is the fundamental vibration and language of Brahman, permeating all creation from the cosmos to the human body. He describes it as the sound heard in deep meditation and samādhi, accessible after purifying the mind of Mala, Vikṣepa, and Āvaraṇa, which separate individual consciousness from the cosmic.

Oṃ is the beginning of everything. Everything in this universe that you can see is created out of that one sound, and that is Oṃ. Oṃ is the language of Brahman; Oṃ itself presents Brahman. The most powerful mantra is Oṃ. All these birds, what they are speaking, is Oṃ. What is whispering in the wind is Oṃ. When you sit near flowing water, in the flute—everywhere. The entire universe is filled with resonance. If you go far into the sky, several thousand kilometers high, where the earth is no longer visible, and then you listen to the sound, there is an indescribable resonance there. That is called the sound resonance of God's heart. It is like a circulation; we have our blood circulation, and we also have the sound. Everything fills our body with sound. The heart has its sound. The kidneys have their sound; the liver has its functional sound. Digestion has its sound. What has no sound? Every little atom of our body is filled with resonance. So everything is sound; that Parabrahma is only sound. Therefore, when you come to meditation and travel endlessly in space, and when you attain that samādhi, at that time you will hear this sound. Before that, there are ten sounds in the body from the ten indriyas, and above that, the eleventh one: the sound of the Self, that Oṃ. Everything comes out of Oṃ; every language comes out of Oṃ. And so it is everywhere: in the clouds, thundering, is Oṃ. If you listen to the earth when everything is very peaceful, and you put your ear to the earth, you will hear the sound. It is a beautiful sound. When you put your ear to a tree trunk, you will hear the sound. When you listen to a conch, you will hear the sound of the ocean. When you sit one kilometer away, you can listen to the sound of the ocean. And when you dive deep into the water, you will hear the sound inside. So where is there no sound? Everywhere is sound. So where is there no God? Everywhere is God. That omniscient, omnipresent Brahman within you, within me, and within all—everywhere we see, what we touch, what we smell, what we taste, and what we see—His presence is there. You will experience that when samādhi comes. But before that level of consciousness is achieved, we have to purify these three things which I told you before noon: Mala, Vikṣepa, and Āvaraṇa. This Mala, Vikṣepa, and Āvaraṇa is our problem; it is this Mala, Vikṣepa, and Āvaraṇa which keeps our consciousness separated from the cosmic consciousness. For that purpose, this meditation is done so that you can realize that. And once you get that taste, it is so tasty that all taste of this world for you is tasteless. All tastes of this world which you can taste through the ten senses are tasteless. Then nothing is important for you. Then that taste of Brahman, as soon as you close your eyes, in the area of your heart, a kind of joy begins, and that is Oṃ. So that is in the Oṃ: "Oṃ Kāra Bindu Sanyuktaṃ Nityaṃ Dhyāyanti Yoginaḥ, Kāmaṃ Dharmaṃ Mokṣaṃ Padam Chaiva Oṃ Kāraya Namaḥ Namaḥ." Therefore, it is the highest Oṃ.
