The endless Universe and the cosmic consciousness

A spiritual discourse on the nature of the universe and the path to divine union.

"Can you think of something that is endless? Endless, endless, anant, anant, anant."

"If you truly wish to know the ocean's depth, you must jump into it and discover it for yourself."

Swamiji contemplates the endlessness (anant) of creation and the cosmos, contrasting it with human perceptions of endless problems. He shares a parable of a salt statue diving into the ocean to know its depth, using it as a metaphor for the seeker who must merge with the infinite to know God, ultimately becoming one with the formless, everlasting Cosmic Consciousness.

Śṛṣṭi means creation, and within this creation is included all vegetation, our planet, oceans, rivers, and everything. It is said that the ākāśa element—the space, the sky in which we exist—is of an unknown age and size. In Sanskrit, it is said to be anant. In Sanskrit, it is called anant, which means endless. Can you think of something that is endless? Can you come up with something that is endless? Endless, endless, anant, anant, anant. Endless, endless, anant—no end. I remember sometimes people come to me and tell me, "Nekad mi ljudi kažu, Svāmījī, I have so many problems, there is no end, endless problems." They say, "Svāmījī, mojim problemima nema kraja, endless problems." "Moji problemi su bezkrajni." Is there some end to the problems? So when we cannot see the end of our own problems, how can we see the end of this endless universe? Anant Brahmāṇḍ, anant Brahmāṇḍ. Here, Brahmāṇḍa means one solar system. Ananta Brahmāṇḍa means many, many thousands and thousands of solar systems. And Ananta Brahman means an infinite number of such systems. We exist within this solar system. We are the limited ones, and that is the limitless. There is a story of a statue made out of salt. The salt statue went to the ocean beach and asked the people, "Do you know how deep the ocean is?" Some said twenty meters, some said one hundred meters, some said one thousand meters. All gave different answers. But that salty statue wanted to know exactly how deep it was. A wise man was sitting on the beach who said, "Well, if you really want to know how deep the ocean is, then jump in yourself and find out." If you truly wish to know the ocean's depth, you must jump into it and discover it for yourself. So that salty statue took a bathing suit, jumped into the ocean, and has not come out to this day. What happened? The statue, made of salt, melted. And that is why the ocean is salty. Similarly, one who is searching for God must dive into this endless universe. Then you cannot come out anymore, because you will become one with that One. You become one with it, sarvatra—everywhere in that endless universe where nothing exists, no light, no darkness. Mahāprabhujī said in one bhajana: "Rangan rupa rup Anādi"—there is no color and no form, but it is everlasting. "Guruvar me chalu sa un desh"—oh Lord, Gurudev, I wish to go with you to that place, that country. That entire universe, though it is endless, I understand as a mother principle. It is called the mother's womb, because within the universe resides that Cosmic Consciousness. Recording location: Hungary, Vep, summer seminar
