Overcoming Fear: The Path to Fearlessness

Fear governs all life and must be overcome.

Fear is the root of all worldly problems, present in every creature. It controls everything through the fear of loss—of position, money, relationships, and ultimately death. Fear is rooted in desire and personal longing. We constantly petition God from a place of desire, yet forget Him when our desires are fulfilled. If we meet God, we may not recognize Him due to our preoccupations. To be above desire is to be free from fear.

"Your Satguru will protect you, don’t worry."

"Vāsanā, desires, icchā, longing—these are the producers of fear."

This is fear, and as long as fear is there, you have not mastered everything. Therefore, a very important thing is to overcome fear. Bhaya and abhaya. Bhaya means fear. Abhaya means fearless. This is why, in one bhajan, Gurujī said: "Your Satguru will protect you, don’t worry. Satguru will protect you, don’t worry." Fearless, niśaṅk, without any doubt, kābhimata dhāraṇā—never be fearful. That state of consciousness is fearless. All problems in the world are because of fear, and all creatures, prāṇī mātrā, jīva mātrā, have fear. Whether a little ant, a little fly, birds, animals, or humans—all have fear. Fear is something that governs everything: fear of losing one's position, fear of losing money, fear of losing relationships, fear... and the fear of dying, of death. This is the difference between that one, and that is the difference between a yogī and a nāma. Now, where is fear? Where is fear rooted? Fear is related and rooted in desire, icchā. "God, help me, please. Pože, pomoz mi, so that I pass my examination. God, help me, please, so that my husband understands me. God, help me, please, so that I overcome my illness." All the time we are bothering God, and when He helps, we forget Him. When everything is done, we do not think of Him. And if, by chance, He meets you somewhere on the street, you do not even recognize Him. But if He speaks to you—"How are you?"—you just say, "Hello. Sorry, I have no time." Then God says, "Okay, God, do something." And you turn back and say, "Please, God, forgive me, I didn’t recognize you." Vāsanā, desires, icchā, longing—these are the producers of fear. If you are above fear, then everything is okay.
