Inner and outer world

A discourse on the path of Bhakti Yoga and the nature of the inner self.

"In Kali Yuga, it is said the best way to cross the ocean of ignorance is the name of God. This means Bhakti Yoga is the best way to cross, and it is called the call of the soul."

"Rather than changing the outer world, it is better to change the inner one. That is what Mahātmā Gandhi said: 'Be the change you want to see,' meaning you must change yourself."

The speaker explains Bhajan as a primary path for self and God realization in the current age. He describes the inner world as a personal reality that one seeks to project outward, arguing that true peace comes from transforming the inner self rather than the external world. The talk outlines a spiritual progression from worldly attachments to seeking God and, ultimately, a permanent bliss realized through a Master and satsang, while acknowledging the changing nature of the inner self.

Bhajan is the best way to understand God and to understand oneself. Bhajans are like prayers; they are like mantras. Different devotees and seekers have different ways of calling upon God. A Jñāna Yogī has a different way, and a Rāja Yogī has a different way. A Karma Yogī has different feelings, and a Bhakti Yogī has different feelings. For the Bhakti Yogī, it is said: Kali Yuga kevala nāma ādhāra, sumira sumira nara hoi bhava pāra. In Kali Yuga, it is said the best way to cross the ocean of ignorance is the name of God. This means Bhakti Yoga is the best way to cross, and it is called the call of the soul. There is someone sitting within us, feeling lonely, lost, scared, and having some longing. It is not that someone loves us, but we are looking for someone whom we can love. We are searching for a screen where we can project our inner feelings. Our inner film is a chapter of our life. That is the reality of our being, our inner one, and it expresses very clearly the state of your being and your consciousness. Because then, when you speak, you see how your words are selfish or unselfish. Your inner world is different from another's inner world, and you want to change that inner world to be like your own. But that is not possible, because your inner world cannot be the world of everyone. Therefore, the outer world is the world of everyone. The birds want to see this world differently; animals want to see it differently; insects want to see it differently. Every creature wants to create the environment according to their requirements and their nature. Consequently, it is very difficult to create the outer world according to your inner feelings, your inner world. To influence the outer world according to your inner feelings is difficult, so rather than changing the outer world, it is better to change the inner one. That is what Mahātmā Gandhi said: "Be the change you want to see," meaning you must change yourself. You have to be sure; otherwise, you make a mistake, and that mistake will give you suffering sooner or later. This is because you were not thinking it over, and you want to change the world to be like your inner world. That cannot be, because maybe after some time, you don't want to see that world which you changed. Your inner world is changeable. So always try to correct and change the inner. One day you will reach a certain point, and you will say to yourself, "Enough, stop, no more." An end to that suffering will come one day, when you will completely disconnect automatically. When a small child is there, the happiness of the whole world for that child is toys. This toy is the happiness for the child. As soon as the child grows up, they search for other toys, because they know automatically that it is just a toy. Yet you are thinking that all the happiness of the whole world is in this toy which you are searching for now. You find a partner, and now you think that all joy and happiness is in this, but very soon you will have enough of this toy. Then you will look for another toy, and that is the spiritual toy. You turn to God, and very soon you will give this up also. You will search for something permanent, and then you will meet the Master who will tell you what to do; you will go to the satsaṅgs. And there you realize permanent, everlasting bliss. But again, your inner self is changing. And then again, all problems come. Therefore, make sure, and then remain on that. Then you search for what you want to have; it may take a lifelong time, or some lives. Do not worry, you will come back—whether you believe it or not.
