Opening speech at the World Peace conference in Ahmedabad
The path to peace is found in yoga, not religion. Many discuss peace, but conflict stems from disturbances in human consciousness, not poverty. Religion is not destructive; people abuse it. No religion instructs followers to fight; all major traditions uphold non-violence. Yoga purifies consciousness, as it is the cessation of the mind's fluctuations. Yoga is not a religion; it is older than all religions and is their source. It is a complete science of life and the balancing force of the universe. Modern technology requires control, like ancient yogic techniques. Yoga's global spread is a re-easternization, preserved by dedicated teachers. Human life is incomplete without yoga, which leads to health, happiness, peace, and the Self. Missionary work and conversion, however, create conflict and hinder peace. We must give without imposition or expectation of return.
"Yogaḥ citta vṛtti nirodhaḥ (Yoga is the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind)."
"Missionary activity is the biggest problem creating suffering in the world today; it is why there is war in the eastern part of this globe."
