Dharma of the Family

A spiritual discourse on dharma, or sacred duty, and its role in a fulfilled life.

"Everyone, you have your dharma. Dharma rakṣita rakṣita—if you can protect your dharma, then your dharma will protect you."

"When you realize your dharma, many, many of your worries will go away. When the sun rises, the darkness will disappear; clarity will come in your life."

A speaker teaches on the principle of dharma as our fundamental connection to a single divine source. He explains dharma through societal roles like spouse, parent, and sibling, advocating for commitment and criticizing modern divorce. Using analogies like the sun dispelling darkness and a cow producing cream, he urges the audience to discover their personal and higher dharma to achieve happiness and relieve suffering, referencing Hindu texts and figures like Gandhi.

All are originated from one, and that is why we are all connected together. It is the water of the same lake, the water of the same river. Then your life will be successful. For what? You are born for a highest duty. We are born with some high duty, karmic duties, karmic responsibilities. It is said, "Everyone, you have your dharma. Dharma rakṣita rakṣita—if you can protect your dharma, then your dharma will protect you." If you can't protect your dharma, your dharma cannot protect you. But what is your dharma? That you should understand. There is the dharma of the mother, the dharma of the father, the dharma of the husband towards wife. For him, there is nothing more divine and beautiful, prosperous, glorious, and divine than the wife. And for her, nothing is more divine, gracious, kind, and gentle than the husband. Such a marriage will not break. Divorce? Oh, my God. This word doesn't exist in the dictionary of the husband and wife. The first time I came to Europe, in 1971 or '70—it was already '70—they asked me, "What is your opinion about divorce?" because I had a lecture, and then after the lecture there are some questions and answers. And I said, "It's very good." I said, "Devotion is very good, and you are a personal God." It was not easy for me to grasp and understand, because from where I come, there is no word existing like 'divorce'. In my life, I never saw a person who is divorced. And why? You live for a few years together and then you say, "Now we will marry." You married already long ago. And you say, "No, we don't understand, so we will not marry." That's not correct. And blessed is the man who finds such a divine goddess. Each, it is both together, my dears. But that, you have to earn this and wait. Dharma rakṣita rakṣitaha. And if I speak about mother, oh, that endless, endless universe. Within which millions of stars, billions of stars, and millions of solar systems exist, that endless universe is the mother, and all is existing within her body. Mātṛ Devo Bhava—in the Upaniṣad it is said, "Mātṛ Devo Bhava"—mother is God. And before they plan to have a child, father and mother, oh, their prayers, their fasting, their physical and mental cleansing takes place. And they pray to God to give some divine soul which will do something good in this world. But now they are born out of the alcohol bottles, and that's it. And that's why we can see the situation of the world, how the world is suffering. But you see, it's not lost. And I would also like to write some poems and bhajans, but what can I write? Mahāprabhujī said, "Yes, cream, cream they have taken, right? I accept your opinion. But you know, makhan khayā to kyā huā, dainu hamāre pās. If they have eaten the cream, doesn't matter, we still have the cow. Feed her with love and milk her again, you will have more cream again." And that cow is your buddhi, your intellect, your wisdom. First know thy dharma, that's it. So you know, in Buddhism, dharma and karma, these two are very important. Buddhism is a branch of Hinduism. What is your dharma if you are walking in the street and you see some accident happened? Help in those ways which you can. Therefore, I would tell you personally that first you should know what is your personal dharma. You have dharma of the mother, dharma of the father, dharma of the brother, dharma of the sister, dharma of the colleagues. Many, many, these are worldly dharmas. But besides this, may you have some higher dharma, and you have to find this dharma. When you find this dharma, immediately your ātmā will be relaxed. When you go to the operation theater for the operation, oh, you are nervous, scared, pain here, pain there, pain here and there. The doctor gives you only one injection, anesthesia, and you are relaxed, sleeping. All pain is gone, worry is gone, fear is gone. You are sleeping in deep sleep, and so it is that on the day when you realize your dharma, many, many of your worries will go away. When the sun rises, the darkness will disappear, that's it; clarity will come in your life, and you will be so happy, the happiest person. So, only doing āsanas and prāṇāyāmas and eating good, healthy food, yes, this is very good. But still, it is not that which you need, my dear, and for that, first, Vaiṣṇavas are the spiritual people; they are those who know the pain of others. And if you understand the pain of others, you cannot kill anyone, that's it. And therefore, Gandhijī said, "We hate the action, we do not hate the person." And we will not take the weapon, we will not kill; we will fight for our rights without weapons. Recording location: Australia, World Peace Tour 2004
