Spiritual lineage

A discourse on the critical importance of spiritual lineage and authentic transmission.

"Our spiritual development does not depend only on our own practice and the practicing or guiding of the present teacher."

"A diamond will never say that I am a diamond. And therefore, the great one never speaks about oneself."

Swami Avatarpuri addresses a gathering in Prague, expressing joy at the reunion and reminiscing about visiting with his master, Holy Gurujī. He explains that authentic spiritual wisdom flows through a genuine lineage, detailing his own which is rooted in the Himalayas through masters like Śrī Alakhpurījī, Śrī Devpurījī, Mahāprabhujī, and Holy Gurujī. He cautions against following self-proclaimed teachers, emphasizes that the energy he shares comes from this lineage, and uses analogies of flowing water and a diamond to illustrate the humility and proper direction of true spiritual transmission.

I wish you all the very best, good health, and a long life. Once more, good evening to everybody. I am very happy to see you. I was looking forward to seeing you in Prague. It is a beautiful time; this is precisely the time when Prague is most beautiful. And the most beautiful thing in Prague is all of you when I see you. This reminds me very much of when I came with Holy Gurujī the second time to Prague. You know that, unfortunately, Holy Gurujī is not among us physically, but in his spirit, with his nirguṇa form, with his light, he is there. Always, in spirituality and for spiritual development, it is very important to know the spiritual lineage. Our spiritual development does not depend only on our own practice and the practicing or guiding of the present teacher. That present teacher may be an enlightened one, but still, the consciousness of the one who is residing in physical form is more connected to the physical world. The spirituality or wisdom which comes through that master—you may call it teacher or Gurū or master or guide; these are differences of words—it is very important from which source that spirituality is coming. So, the spiritual lineage is very important. We have to take care and know where that spiritual lineage is coming from. Our spiritual lineage is deeply rooted in the Himalayas, several thousands of years old. We only remember from Śrī Alakhpurījī. From Śrī Alakhpurījī, we remember only theoretically. We are not so far pure enough, or we are not so far lucky enough, that we can have his darśan. Then, descending from there to Śrī Devpurījī, we also have not met Śrī Devpurījī, but we heard a lot about him. We experienced many things from him. We feel the guidance of Śrī Alakhpurījī and Śrī Devpurījī, and then the coming of Mahāprabhujī. All of you must have, all of you have beautiful experiences with Mahāprabhujī, though our physical eyes have not seen him physically. But we know what Mahāprabhujī was. The holy book, Līlā Amṛt, tells us, and that book is a living book. After that, we know our beloved Holy Gurujī. Many, many of you were blessed ones that you could see Holy Gurujī with these physical eyes. When you saw the Gurujī, you saw Mahāprabhujī. It means you saw Śrī Devpurījī. Because that is transferring the energy from these physical eyes to those physical eyes. So, it is a descending. This spiritual lineage is very, very important, I tell you. When it is raining, the water falls from the hill and flows down; it does not flow from down to up. And that is why, always when we have devotion to God or devotion to the Master or the spiritual persons, the wisdom comes to us. That was my very big concern; I felt very discomforted that my master is sitting down and I am sitting up. That should not happen; it is opposite. Because I know what it is and what we get from there. So, for spiritual development, for the achievement of our spiritual goal, or for our self-realization, the spiritual lineage is very important. It has something in it. You are educated according to the European culture. Let us say Rome. The holy chair in Rome. What does it mean for you, that holy chair? The person who is selected or, let us say, has had abhiṣeka to sit on that holy chair—what you call the Pope—what does it mean for the Roman Catholics? The Pope, not the physical body of that person, but that holy chair. So, it is the spiritual lineage. Some lineages unfortunately end; some lineages merge into others. So, we have to be very careful about which kind of meditations, which kind of yoga techniques we are doing, if we are not doing something from what we call the self-made master's techniques. It is called Svayaṃbhu Gurus. They declare themselves, "I am the Gurū." And that can, and that will not lead us anywhere. And it can also lead us to confusion. You know me many years. I am always telling that the wisdom, the spirituality, the knowledge, the spiritual energy that I am giving you is not from me. It is coming from someone. So, it is the link from master to master. We know up to Holy Gurujī. And now, the next ones are we, you and me. So, how will we succeed? How will we develop? That we cannot say now. We cannot judge. You see, a diamond cannot just say, "I am the diamond." Others have to say, "Oh, this is a diamond." A diamond will never say that I am a diamond. Even if you throw the diamond in the garbage or put it in some treasure, a diamond will never say that I am the diamond. And therefore, the great one never speaks about oneself. One never glorifies oneself. And if one says, "I am self-realized, I do not need any master," then you should know how deep this water is. This water is only a small little water in a little hole of a cow's foot, not the ocean. Recording location: Czech Republic, Prague, Weekend seminar
