Universe and yoga

Yoga is the universal balancing principle, as ancient as creation itself. Before manifestation, only an indescribable void and awake consciousness existed in perfect harmony. This consciousness, residing within the cosmic mother, held no desire. Then willpower arose—the desire to multiply. This first desire was the sound OM. From this primordial vibration, the three qualities and the elements were sequentially created: fire, air, water, and earth. Over billions of years, all solar systems and planets formed from these elements. This same balancing principle of creation exists within you, governing the five elements, mind, and consciousness. Imbalance is illness or chaos; balance is health and harmony. Thus, yoga is the union of individual consciousness with the cosmic source. We seek happiness because our true nature is that cosmic joy; temporary worldly joys eventually yield sorrow. True, lasting joy is found in realizing the Self.

"The balancing principle is known as yoga."

"Yoga means the union of the individual consciousness with the cosmic consciousness."

Many of you know about yoga, and many may be listening for the first time. You know that across the whole world, wherever you find humans, you will find yoga in daily life. What my own experiences and meditations tell me, and according to the experiences of many, many self-realized great saints and the holy Vedas—the most ancient scriptures—is this: Ānand Brahman. Sahasraśūryas. An endless universe and thousands of sun systems exist in this universe. This was said by the Vedas several thousand years ago. Before those thousands of sun systems were created in this universe, there was said to be "Anant Brahman"—only the endless universe. A dark, empty, void space, where nothing existed. No planets, no sun, no moon, no stars, no elements. Now, that endless universe, whose size we do not know—our intellect, the human intellect, suggests that when we talk about the universe, it is something like an egg, round, a ball. But if it is something round, that cannot be accepted. What is behind that? In what is that egg existing? In what? Therefore, that endless universe is indescribable; you cannot describe it. That is called the body of the cosmic mother, or the universal mother. And within that is residing the chetanya, the consciousness. The conscious means awakened. It never dormants. It never sleeps. Chetanya, awakened, is always awakened. So that cosmic consciousness is residing in the womb or the lap of the cosmic mother. And that is a perfect harmony, a perfect balance. Mother means to preserve, to care about it, to let it develop, to give love, to protect. The mother principle is the highest principle. But in that, śūnyākāśa has no ability to do anything. It is an empty space, which is here also. We say God is very far, farther than you could think. God is very near, nearer than you could think, because He is like the sky, space. So this space is everywhere. And the Chaitanya has no desire to do anything. No action. It doesn’t do anything. And that was the condition: Sunyakash and Chaitanya are together. Within that comes Pūrṇa, one power, Śakti. Pūrṇa, willpower, desire. "I am one, and I want to multiply. I have one, and I want to multiply." That vṛtti, the desire. Ta vṛtti, ta touhā. And that was the nāda, the sound. And we declare that that sound was the OM. And everything is created out of the sound. A-U-M, A-U-M, A-U-M has created the three guṇas, the three qualities: Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas, through which came the Trinity: Creator, Protector, and Liberator. So Nāda, the Vedas declare, is Nāda Rūpa Parabrahma. Again, the form of the Supreme is the resonance, the sound. And that resonance is in the entire universe, even in your body. Each blood cell is filled with immense resonance. All planets which are moving are balanced with the resonance. So with this first sound, the fire element, Tejas, was created. And through this Tejas was created vāyu, the air. Tejas and vāyu together created āpa, the water element. And then the fourth element, which was created last, is called the earth element. The process spans many, many years—billions of years. First, it produced the four elements: the space that was and is, the Ākāśa Tattva, and the other four tattvas. After that, all the different planets and thousands of solar systems were created, comprising all visible and invisible elements in this endless universe. It is all perfectly balanced, and that balancing principle is known as yoga. That same principle has descended into your body. The five elements are perfectly balanced within you, plus mind, emotion, memory, words, consciousness, and so on. All are balanced. If there is no balance between body and mind, then we are known as a psychically ill person. Therefore, we should have balance—emotional balance, intellectual balance. So, who is balancing within you? Think it over. What kind of principle is within us which is controlling us? That is yoga. If some balance is missing, creating an imbalance, then it means illness. It means an earthquake. It means some explosion on some planets or stars—a disbalance. So, to restore balance, we must utilize that original technique. Just as a building is made from bricks, mud, and water, if something is wrong with our body, we should treat it with the same elements, the same original materials or techniques. Thus, yoga means the balancing principle. With order, you feel harmony. And where there is harmony, there is unity. So, yoga means harmony, and yoga means unity. Literally, you will read in every yoga book: yoga means the union of the individual consciousness with the cosmic consciousness. That cosmic consciousness is the one residing in that endless śūnyākāśa. With that nāda, with that vibration and sound, the light is passing through. It is like when you switch on a light: the bulb burns, and the light travels far. But from where is the light coming? From that particular bulb. So we are the light of that origin, and that origin is the cosmic Self. We are searching our way back to that cosmic Self. Every creature, from the ant to the elephant, seeks to be happy. Day and night, they search for happiness; no one searches for unhappiness. Why do we search for happiness? Why do we wish to be happy? Because God is happiness, and because we are a part of that cosmic Self. Therefore, we are also happiness; our real nature is happiness. We will be happy when we find our real Self. Meanwhile, whatever we find that brings temporary happiness will eventually disappoint us. The joy we experience in the material world is but a little joy; one day, that very joy will cause more sorrow. So where is true joy? Real joy lies in knowing the reality, the Self. Then, automatically, our body, mind, and soul will be in harmony and balance. That cosmic energy, that vibration, resides in each and every blood cell. Though the primordial sound was created billions and billions of years ago, it is still resonating throughout this universe. Therefore, yoga is as old as the universe itself.
