Universe and yoga

A discourse on the essence and cosmic origins of yoga.

"Before those thousands of sun systems were created in this universe, there was said to be Ananta Brahman, only an endless universe: dark, empty, void space, where nothing existed."

"And this balancing principle is known as yoga... So yoga means harmony. And yoga means unity. So literally, you read in every book on yoga that yoga means the union of individual consciousness with cosmic consciousness."

Swami Maheshwarananda (Swamiji) presents a teaching on yoga's fundamental nature, describing it as the universal principle of balance. He narrates a cosmological creation story from the Vedas, beginning with an endless void (Śūnyākāśa) and cosmic consciousness (Chaitanya), from which desire, the primordial sound Oṃ, and the five elements emerge. He explains that this same balancing principle of yoga exists within the human body and mind, and that true happiness is found in realizing one's true Self and achieving unity with the cosmic consciousness.

I would like to come to the main points of yoga. Many of you know about yoga, and many are perhaps listening for the first time. Meanwhile, you know that around the whole world, wherever you find humans, you will find yoga and Yoga in Daily Life. What my own experiences and meditations tell me, and according to the experiences of the many, many self-realized great saints and the holy Vedas—the most ancient scriptures—is this: Ānand Brahman, Sahasra Sūryas, an endless universe and thousands of sun systems exist. This has been said by the Vedas several thousands of years ago. Before those thousands of sun systems were created in this universe, there was said to be Ananta Brahman, only an endless universe: dark, empty, void space, where nothing existed. No planets, no sun, no moon, no stars, no elements. That endless universe, which we don't know how big it is, is described by our intellect as something like an egg, round, a ball. But if it is something round, it cannot be accepted. What is behind that? In what is that egg existing? Therefore, that endless universe is indescribable; you cannot describe it. That is called the body of the cosmic mother, or the universal mother. Within that resides the Chetanā, the consciousness. The conscious means awakened; it never dormants. It never sleeps. Chetanā, awakened, is always awakened. So that cosmic consciousness resides in the womb or the lap of the cosmic mother. And that is a perfect harmony, perfect balance. Mother means to preserve, to care about it, to let it develop, to give love, to protect. The mother principle is the highest principle. But in that Śūnyākāśa, there is no ability to do anything. It is an empty space, which is here also. We say God is very far, farther than you could think. God is very near, nearer than you could think, because He is like the sky, space. So this space is everywhere. And the Chaitanya has no desire to do anything. It is not active; it doesn't do anything. That was the condition: Śūnyākāśa and Chaitanya are together. Within that comes Pūrṇa, one power, Śakti. Pūrṇa, willpower, desire. Eko'ham bahu syām: "I am one, and I want to multiply." That vṛtti, the desire. And that was the Nāda, sound. And we declare that sound was Oṃ. And everything is created out of the sound. A-U-M. A.U.M. has created three guṇas, three qualities: Sattva, Rajas, and Tamas. Through which came the Trinity: Creator, Protector, and Liberator. So Nāda, the Vedas declare, Nāda Rūpa Parabrahma. Again, the form of the supreme is the resonance, the sound. And that resonance is in the entire universe, even in your body. Each blood cell is filled with immense resonance. All planets which are moving are moving and balanced with the resonance. With this first sound was created the fire element, Tejas. And through this Tejas was created Vāyu, air. Tejas and Vāyu together created Āpa, the water element. And then the fourth element, which was created last, is called the earth element. This process took many, many years, billions of years. Now we have four elements: space, which was and which is, Ākāśa Tattva, and these other four tattvas. Thereafter, many different planets and thousands of solar systems were created. All visible and invisible elements in this endless universe. It is perfectly balanced. And this balancing principle is known as yoga. And it is present in your body, too. The five elements are in your body perfectly balanced. Furthermore, mind, emotions, memory, words, consciousness, and so on. Everything is balanced. If there is no balance between body and mind, then we are known as a mentally ill person. So we should have balance, emotional balance, intellectual balance. So who balances you? Think. What kind of principle is in us, which rules in us? That is yoga. So if any balance is missing, there is imbalance, then that means illness. That means an earthquake. That means some explosion on some planets, in stars. Imbalance. So to create balance, we must use that original technique. This building is built from bricks, clay, and water. And when something in this building is damaged, we again use the same materials. Similarly, if something is wrong with our body, then we should heal our body with the same elements, the same materials. And those are, I mean, the original materials or techniques. So yoga means the balancing principle. And where there is balance, there is then harmony. And when there is no balance, there is no harmony. And when we don't have balance in the body, some pain appears, for example a toothache, and then we are not happy. When there is order, you feel harmony. And when there is harmony, then there is unity. So yoga means harmony. And yoga means unity. So literally, you read in every book on yoga that yoga means the union of individual consciousness with cosmic consciousness. That cosmic consciousness is that which dwells in that endless Śūnyākāśa. And with that Nāda, with that vibration, that sound, the light passes through. Like when you switch on the light, you light a bulb and the light goes far. But from where does that light come? From that specific bulb. So we are the light of that origin. And that origin is the cosmic Self. And we are seeking the way back to that cosmic Self. Every being, from an ant to an elephant, wants to be happy. Day and night they seek happiness. Nobody seeks unhappiness. Why do we seek happiness? Why do we want to be happy? Because God is happiness. And because we are part of that cosmic Self. Therefore we are also happiness. Our true nature is happiness. And when will we be happy? When we find our true Self. Meanwhile, whatever we find that makes us happy temporarily, we will again be disappointed. So the joy from joy is lesser joy than the sorrow from that joy. The joy which we think in the material world is joy for us is lesser joy; one day that joy will cause more sorrow. So where is joy? True joy is in the knowledge of reality, the Self. Then automatically our body, our mind, and our soul will be in harmony, in balance. So that cosmic energy, that vibration, is in every blood cell. Even though it was billions and billions of years ago when that sound was created, it still resonates in this universe. So yoga is as old as this universe.
