Creation

A discourse on the primordial sound and the origin of creation.

"In the very beginning, this endless universe was just empty. Only empty space—dark, blue, empty space."

"That desire, that will, appeared in the form of hope, of sound. Anant, endless sound—that is it, Oṃ."

The speaker describes the state of pure consciousness before creation and the first divine movement, or wish, which manifested as the primordial sound Oṃ. This sound is explained as the source of the three guṇas and the foundational element from which all creation, including the elements like fire and air, subsequently emerged.

In the very beginning, this endless universe was just empty. There were no planets, no stars, no moon, and no sun. There were no elements. Only empty space—dark, blue, empty space. There were no motions, just peace, and within that resided the consciousness in a perfect, balanced, and happy state. That endless universe is the cosmic mother. The mother principle is to protect, to preserve, to observe, and to let it develop. In that cosmic mother's lap resides that consciousness—perfect balance, harmony, peace, and unity. That is our origin, that is our nature, and that is what we are searching for. That is meditation, which should lead us to that state of consciousness. In that endless universe, within that consciousness where there were no emotions, one movement came. You may call it desire, you may call it wish, or you may call it divine will; you may call it feelings. So the most ancient literature with us says, "I am one, and now I will multiply." That divine wish, that divine will, is described in this way. And that itself, that wish, was the nāda, sound. That desire, that will, appeared in the form of hope, of sound. Anant, endless sound—that is it, Oṃ. A-U-M: akāra, ukāra, makāra. That original sound is the sound Oṃ, A-U-M, Oṃ. And that is the body of the Svayambhū, that one which has manifested itself; no one has created it. From these three—akāra, ukāra, makāra—the three guṇas take place: sattva, rajas, and tamas. If you know Āyurveda, they speak very much about guṇas; if you read the Bhagavad Gītā, Kṛṣṇa speaks a lot about guṇas. The manifestation took place. It is that sound which is the origin of all these creations; the sound is the origin of this creation. Nāda, the root, the form of the supreme, is the resonance. That statement, derived, says that the sound, or rather the resonance, is the form of the supreme. The form of God is resonance, and that can be heard anywhere. Sound is God, and that can be heard everywhere, and that resonance is still now, continuously resonating in the entire universe. The Vedas said, "What exists in the universe exists in this body." Vedas means the knowledge—knowledge about the entire universe. If you didn't read the Vedas, you read nothing. And if you read the Vedas, you will see what you know—just one drop in the endless ocean. So from this nāda, the resonance, the first element created was tejas. The second element that followed was air. And fourth, the earth. The fifth, ether, or endless space, was there, is here, and will be here. Recording location: Slovenia, Maribor, Public Lecture
