Gurukripa

A spiritual discourse on the nature of a guru's grace and devotion.

"You cannot purchase Guru Kṛpā with money, nor can you buy it with any work or worldly strategy."

"I desire neither red, yellow, green, nor purple; I wish only to be dyed in your color. And what is His color? It is devotion—bhakti."

The speaker explains that a guru's grace, which is essential for liberation, cannot be acquired through worldly means but is received through devoted service and a loving bond. Using the metaphor of a cloth dyed by a divine colorist from a Kabīr bhajan, the discourse illustrates the desire for the soul to be permanently colored by the hue of devotion to God. The talk also includes internal remarks questioning the logical consistency of how this grace is transmitted.

To understand the Guru's word (Guruvākya) is to understand service to the Guru (guru-sevā). Only by performing that service can one receive the Guru's grace (guru-kṛpā). This grace is the very root of liberation; guru-kṛpā alone is everything. You cannot purchase Guru Kṛpā with money, nor can you buy it with any work or worldly strategy. Even if the Guru wishes to, he cannot simply give you this grace. It is not a commodity like an apple that can be handed over; it is a cosmic process. It is something very different, transmitted automatically. It is a relationship, a bond of love between guru and disciple. Consider the bhajan of Kabīr Dās: "Chadariyā, jhīnī, re, jhīnī." The dyer (Raṅgrezā) has dyed the cloth so profoundly—"aisī rāṅgī lālo, lāl kar dīnī"—he colored it such a beautiful, lasting red. I gave my soul to that colorist. Similarly, one prays to Kṛṣṇa: "Please color my shawl in your color." For many, many lifetimes, one may try to wash it out, but that color does not fade. I desire neither red, yellow, green, nor purple; I wish only to be dyed in your color. And what is His color? It is devotion—bhakti. "Bhakti-odanost." May such devotion grate me and bless me—a devotion that, across many lives, is never removed. It remains permanent. That is the color we must attain. And no one present here can color you in that way. That coloring happens automatically, from both sides. Recording location: Czech Republic, Strilky, Mantra anusthan seminar
