Celebration days should remain on their place

A discourse on the observance of Mahāsamādhi, or the remembrance of a departed spiritual master.

"Mahāsamādhi day is not observed in the spirit of a celebration; it is what we call sarañjali—we call it remembering them."

"In every āshram or in every organization, on these days, prayers should be offered, prasād should be taken, given, and meditated upon."

A speaker explains the solemn nature of Mahāsamādhi observance as a day of remembrance and homage, contrasting it with a celebratory event. He details the devotional practices of prayer and satsaṅg, and emphasizes the duty of every ashram to organize these observances on the correct calendar date, regardless of attendance, as time does not wait.

In that sense, it is not a celebration of the Mahāsamādhi day. Mahāsamādhi day is not observed in the spirit of a celebration; it is what we call sarañjali—we call it remembering them. It can rather be called a remembrance to pay our homage: to remember, to sing, and to do something good in that name, on that day, in their name. If we are a normal worldly person, then we pray to God for their liberation and enlightenment, or for the well-being of that departed soul—no matter where it is, in which part of the universe, in astral form or in physical form again. And if it is a spiritual or what we call divine being, then we pray to them to bless us and forgive all our mistakes, which we did and which we are doing. Because from that astral level, they see everything through and through: what you did and what you are doing. But if it is reversed—if the spiritual being departs—then we pray for them to stay within us, to forgive us for the mistakes we have committed. From where they are, from the astral world, they can see everything we have committed. And therefore, on this day, we are thinking and praying to those divine ātmās. So throughout the whole world, wherever we have an āshram, today people are gathering, having prayers, and they send us fax or telephone because they know I am here. It is the duty of the board committee—if there is a board committee of those organizations of the āshrams—to organize at least these programs or the satsaṅgs of our spiritual lineage. In the name of our spiritual lineage, the responsibility of each āshram leader is to organize the program, the satsaṅg, on the day of the spiritual master for its members. And the responsibility of all management departments, if they exist in our āshrams, is to organize the remembrance in the spirit of our spiritual tradition and the line of teaching on this day. There is no question of asking, "Should we make the satsaṅg or not?" In the church they don't ask if they should celebrate Christmas or not. Other companies, as a social event and as a mere formality, do it on different days for celebrations. So it doesn't matter if it's a working day or a non-working day. It doesn't matter if there are a thousand people or only two persons. In every āshram or in every organization, on these days, prayers should be offered, prasād should be taken, given, and meditated upon. Invite those who come; those who don't come, that is their concern. Now, on this day, satsaṅg is organized—that is, prayer, prasād, and meditation are undertaken—and when it comes, it comes. And all devotees should approach their nearest place. You see, the full moon doesn't wait for Sunday or the weekend to be full. And so certain events you should not do just obligatorily, even if I am not there. If I come one day later, you think we will do it one day later; that is not correct. Yes, one day later you can do more satsaṅg and prasād, that is okay. But because of anyone, time does not wait. So the calendar date is changing, and likewise in every āshram they are doing it. In the German language, this is self-sustaining. Thank you. Recording location: Hungary, Vep, Summer Workshop
