Eat that sweet, which makes you immortal

A spiritual discourse on finding inner peace and controlling the senses.

"O Mājī, where is that peaceful corner? It is the peaceful soul. That is it; this is peace."

"Ācārya Rāmjī said: 'That is the sweet which makes you immortal when you eat it.'"

The speaker explores the quest for the peaceful soul, equating it with tasting the immortal nectar (amṛt). He critiques the slavery to physical taste and compulsive eating, contrasting it with the true sweetness of spiritual immortality, as taught by Ācārya Rāmjī. The talk connects controlling desire to developing empathy for others.

O Mājī, where is that peaceful spot? The saints say, "Dūr nagariyā jānā"—one must go to a distant city. O Mother, where is that peaceful corner? It is the peaceful soul. That is it; this is peace. Truly, our soul regenerates here—our body, our mind. Only those who understand have already tested this. Whoever has tasted honey knows what honey means. Those who have not yet tasted it do not know what honey is. Similarly, only those who have tasted amṛt know what amṛt is. Others do not know. We think amṛt is something sweet, like honey. Perhaps it is not like honey. That is a different test. Therefore, one bhajan says, "As-Salāmu-Alaikum." And in another bhajan it is said: "What is sweet? Sweet is that which makes you immortal when you eat it." We all eat sweet things: chocolate, cake. Every country has its own. Because sweetness gives a kind of satisfaction. But perhaps that sweetness creates more desires, or creates more disease. The dentist is not happy, the tissues in your body are not happy, and perhaps your pancreas is also not so happy. The only things happy are your gums and tongue. And we are slaves to this. Ācārya Rāmjī said there are ten senses in this body, but two are very difficult to control: passion, sex, and taste. Some people try to fulfill their desires through certain tests, like sugar or chocolate. They turn the television on and eat half a kilo of nuts, or perhaps two kilos of pomfrets. There are some who empty their fridge every night because, unnecessarily, things are lying there that need to be eaten. But the next day it must be filled again; otherwise, what is the freezer for? Many people have such a strong habit that even while driving, they are constantly eating carrots, apples, bread, or chocolate. This is a psychological search for that love of the mother and love of the parents. This eating problem is mostly found in those children who were not breastfed. So Ācārya Rāmjī said: "That is the sweet which makes you immortal when you eat it." That sweet which makes you immortal. And that which is sour destroys your interest in desires, or our desires. For example, a lemon—how it spoils the milk when you curdle it; then there is no more butter inside. Similarly, there is also vairāgya rūpī khaṭāī or jñāna rūpī khaṭāī (sourness in the form of detachment or knowledge). One day we should be able to say to our mind, "Now, enough." And that is our weakness. When our stomach is full, we say, "No, tomorrow at lunchtime we don't need anything, because we have just eaten." But we will ask you at 11:30 or 12 o'clock, "Some fruits or something would be good." So in India we say, "Do not ask a person who has already eaten what should be cooked tomorrow." The person whose stomach is full is a selfish person; he thinks everyone's stomach is full. But we need the person who is able to feel the stomach of others. That is it.
